Perfect timing. I asked a friend for some cuttings from his very mature tree. Thanks 👍🏽

This is a perfect timing video, I was just at a nursery and wondering if the bay laurel was the same as the spice we use. I will now go back and purchase one. Thank you Angela!

I live in Florida. My mother in law planted about 8 laurel bay trees in this yard in 1956. My husband has never left home and I've been living here since 1972 tending the trees that grew huge and providing our big yard with so much shade nothing flowered. The trees were beautiful. Then laurel wilt disease hit the southeast coast and we lost all the trees within two years, despite arbologists trying expensive infusions to keep at least one alive that lasted the longest. We gave up on bays but suddenly one 'dead' piece of trunk that the tree removal guys didn't remove showed signs of a sprout and now, 10 years later we have one of the few bay trees in the area which has grown strong and healthy. Avocados are laurels and when the disease spread South Florida was in a panic fearing the loss of a large part of the commercial supply of avocados, but the wilt seemed to subside before hitting that far south. I think I got that straight. (I lost my huge avocado plants about 30 years ago because of too much shade from the bays, which was fine with us since tree shade was more important)) Thank you for this video. We replanted with live oaks, which are more hurricane proof so my one lbay is happy to be queen.

Perfect timing! I've been meaning to get one of these. That's interesting about drying them first! I was kinda hoping it'd be like an herb where I could just go pick a leaf off whenever I needed it. Is there a reason you dry them?

Thank you so much for this info. I had one a few years ago, (in Scottsdale) and I made the mistake of not putting it in the ground, it lasted for about 5 years. I've been unable to find a reliable source for a new one since. Can you recommend a local place to buy a plant or get a cutting?

I have had a difficult time with Bay, scale insects appear out of nowhere and keeping them alive over winter even under a good grow light is a challenge.

Same problem for me. Northern VA ZONE 7A so I can’t plant them in the ground or leave the pots out dec-feb. scale shows up and I use need oil, but the bush dies anyway. Trying one more time this summer, hopefully third time is a charm.

@@JoshuaQ8 I tried insecticidal soap but it takes several applications so using preditory insects is the best option since I have citrus too.

For the last three years I’ve tried to get a bay laurel to grow taking them in during winter where I use grow lights for 6 hours or so. Every time they do ok until spring and then they die. I’ve been trying to find a robust bush to transplant but can’t find any over a foot tall.

My wife (the gardener in our relationship) got me a bay laurel. I’m a little concerned that it won’t do well in very rainy and wet South Louisiana. It’s still very tiny, but it seems to be doing ok so far. I’m the cook in the house and I got really tired of the broken stale dried bay leaves I got at the store.
