Our community garden planted marigolds among the kale/ broccoli plants, we also planted parsley and basil at the end of each 25 foot row where we planted carrots, onions, beets and so on. Apart from grasshopper eating holes in some of the leaves, we had no cabbage moth larvae giving us trouble. Our only troublesome pest was a groundhog who had a taste for beets and sweet potatoes! We also scattered calendula and borage through out the garden, the borage is always full of pollinators.

Catmint (also called Catnip and Nepeta) is my top plant pick for volume of bees and butterflies in my garden, Borage would be a close second. I have both, but I find that the Borage gets thick stems that start to lean over and crack and the lower leaves die and dry up while still on the plant making it look really terrible by mid summer. I end up having to remove most of it because it is so unsightly, there will be Borage volunteers ready to take the place. My Catmint on the other hand, wow! Gorgeous! Covered in blooms from summer with no signs of slowing until frost and looks lovely absolutely covered in little mauve flowers! The hum from all of the bees when I walk by is astounding!

This year, I planted marigolds and calendula in my garden and they have done well. Borage self-seeds and I leave it where I can because the bees love it. Three self-seeded cosmos grew in late summer and looked lovely as well as attracted lots of bees. I also have nasturtiums growing around our fruit trees but they can get out of control. I also grow comfrey for home made mulches and fertilizers around the edge of my veg garden but like to leave a few to flower for the bees. I am planning a flower border for next year with spring bulbs and summer flowers so thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely add heleniums and single dahlias into the border. (I only moved in last year- the house & garden needed alot of work) My neighbours are lovely to, - thankfully - and at least two are growing fruit and veg to. I think at least two more will, as well. One of my coworkers said about companion planting! I'm so glad I chatted about my little garden. My garden isn't big, only 30ft by 12.5 ft, I'll do my best. I'm so grateful, and thankful to all the gardeners out there who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise, and even some pitfalls on youtube, for the novices like me to learn from. I've made one mistake, I had planted some winter potatoes where I had grown Sunflowers, absolutely a no show, then I saw the companion chart! I learn something new every day. A mistake I'll NOT repeat. I'm also learning rapidly about organic gardening and about seed saving, a friend works in a garden centre, and another is a self employed gardener both have spoke independently of seed shortages for next year.

I like those little sachets of bee flower mix! I'm finally so far done with tackling the debris in my garden from the previous renter and making garden beds, that i can now think about beautifying the place, making insect habitat, and covercropping on a larger scale. If you're on a budget like me, there is always room for a few sachets of flower mix for bees, birds and butterflies. They roughly contain 5 square meters of flower meadow each. There are so many species in those. here will always be a few coming up that are just right for the soil or light conditions you spread them on. Leaving in some brassicas that have gone to seed is also a real bee pleaser! Phacelia tanacetifolia is both very good for bees and very good for the soil. You will definitely find that one mixed into blue bee mixes. Buckwheat is another favorite of mine. Leaving in native 'weeds' you like is also an option. If i like it, it stays. Whats not to like about a pretty blue vetch climbing into a shrub or a sprinkle of wartwort.

The Marigolds seems to help reduce pests here. Had problems with the Nasturtium as they get rangy real quickly, and had to be pulled - I may try a more dwarf variety. Think I've mentioned we've been using the Crimson Clover for a cover crop (as seen in our "Winterizing" video) and this year added the corn flowers -- they have both come up marvelously. Kept the bed beautiful all throughout the Winter and was easy to chop down and turn into the soil, as long as you get to that before seeds fully form. Ongoing thanks for the videos.

@GrowVeg6 жыл бұрын
Calendulas have a habit of self-seeding and therefore spreading. However, they are incredibly easy to control by just pulling or hoeing out those seedlings that aren't desired. I'd say they wouldn't be able to out-compete watermelons, which are far chunkier and more vigorous once they get going.

its so funny you pulled up feverfew. I was actually reading about it on my phone while watching your video when you pulled it up.

Did you make that app and is it available for others to use? That would be such a huge help. I absolutely love your videos! So helpful, most videos I come across make my head hurt. Sad but...thank you so much.

The software demonstrated is online-based and accessed through your web browser. But you can also make a one-off purchase of our app. For full details of both, and the differences, visit: www.growveg.com/gardenplanner/gardenplanner.html

And of course you can pull some of the leaves to add as a salad green. Bit like rocket but more bitter 😊

How do you add beneficial flowers when your garden is comprised of an elevated raised veg box and containers? I have no unused in ground space.

I would tuck in companion flowers in among your vegetables - just the odd one here and there will make a big difference. I love using French marigolds/tagetes, sweet alyssum and poached egg plant. More here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4iwaI13oMqYZ9U
