Your reviews are extremely valuable. Do you have any experience with the Outdoor Research Firebrand Mitts for extreme cold? We love the classic Air Force N-4B 's as much as you do, but the Firebrands could be a modern solution with a smaller weight and form factor when packed.

I would recommend to go a size up. For damp, Southeastern 20-30s, some of the best gloves I've found are SealSkinz. Waterproof, breathable and very flexible, they have been the warmest gloves I've found for minimal bulk.

Is that Donkey Kong Country? Countless hours spent on that game lol. I always liked the snow levels. I have some Helikon Tex cold weather gear that works great. Regular and Grid Fleece Balaclavas, Fleece Watch Cap in Camogrom/Multicam, Helikon's Gen3 ECWCS level 1 and 2 base layers, and for level 3 I have Helikon's Patriot Fleece Hoody in Multicam. I have Darn Tough ECW wool socks, and I have cheapo thinsulate cold weather gloves. For Winter Boots I currently have a pair of Zamberlan boots from Italy. Vibram soles, Goretex lined, very expensive boots, $250-300, but I got them for free from my brother in law.

I take the old school wool inserts and combine them with the flyers gloves. I've used them in 20 degree weather with sleet while patrolling. They worked great with awesome dexterity.

For me, even today, I still like the leather shells, with wool liners. Yeah, when you get into the snow, those shells start turning into sponges. I guess you can oil them up to help prevent that, but I usually just pulled off the shells and stuck with the liners. Put the issue wool shooters mittens over them kept my hands warm down to 10 below. I will add a caveat...I usually would put on the polypro glove liners or the aviator gloves on as a base layer and the cold weather shells to keep the wind out. The aviator gloves, I kept on for setting charges on my mortar rounds, but they don't last very long with any real work. I do like the old school aviator cold weather gloves. The regular issue cold weather gloves, just never seemed to do the trick. The aviators are a good one layer keep your hands warm deal, but never really trusted them for any real work, due to my experience with the regular nomex gloves. I bet that fur cap got you a lot of flak from the regulation nazi's. Even in the field.

Just scored a pair of those flyers gloves over Halloween. Good friends of mine was in the airforce, now flys commercial let me use a pair while we walked our kids around the neighborhood trick or treating. I brought two other pair of gloves of my own and they didn't do very well. Im currently doing chemo treatment so one side-effect I have is really bad neuropathy and severe sensitivity & pain in my hands, feet and jaw. He let me use his gloves and they were awesome! I told him how warm they kept my hands, therefore allowing me to hit the entire neighborhood with my daughter and not call it early. So he said I could have. So thankful! Best set of gloves I have EVER owned, including high end snowboarding gloves.

I never found the flyers gloves to be particularly durable on my deployments. I preferred the 5.11 flame retardant gloves from 2008...I don't think they make them anymore. Thankfully I bought multiple pairs back in the day and still have a couple of unused pairs. I prefer the old OD green balaclava. The newer black ones were never warm enough for me. You can still get the OD ones on the surplus market

@@tjellis1479 good products I just passed mine to my son. Mine was ultralight rated to 20deg is was very comfortable. My biggest problem was my ground pad it wasn't rated for cold. Ground was cold top was warm. Hope this helps take a poncho liner with you. Works great with that. :) Btw they make an overbag that will drop the system to -40f.

Yeah in Canada we have gloves/mittens but to actually get work done I don’t wear anything lol but the nomex look interesting thin enough to get stuff done and durable

2 years old I realize, I obviously have not caught up on all your videos. Wow. What a difference a few decades make, NONE of this shit existed in the mid 80’s. Thin leather gloves with thin wool inserts, stupid helmet liner, cotton-based long underwear. I’m glad the Army finally invested in modern gear.

A GREAT military surplus hat is the B9B Cold Weather Hat. You can pull the flaps all the way down for maximum warmth, 3/4 down (snap the flap to the rear), or leave the flaps up (snap on top of head. Super warm and wears forever. The only problem with this hat is they have a habit of disappearing, especially if you have kids.

Did you ever get issued the black leather gloves with the OD wool inserts? They were ok as a general work glove but those things sucked if they ever got wet. Of course those were the only gloves our CSM wanted to see when we were in the field. Most guys bought civilian ski gloves, and if we knew CSM was coming around we threw on the leather ones until he left. You gotta love the Army.

Being it's cold and snow here from the end of September into April I approve this message. Those are all excellent items especially depending on how cold it is outside. I've really been liking a shemagh to protect my skin from frostbite, keep me from breathing -(cold as balls)°C air, concealment, antiviral barrier, etc. I've been getting ready for work while this was on. If you did go over a shemagh my apologies. That's the only thing I'd add.

Any future plans to have a head to head GP battle such as GI issue vs German, Brit, Canadian, Chinese, Russian, etc? In my opinion GI issue gear is battle tested, the price point is usually considerably lower and there is more availability. All considerations when making a purchase.

Howdy, I am wondering if you could go over the use of the Tritium Lensatic Cammenga compass as per your training. Then compare it to the relatively new Cammenga Protractor compass D3T with its own protractor. I understand the Lensatic compass can help you with azimuth. How does this work when you are making your way from one place to a safe destination? The D3T can be used on the map but how do you take what the Tritium compass reads and relate this to what your map is telling you? Oh one last thing, is there a way to get ahold of the Army TO manual for learning to use a map and compass? Even if its a few years old the compass still works the same. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Will you be stateside or in Germany? Either way you I know you will have a great meal in the mess hall. It's one of the things I miss about being active duty, we had great food for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Thanks! All I can tell you is you need to know the difference between grid and magnetic north. Other than that, any good compass should keep you on track. @@GruntProof THANK YOU SO MUCH, The TO is now downloaded and in my folder for reading. I am most likely going to buy both compasses since I see a use for both. The reason I asked if there was a different purpose for them is because one lays on the map while the other is used to sight. But if there is little difference, then learning both should go smoothly and I can then place one in each of the two bags I have made. I have 2 protractor kits for that reason. Now one of the kits can be a back up since one of the compasses will have a protractor built in. Or do you think it would be better to get 2 Lensatic Tritium compasses? Just curious?
