Dogs play growl with humans? They do it with dogs but here Idk about that. I think its easier to see he doesnt like this stimulus and is showing a lot of restraint out of respect for the owner. OBVIOUSLY the dog isn't showing teeth in the way you have accurately described, i'm not stupid. lmao. Its an agape mouth, maybe a reactionary ancillary reaction to being irritated by a stimulus and trying to regulate the discomfort from being in the position as it tries to wriggle out of it. I observed that the dog was exercising restraint but clearly not liking the predicament it was in but was being very passive and having some tolerance out of it out of love and respect for the owner. I won't say how about i teach you something about dogs, but i'll just say it blankly, animals are individuals, just like us, and the intelligence varies from individual to individual perhaps to some degree and sometimes breed by breed. I say that to say, dogs that get to be more intelligent no matter their breed, can be intelligent enough to show restraint and not push their protest to unsavory behavior but do it to a point where it voices their displeasure but doesn't set their owner off. Nobody is above criticism and since you had to get your fingers moving, now you had to get checked. Thats my opinion, and it seems to clearly be whats going on here, because when you internalize other clues, you see the dog try to wriggle out of a position they do not wanna be in. A smart person would deduce, "oh, the dog doesn't seem to like this position, its trying to get out, maybe it doesn't like this position" especially how this dog was positioned, and on a couch of all things. Further evidenced by the dogs growl, whether its a play growl or not, the dog isn't just playing around, its displeased and not necessarily happy, its showing restraint. Dogs whether they are lazy or not like to move and feel free and unrestrained no matter their position. Its why they aren't necessarily fond of hugs. I'll give you holding them though, dogs don't seem to mind that. So there you have it "little buddy".

I dont think the dog likes it, he not playing around, the dog is showing a lot of passive aggressive restraint. The side eye is cuz he may be weirded out by the behavior or annoyed. Notice he does it after the owner gets finished being all in his face. Dogs get uncomfortable with that sometimes, and he looks back at the owner as he backs off to anticipate when hes gonna provide the annoying stimulus again. We think its cute when they growl sometimes but its only playful toward humans and dogs in certain situations. I dont think this is one of them... lol

I do know what you are trying to say and Yes it can be a sign of dominance to dogs but only if you show your dominance in a threating way. When you have a dog you learn how to read their behavioural cues. It's one thing for dogs to act grumpy and another for them to growl at you in a full blown warning mode. I know how that goes. I can't show you how I give him kisses and how he makes his faces but I only push his boundaries as much as I know that we are playing and he won't retaliate in a negative way. I would never hurt him like that or ever put myself in that position.

My little brother used to do something like that. I would put a knuckle against his outer ear and rub it up and down quickly and he'd lean into it growling. When I stopped he'd lower the growl, raise the pitch, and mush his head into my hand for more. It was ridiculously cute lol

@WhiteLiteBarbii It can mean both. I have a German Shepherd so it’s easy to tell when his ears change position. His ears go back both when he’s really excited and when he gets spooked by loud noises. I can’t apply that exactly to this situation because he loves hugs and doesn’t mind when I kiss his face, but the ears going back can mean a lot of things depending on context.

@mighty axolotl Yeah, some dude was chuckling at his little terrier lunging and snapping at my dog with his teeth bared.... said the dog “just wants to say hi”, because his tail was wagging. _Idiot_ . Some people just cannot read dogs’ body language, they only know the simplest of gestures. If I was playing with a dog I didn’t know, I would definitely take growling as a “back off”. I still don’t completely trust my Nana’s Chihuahua, as unpredictable as he is. She’s had that dog for 10 years, and I’ve known him since he was a puppy.
