I thought when I saw Walt Disney in the thumbnail that you were going to talk about the way he treated his workers. @clurkroberts26502 жыл бұрын
Disney had major faults, but the American Experience failed to provide a true perspective. Dozens of books provide fascinating background stories of the strikes and rivalries that shaped Disney. He was no angel, but he was also a hard driving businessman, who took enormous financial risks for the sake of entertainment. He rewarded his artists handsomely, more than any other studio but the studio did have a large disparity in salaries, which led to the strike. During the strike, Disney mostly left the country, he did not want to deal with the workers and left the negotiations to lawyers, which was a huge mistake. I recommend reading about the strike, Art Babbitt who led it (possibly the greatest animator in history) and how the unions literally threaten to destroy Disney, and then would reshape the Disney studio and Disney himself. The shaping of our country during this time was as turbulent as it is today, the socioeconomic environment was evolving from the depression, wars and all sectors of business were newly reforming. After the strike, Disney changed from being a hands on artistic leader, to more of a studio business head. Art Babbitt, who tauntingly became Disney rival was ousted from the company, which was a sad loss for both since his talent was truly exceptional . The communist scare and era in the 50s exposed the scars left from the strike on Disney’s psyche, and his testimony to the McCarthy led communist witch-hunts , along with other Hollywood studio heads remains a black mark to his legacy and our nations.

Columbus and his men ignored the King and Queen’s order that he “abstain from doing … (the inhabitants) any injury.” He forced countless natives, any over the age of 14, to provide him with either gold or cotton or they would be killed and punished on the spot. He would order men to be burned at the stake and would order children to be hacked into pieces. Any native who complied but failed to meet the quota of what was demanded of them had their hands cut off and placed as a necklace around their necks. He was a tyrant for the many of the spanish settlers he ruled over. In my view, the commentary regarding Walt Disney was more than disappointing. As a child I met Mr. Disney by happenstance back in the 1960s, at Disneyland, two days after the first fatal incident at the park. This is where a man fell to his death from the Matterhorn bobsled ride, after he unfastened his seatbelt and stood up. He fell to his death. I will never forget walking by the Matterhorn with my father one early weekend morning, as there were very few guests in the park. Walt Disney stood alone, wearing coat and tie, where the poor man met his end, and he was in terrible distress. My dad, a doctor, consoled Mr. Disney on nearby bench for at least an hour, as he was overwhelmed with grief and dismay over the incident. I sat next to Walt, and it was immediately apparent that he was a truly decent man who loved people. After a while, we returned home to LA, not far from Mr. Disney’s house. They kept in contact over the phone for some time. Walt died not long after. In summary, Walt Disney, despite his flaws, was a product of his time, and his attitudes were prevalent in the overall culture to a large extent back then. The same was true of John Wayne. People today, cannot relate well to those times because they didn’t experience it like we did back then. The final lesson was they despite our station and accomplishments in life we are all highly imperfect people. Accept that and move on. These times, institutions and people are even more imperfect. It is easy to point to a man’s faults after they have passed on, and in this connection some illustrations are truly unfair.
