Around the 9:00 mark where they discuss presidents being able to opt out of lifetime secret service protection... that's an option that shouldn't be available. Reason being is that when a person becomes the president, they understand that everyone knows they're privy to countless confidential national security briefings. After they leave office, and opting out of lifetime secret service protection, they'd be an incredibly easy target for someone vying for that information, and if they're threatened with violence or even death if they don't provide the confidential information to those who've taken them, they'd likely release it which could immensely weaken the nation's security.

I used to work with a surgeon that belonged to Army/Navy golf course in Arlington. It just so happened that Obama was a member there, too. He’d golfed in a tee time either directly before or after Obama on a number of occasions. He said it was pretty unnerving having a Secret Service agent staring him down while he was trying to putt or hit a hard shot, but once on Father’s Day the surgeon was golfing immediately after Obama. The surgeon said that he said “Goodmorning Mr President.” to Obama and they struck up a fairly casual conversation. At the end Obama told my friends daughter to let him win that day because it was Father’s Day. Probably good advice because the surgeons daughter is now on a golf scholarship at a D1 school. I’ve also been in a restaurant in Florida when Jimmy Carter showed up. He about 4 Secret Service guys with him as far as I could tell. Wasn’t much of a concern. I was also in a formation during a military parade when we were casing the colors of the Berlin Brigade when I was in the Army. Much bigger deal. We had Clinton there whom was the sitting POTUS at the time, Helmut Kohl whom was the PM of Germany at the time, and Eberhardt Diepkin whom was the Mayor of Berlin at the time. Much higher security. We had to go through metal detectors about 4 hours before the ceremony began, and there were snipers on the roofs of many of the buildings in the area.

Sad story Nancy Reagan told about Ronald Reagan in an interview with Larry King. In retirement Reagan would go for a walk near their home with a Secret Service guard to accompany him. Sometimes the the secret service guy would have to stop Reagan picking flowers from neighbors' houses. He would be picking flowers to take back to Nancy.

For me the most incredible conclusion about these rules is that they are there to "protect the nation" rather than the former presidents themselves. The huge amount of prestige that comes along with the job is a perk too. Not to mention the fact that becoming president was probably their life goal, so it would seem silly to no longer want that just because of the rules in place when you leave, especially because the rules imposed on you while still in office are probably way more restricting.

I think that instead of letting former presidents opt out of getting secret service protection and hire their own private security, the government should offer more than one option for secret service detail. They can give the option of getting full protection, and then they can also give the option of getting partial/limited protection, where they let them do more things, and the president in question can choose what those things are. For example, I'd be fine with not driving a car ever again, but I'd hate never having any alone time, and I'm fine with agents snooping through all of my personal and private stuff, as long as they don't have any thoughts or questions about it, and are reading it for the sole purpose of securing my safety. Now, the can also still choose to not get any detail at all, but if you're like me, you'd probably opt to get the partial protection.

Yeah, and it seems the protection is an all-or-nothing package; the protected don't get to select individual methods or processes. "No" means no protection of any kind for the decliner.

@Gregg so what he was impeached, it practically means jack shit unless he gets charged which he wont happen because hes not guilty
@cold54173 жыл бұрын
@Gregg well since the democrats hold the house having a impeachment would be difficult and the main reason he was voted was because he made a bunch of empty promises and is black, who cares trump got impeached it means absolutely nothing if he didnt leave office or get charged with any crime.

My friends mom worked at a Walmart in Americus Ga where Jimmy Carter would come into years ago occasionally to by many bags of dog food. He would load the cart and one day she asked him why he didn't have the secret service guys do it and he told her because they MUST have their hands free at all times and have to watch his every move and his surroundings.

That's kinda funny... I'm sure one of the guys could help for like 10 seconds, especially in Americus. Not exactly busy
