They need to give those tomatoes shade this time of year. Thanks for the video John. Some of my family in LV wants to start growing and this will help them out a lot!

You know, a lot of people in Missouri have had trouble with tomatoes. Mine are setting fruit VERY late. At first I thought it was due to the soil, but then I remembered the heat wave we had in April right after I put them in the ground. It peaked close to the 90's for about a week here. I wonder if that stressed the plants too much right after I transplanted them. One plant that I transplanted in May is doing VERY well.

I’m in vegas. Watched this vid to see how things grow here. I want to plant but now I’m even more discouraged. Why do the plants all look so dry and shabby? Is it just the heat or is it the lack of water these plants might be getting?

Its all about watering & tomatoes dont like hot sun all day they produce better with some shade or filtered light in the heat of the day.

@IllumTheMessage One of the other problems tomatoes can face here is an infestation of thrips which seems to be really common. They will make the tomatoes look dried out and dead like that. I started getting hit by thrips last month but used a bit of organocide and neem and they went away.

@IllumTheMessage Actually shading tomatoes in vegas is completely unnecessary. They grow great without it! The trick is planting them early. Once in a while if an actual tomato is exposed to the sun, you can put a tiny piece of shade cloth over it to prevent scald, but i've never needed to do that. The foliage provides all the protection they need. I've never shaded any of my tomatoes and i've already harvested literally hundreds of pounds of tomatoes out of four 4x8 raised beds this season. :)
