I love this scene because it has a deeper meaning. Although Max and John butted heads and had a long standing rivalry, deep down they cared for each other and would do anything for each other when the chips were down.

Fantastic film! A childhood film for me

For me as well! my sister and I were both pretty young when we found this movie at our grandparents house. We laughed all day watching and reciting the movie to each other. It was a good day, I will never forget Walter Matthau or Jack Lemmon for that or this movie.

@@patrickkanas3874I wasn't into this movie when I was a kid. My older brothers watched this a lot and I had a hard time getting into it. Now that I'm grown up its funny as hell! I recently told one of my older brothers why I had a hard time getting into it when I was younger. He responded and said it is hard to get into it as a young kid!

The guys reaction when Matheau says that makes me wonder if he improvised that line.

Could very well have been. There are many instances of actors doing that and the producers leave it in there because it fits better than the original script
