Insted of weighing seed, I take a measuring cup (fl.oz.) and pour the new bag slowly into the cup a little ar a time. I transfer it to the tote, noting how many total fluid ounces are in the bag. It is now possible to convert the total bag size (acre, 1/4 acre etc.) Into total fluid ounces and use that conversion to scoop into the bag when the plot size has been determined. I also convert my small plot sizes into qubic yards vs acres to eliminate using fractions as much.

What brand of glyphosate are you using? I searched 2% and couldn't find any.
@GrowingDeerTV2 күн бұрын
I use the least expensive generic I can purchase. I didn't communicate well glyphosate is sold at about 43% active ingredient. The 2% means to use that product at 2% If your sprayer holds 100 ounces or 100 gallons, add 98 ounces or gallons of water and 2 ounces or gallons of glyphosate.

That's what I'm talking about! I saw long ago a farmer who did not till or weed the area. Just planted seeds (vegies) and they grew amazingly well and large. The local bug population didn't mind for their food they were use to did not leave. So they left the farmers plants alone. The size of the fruit was surprising too. So I can easily see this video being very true and such a good idea and learning curve for all of us.

Yes sir, so do I broadcast seed before I crimp it down..?
@GrowingDeerTV2 күн бұрын
It is best to broadcast before crimping. it's tough to for the seeds to reach the soil once the crop is crimped.

Have you ever hit fawns while seeding or crimping.
@GrowingDeerTV2 күн бұрын
Ben - We have not, but it likely happens. Farmers have been hitting fawns while haying, combining, etc., for decades and the deer herd is still increasing. Farming will never take much of a toll on deer numbers. Vehicle accidents take a huge toll, but still deer herds are increasing in most areas.
@benjaminstoltzfus1332 күн бұрын
Thanks for your response. The main reason I am asking is because I drilled about 2 acres in pa at the end of may and hit 2 fawns. I was very frustrated. Next year, I am going to try and drill about 2 weeks earlier and see if that helps. I was also wondering if there is anything else I could do to try to prevent this. I was drilling at 2 mph, and they never moved or made a sound. I was also drilling at daylight. I do not think I will drill that early ever again. I think mid day would be better to give them time to move off the plot.

Saw a guy online put the crimped up front and the no till drill on the back - one pass termination and planting is pretty slick

Willie - That can work but takes much more space to turn around and the timing is more critical than when planting first and then crimp when the time is best.

I'm curious how you start a new food plot, say I wanted to plant into an existing hay field. Would you spray the field then no till drill your cereal rye to start the thatch layer? is there a way to establish a plot using no chemicals?
@GrowingDeerTV7 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, new seedlings rarely compete with plants that have an established root system. It seems the options are to till the soil to terminate the existing vegetation. Tillage caused huge damage to the soil. Most herbicides cause way less damage to the soil than tillage. Given this, it's likely best to use a herbicide to terminate the current crop and then plant the new crop.
@tthams738 күн бұрын
Agree with your process! However herbicide doesn’t “stress the ground”.
@GrowingDeerTV7 күн бұрын
Thanks! Herbicides may be necessary in some cases, but those chemicals can certainly damage the soil and life in the soil.

How would you suggest to promote good fall and winter cover and food?
