Kenji is a Japanese permaculture pioneer and together with his wife Tomoko he has built a one of a kind homestead over the past 17 years. In this video, Kenji reveals his five secrets to creating paradise on earth.
If you'd like to visit Kenji and Tomoko and stay in their Guesthouse, check out their website here: shanthikuthi.com This is also where you'll find contact details.
If you'd like to support me in making films like this, please join my Patreon community where you'll also find lots of behind the scenes, bonus videos, previews, and tons more! I put up FOUR bonus videos on Kenji's homestead on my Patreon site over the past couple of weeks that you'll unlock upon signing up. The videos you'll find on my Patreon are: (1) an in-depth Japanese natural farming video including key techniques and strategies for planting; (2) a short tour of the outdoor wood fired pizza oven and Japanese oven; (3) a short video where Kenji shares the key principles and ethics of permaculture, and also explains the history of permaculture in Japan; (4) a 10-min bonus video that contains only unseen parts of Kenji and Tomoko's homestead as well as highlights from the interview.

Thank you Kenji for the inspiration. I also wish to simplify my life and live of the land instead of running after materialistic life. Unfortunately when we were young we were encourage by school to have this type of modern life. It was seen as being successful. Now as an adult I see that it was futile. I am now trying to change my life and teach my children to be happy living a simple life.

Early on, I was using a small grass knife like that, then I got a heavier hand sickle that can handle branches and roots up to 1/2-2" _and_ the grass, too - it means fewer tools to clutter the place up, and less time spent running about swapping tools. I have that same goofy grin on my face half the time, laughing for no particular reason - oh, yes, there IS a reason: Everything I need to live I have, and more besides, it is all around me, growing, and I am a part of it. If the people out there knew that life did not have to be so hard, so stressful, so miserable .. they would quit their 9-5 jobs in the city, move to the country to a small piece of land, no improvements, just a few tools, and build a life worth actually living. Some days I may work 14 hours .. some WEEKS I hardly do anything at all, except whatever I want to do .. the irony is, humans are so fit for this kind of work, it doesn't even seem like work .. so I have to laugh again! It isn't just seeds that need to keep moving on .. our trees can get root bound in a nursery setting, develop bad habits .. so, if we cannot sell them within 3 years, we give them away (locally - I don't have money to ship free trees!) or guerilla plant them, spreading the garden beyond this 1/3 acre.

Another wonderful video introduction of inspiring people in Japan - thanks so much! I agree 1000% with what Kenji says about changing the motto in Japan (and worldwide) from MORE MORE MORE to ENOUGH - very Zen - more awareness and appreciating that we have enough and renewing and preserving our current natural assets is vital and yet there's so little awareness of this here in Japan
