What you read as "57M" looks like an upside down "WLS" to me... maybe the owner tuned the antenna for the best reception of WLS at that setting.

Nice find. Grunow is a decent radio and pleasant to look at.

Grunow was the same Grunow that was part of Grigsby-Grunow, the company that owned Majestic. The story I heard is that Mr. Grunow had a falling out with his partner and left the company around 1933 or so, in 1934-35 he started his own under the General Household Utilities name with the Grunow name as the brand. They were most famous for the "Teledial" sets that they introduced in 1936, and they did quite well with those, by 1938 the company was on the rocks and by 1939 it was gone.

What a great find,love the deco shape,I used to collect that stuff,philcos,zeniths ,atwater kent,rya,but lost interest when I found german radios,but thats a nice find for sure 30s radios are nice quality.

Very nice. I can't believe the gear you get up that way. Did you get that off Craig's list as well? We have crap on Craig's list down here in Dallas. Nice looking radio. Can't wait to hear her running.

My RCA C14 uses a 5Z3 as well as RCA 242 and 262 radios. Kind of exciting that this is your first official eye tube radio and radio with a 5Z3 rectifier.

They told me it was a 1936 so yours could be a 36

@bandersentv I don't know how accurate that info is but the story behind the company is similar to that. Grigsby-Grunow went bankrupt a few years after Mr. Grunow left, Mr. Grigsby was more of the sales and marketing type, Mr. Grunow was more of an engineer I believe. The reason I have an interest is that G.G had a tie in with a Canadian Company called "Rogers", they jointly developed products for a few years. In fact "Rogers" manufactured "Majestic" brand sets for the Canadian market.

My late-40s Philco car radio has a pair of 7C5s in it, which are basically 6V6s with a Loktal base. I believe it came out of a Packard Deluxe Eight. I think you should be able to fit a 6U5 tube in there in place of the 6G5. It's the same tube with a tubular envelope.

5Z3 is 4 pin base predecessor to the 5U4.

Thats funny you have that on here I was just looking at my brothers 1935 Grunow model 641 yesterday he wants me to replace the caps in it. It works , I just picked up three big Rider troubleshooting books for $5.00 and was hoping it was in there but it was'nt they skiped all around it and he has a 1937 truetone D700 it was'nt in there ether.

a have a couple grunows, i'll check the models. 57M , my guess is that scrawl is WLS upside down, chicago radio station... and that one of the antenna or alignment trimmers

@bandersentv mine is very pretty but the veneer is coming off the bottom like on yours.mine is known as "the shirley temple" as she was the spokesman.there is a video here of a 1291.looks like yours except it has a teledial and a different grill.

Lockemeister has the Grigsby Grunow Model 50. 'Radiofixit' has a Grunow video. The teledial 1291 is a very cool model. Yeah it sure does look al ot like the Majestics.. and the Zeniths with the airplane dial.

@bandersentv WLS is on 890kc. Start looking around 800-900kc (kHz). They have a site. type their callsign.. add AM and dot com in your browser. If the research I did isright, It's in C-QUAM AM Stereo @ 50kW. Every great once in a while I can hear it out here in WA.
