So in the upper Midwest northern Mi, 0-3 feet everything would be dormant during a big portion of the hunting season. Leaf loss and weeds etc will die leaving very little for cover in early november

Steve - I'm always amazed at how native grasses and forbs stand on the northern plains and how deer survive in those extremely harsh and windy winter conditions. However, deer have been surviving those conditions in that habitat since there were deer. The huge amount of quality forage such habitat provides during the growing season helps deer survive a northern winter.

You missed out the key habitat that we have to deal with. Hard woods with briar thickets. Leave it for browse or remove it for native greens?

How do you determine what trees you terminate with the hack and squirt? I have an 80 acre timber block with 4 small food plots. But the rest is all big open Hardwoods 90 percent of which are White Oaks.

Cole - if the white oaks are marketable and there's a willing buyer I'd sell them verses using the hack and squirt technique. You'll need to find a forester and logger that understands your vision. I tour many properties each year where someone took the best trees and left the rest. This reduces the property value and often the habitat and hunting quality. If your goal for the property is to improve wildlife habitat, hunting opportunities, and the property's future value, then do just the opposite! Harvest or hack and squirt the lowest quality trees (even white oaks) and leave the best! Remove/terminate enough trees to allow enough sun to reach the soil to stimulate quality grass and forbs to grow. Logging will do way more damage to residual trees, creek crossing, road, etc., than hack and squirt. So the income from the logging must be more than the cost to repair the property and account for the decreased value of the residual trees. Before logging I strongly suggest you have an unbiased and qualified professional tour the property! Enjoy creation - grant

Tanner - different species requires different herbicides. Many hardwoods can be controlled by Garlon3A. It's always best to Google the tree species and "control" to find information for your area - grant

Without knowing the property I always suggest studying the neighborhood by driving around, using onX, etc. Then identify the best sources of food, cover, and water during the time of year you wish to hunt. Finally try to have at least one of the resources on your property that's better quality than found in the neighborhood. In SC, quality forage is often the limited resource. - grant
