For years, people spread the rumor that Buddy Holly played at the Community Hall in the thriving metropolis of Vallican, British Columbia. (Population at the time would've been like....3) I once got into an argument with a Supervisor I worked with as he was always trying to prove how smart he was. He claimed Buddy played the Vallican hall in 1961 or 1962. I burst out laughing. I asked him many, many times if he wanted to recant that statement which only made him angrier. Should've seen his face when I told him that Buddy HOLLY died February of '59. What everybody confuses him for was we had a local musician who used the stage name of BUDDY MARR, who had curly hair and dark glasses (because he was blind) and they toured around our little armpit of the world through most of the 1960's. Buddy Marr was actually Nick Keraieff.

@@That_AMC_Guy well, I have travelled all of BC, born in BC (Okanagan), raised in BC (W. Kootenay) but have to admit I have never heard of Vallican. Somewhere bigger might be of help although I will check out Google maps etc. Always nice to meet up with another true westcoaster. Always had to chuckle when someone from Winnipeg said that they lived out west. Well, blow me down. Go one direction after New Denver and hit the Arrow Lake and there is I would be or later go the other direction and stop at the Pulp Mill and don't run me over. Long time ago though. Delivered the Nelson Daily News for 7 years as a kid. Just had not heard of Vallican but have driven the Slocan Lake highway many times as well as many crossings of the Monashee toward the Okanagan.

For a VFR rated pilot, when in doubt don't. My Dad was a pilot, he only flew light planes, but emphasized if you see the weather isn't what it needs to be, stay on the ground, or you can get yourself killed. He only had a VFR rating. IFR, or I think it's called IMC, is a different story, and a experienced pilot with an IFR rating could've probably successfully flown that route. Who knows, perhaps the pilot got a little cocky, wanted to pick up some extra cash, and fly some celebrities around gave him the incentive to take this unnecessary risk.

@@kfemme68 Brian Wilson was great but he was nowhere near what Lennon and McCartney were. He had too many issues in his life. Drug addiction, paranoia and an abusive father. Pet sounds was inspired by Rubber Soul. So Brian Wilson was influenced by the Beatles. And then Sergeant Pepper was inspired by pet sounds. So they were trying to outdo one another for a while there. But in the end the Beatles won. I will say this about the Beach boys. They were the only thing that was keeping rock ‘n’ roll alive at all from 1961 to 1963. And I do mean the only thing. But when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan and started the British invasion that’s when rock ‘n’ roll really took off again. And this time it did not die in a plane crash.

Without doubt, Buddy was very special. As a Liverpool kid of about 9-10 years old, whilst staying with an aunty in Heswall, on the Wirral, in a flat above a coffee shop, I remember his music belting out at night from down below. It's potency and impact has never left me, it was magical. I love his music and songwriting ability. I recently read a biography on his life - a real eye-opener. Such talent. I came away thinking what a generous, kind person he was, but, like Elvis, was taken advantage of by others. So generous, always willing to help others in the same game to get the recognition they deserve, not grabbing all the limelight for himself. Like another much-missed pop legend of mine, fellow-Scouser Billy Fury, someone who has a special place in my heart. Thank you, Buddy. @@andyrob3259 Maria has said that if she would have gone on that tour with him then he wouldn't have gotten on that plane. She blames herself for his death. Like Curwin Sphere said people handle death and grieve differently. Some people can't handle funerals. I didn't go to my great aunt's funeral because I wanted to remember her like she was before she died. I went to her viewing though. Even though I didn't go to her funeral, it doesn't mean I didn't love her less.

Rave on Buddy. I remember being young when I watched La Bamba and just crying so hard at the ending

Death does create an aura of magic, however, which seems to preserve the greats in something eternally beautiful

As a person from the Midwest, i know how awful those winters can be, and i can’t even imagine how painful dying in those conditions would be, let alone dying in a plane crash

This "report" mentions Buddy's injuries, but of course all of these kids, pilot included, had to have been literally smashed to smithereens. The crash was not a "minor" thing. RIP all involved, and love to Buddy's widow. 💔

Buddy Holly...The Big Bopper...Ritchie Valens...all were thrown from the plane..their bodies were on the ground (Big Bopper was on the other side of the fence)...the pilot was crushed within the plane wreckage...I have also read the Waylan Jennings regretted(to say the least) about what he said in retort to (I think to Buddy Holly) about crashing...I read it as Buddy said to Waylan "I hope the bus freezes..(cuz it constantly broken down in winter weather) ..Waylan retorted back saying "I hope the plane crashes" ...

My father's idol was Buddy, so naturally he's mine too! He looked exactly like him. If you ever wonder what Buddy would look like when he got old, just look at my dad.

I was 3 years old and remember coming inside to get a drink of water. My two older brothers and my sister were huddled around the radio in the kitchen, crying as they heard the news. I was bewildered because they were so upset. My mom shooed me back outside while she patiently dealt with 3 sobbing pre-teens.

Strange to think he was only a little older than John Lennon yet we think of him coming from another musical era. He was also one of Lennons musical hero’s
