Getting the cabinet done took a lot more work than I expected, but now it's done. All the individual elements were properly cleaned, and everything put back together.
Time for a reception test.

It is an old Radio. And no one knows, which messages were told to us through it in the many many years. So it is no problem, if one can see the age. You have made a very good work.

I sometimes imagine a family sitting around this radio hearing news of the outside world. I was born in 1963, so that era was over as we had radios all over the place, but in the 50s, these things were as important as a family car. They fascinate me.

Considering how you did it, the veneer repair worked out a treat. Now it doesn't have a massive chunk missing out of it and it's not embarassingly scruffy, in fact it looks very tidy. Ok, maybe it's not how you'd normally do it but given the circumstances I think you did an excellent job. I listened to the reception test with my Sennheiser headphones. Now I know I won't hear the exact sound produced by the radio via your microphone and mangled by KZbin's audio compression etc. but I can get a relative idea of it and it seems well up to expected standard. The treble seems exceptionally good, we can consider the elecrostatic tweeters to be healthy. As a Bluetooth speaker the sound quality must be equal to or better than the majority of equivalent modern items with the addition of one important but oft-forgotten characteristic: Pride of ownership. Someone owning an item such as this radio doesn't merely require a disposeable appliance that does a job. They want style and quality, the sort of quality that would likely cost four figures if such equipment was made today. I'm finding myself wanting something similar to this radio more and more. However, I still think any electronic restoration would have to be carried out by someone more experienced than I. I know a bit about valve equipment although my comfort zone is in solid-state and as the saying goes, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"...

I agree with you as regards the pride of ownership, sorely lacking these days. As regards your journey, all I can suggest is get started on a really cheap set, so it won’t hurt if something burns up. I assure you the next time will be better 😊

This radio sounds wonderful. The cabinet is beautiful. I, like you, come from the era of hybrid tube-solid state equipment. When I was studying Radio and Television repair in high school, I learned both “technologies”. I love the old radio warmth and glow. I also believe that if everything should indicate it’s era. Beautiful restoration.

I wish I could get my hands on a comparable radio at a reasonable price but I can see why the values are pretty high, especially for one that's been restored. Maybe I'll get lucky some day. Great series. I watch them although I can't claim to understand a lot of the technicalities. I'm just glad there are people who want to keep these old radios up and running. God only knows how many have ended up in landfills.

It's absolutely stunning what you did here! The radio was crap when you showed it in the first episode -- I woldn't have given it a second thought. But now it is a marvel. All that corrosion is gone, you repaired a clutch and what else. Maybe, just maybe, a little polishing. But like some other comments say, this radio is old. It is not supposed to look brand new!

@@electronicsoldandnew I just installed #40 bulbs, and they seem to be working fine. They're spec'd at 6.3V 0.15A, which is a higher current draw than the original 7V 0.1A but not excessively so. FWIW.

Great job (as usual)! Can you elaborate a bit on your "usual bath of shaving foam"? I'm restoring a 5195 (which has exactly the same grill cloth) but I can't manage to get it clean. I tried a bit of shaving foam on a corner but it only seems to make the fabric dull and fluffy.
@electronicsoldandnew

I wet the cloth with shower, then spread the shaving foam on it liberally. Leave for about 10 minutes and Rinse off with shower. It works pretty well most of the time.

Looks and sounds great to me! Can you hear how well the electrostatic tweeters are working? Are they any better at conveying "spacial awareness" to the sound than, say, normal dynamic 4-ohm side-mounted speakers? I have a Grundig Type 2030W/3D awaiting a refit that has the latter speakers. It was supposed to have a "3D" sound filling quality that single-speakered radios didn't have. I'm curious to know whether Grundig radios with side-mounted electrostatic tweeters were better in that regard.
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 4 жыл бұрын
I can hear the high end quite significantly from the electrostatic speakers on the sides. However, I’ve heard SABAs and telefunkens that used normal smaller speakers on the sides and the effect was the same. I’m not sure the electrostatics are that much better, if at all. They do add a “volume” aspect to the sound, making it “bigger” but I believe the wooden cabinet itself is mostly responsible for that.
