Grundéns Presents: The Mate

From the first time Joey Rivenbark saw a boat backing down into its slip as a kid in Morehead City, NC, he knew what we wanted to do: go fishing. From dragging fuel hoses, to shoveling ice, and scrubbing boats, Joey worked every job around the dock before earning his rightful spot as a mate aboard the 54’ Jarrett Bay, Starflite.
Now that Joey has achieved his dream of working on a world-class boat and weighing a fish in the Big Rock fishing tournament, Joey refuses to takes anything that he does for granted. No matter how successful a day on the water is, the boat still needs to be washed, fish need to be cleaned, tackle maintained, and hooks sharpened.

Couldn't imagine myself in a career other than fishing since I became an avid offshore fisherman at 10 yrs old. Worked in seafood since I was 13 to get to know people. I'm a commercial crabber now and I have a job offer in NC in the works to run a boat offshore for a new boat owner that I'm praying this storm doesn't screw up. "It'd be hard to start over doing something different" really resonates with me... Labor of passion, that's for sure.

i am 15 and run charters inshore. i want to become a mate on a sports fisher and eventually captain one. does any one have any suggestions to do that.

you gotta have your uscg license to charter and have to be 18 to get the license so how do you run charters? lol

Got stiffed today on a charter, they have no clue that we get there 2+ hours before the “captain “ loaf ice, catch bait n fuel the bait. not saying the cap they are the star but when u spend a 12 hour day to help a friend for r the love of it for some dumb $&@# charter that had an awesome day cobia fishing and had 3 nice fish to bring to the dock and only 1 other boat got ONE fish that dat ....... and didn’t get a thank you knowing you work for tips when they ask you how the payment system works
