I bought the camo version. I can vouch for the tarp's toughness. For the heck of it, I decided to put 4 grommets in each corner. (You really don't need them.) The force required to pound through the tarp to make the holes with a grommet kit was unbelievable. It was a project I regretted to try, but did manage to finish after about 30 minutes of work. (Usually, it's easy to pound grommet holes with most tarps. Not with this one. There are 3 layers to this tarp.)

I bought one of the el cheapo grabber blankets on Amazon with some of the Amazon cards I got for Christmas so that I can combine it with the military poncho and poncho liner I have, and am planning on getting a wool military blanket to go along with the rest of it. That way I can make any number of different shelter configurations. I can use the poncho for overhead cover, the tarp/grabber blanket for a reflective ground cloth, and then I can combine the poncho liner (with zipper to allow use as a sleeping bag) along with the wool blanket to keep warm or can combine all the above things together to make a ranger roll on steroids. Among many other possibilities. I'll definitely get one of these tarps soon though.

I bought two Arcturus tarps based on another channel’s recommendation just about two weeks before seeing your failed review. I have only used one so far and it was as a reflective layer on top of a cabin tent to block all the mesh in the roof. It worked well doing that, reflecting the heat from my DeWalt version of the Mr. Heater Buddy. Helped keep the 9’x16’ tent ridiculously warm. It wasn’t stressed in any way to test its strength. I will definitely get this Bearhard tarp since it is officially Grunt Proof. Randall, do you have any experience with the official issued military tarps? I have the Marpat and the UCP digital. They’re made by ORC, the same people who made the ICS tent. They’re heavy but they seem ok.

I have had good success with the PATHFINDER Survival Blanket; in fact I have one in each of our vehicles as part of my emergency kit.' Oh, and regarding the "mano cornuto" at the end, "Mano Cornuto means “horned hand” in Italian; the gesture is commonly depicted on charms against the evil eye. It is unclear whether the gesture originated as an image of horns or as a “poking out the eyes” gesture (against the malocchio or “evil eye”), but ancient lunar goddess charms depicting animal horns were used for similar protective purposes and are probably related to the gesture. The use of the horns as a symbol of satanic belief is recent, and is evolved from its use by heavy metal musicians and fans."

I have 2 Aquaquest Defender tarps which are constructed of 70d nylon with a hydro-static column rating of 20,000mm, that's over 60 feet. Now, I have a question for you. The Defender tarps are very heavy for their size given their heavy nylon construction and extremely thick layers of waterproofing. My question is in two parts. First, have you tested the Aquaquest Defender tarp, and secondly, is a hydro static column rating of 20,000mm really necessary given the Bearhard Camping Tarp only has a 3,000mm rating? The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to decide weather or not to pay the premium of the Aquaquest offerings next time I'm looking for a tarp. I guess I have a second question. I understand the advantages and disadvantages of the sil-nylon vs taffeta debate, but between 70D ripstop nylon and 210T polyester taffeta, which would be the toughest? Now, I understand the Defender tarps are not thermal tarps, but if this tarp compares to the Aquaquest offerings in regards to toughness, and if I can do with a significantly lower waterproof rating, I might chose to take one of these on my next winter outing. Honestly, I have some Arcturus tarps and for what they are, they're fine, but I have been looking for a quality reflective tarp that's as tough as my Aquaquest tarps.
@GruntProof2 жыл бұрын
20,000? I doubt that rating 🤣 I've been in extended rain for weeks with around 2000cm and have been fine. In a pitched setting, like for most shelters, I doubt you'd get anywhere close to a build up of 2m anyway. Between the T and D strength I'll have to research that. Thanks!
@thriftysurvivor61172 жыл бұрын
@@GruntProof Thanks for your prompt reply to my questions. I have no way of testing the waterproof rating of the Aquaquest Defender tarp, but if you've ever seen one of these tarps, you'd see that it has an extremely heavy duty TPU coating. The TPU coating is far thicker than any other tarps I've ever seen. It's so thick that unless you hold it up to a light, it's hard to see the camo pattern on the other side. My DD tarps are rated at 3,000mm and they don't have anywhere near that thick of a coating. I also have another tarp with a camo pattern which is rated at 5,000mm and I can easily see the camo pattern through the waterproof coating on it. All that to say that I think you'd be a believer if you ever got your hands on one. I've even seen people make rafts out of them. My question related more as to weather or not that type of a waterproof rating is necessary and I think you answered that question. I will say though that the Aquaquest Defender tarps which are made in Canada would be worth putting through your Grunt Proof testing. It's about as heavy duty of a tarp as you'll find short of a canvas tarp, while being much lighter than canvas. They come in several sizes so if you chose to experiment with one, you can just order the smallest size. I know they aren't cheap, but the are built like a tank at about 1/3 the weight of a canvas tarp. I really value your Grunt Proof tests and for that reason I am planning on ordering one of the Bearhard Camping Tarps. I think it's worth trying out since I'm looking for a quality (reflective) tarp to add to my collection. I think It'd be great for constructing a super shelter... Thanks again, Eric

2 1/2 lb is too heavy, my whole X-Mid 1p tent is lighter than just this tarp & gives fully enclosed storm and bug protection. If I get an emergency tarp to cover impromptu overnights, it has to pack much lighter & smaller than a full hiking tent. So it's a fail from me. Sure, the tent costs more but it's a better shelter & less weight and bulk to carry. I am however looking for a lighter, more compact emergency shelter to take on day walks, just in case. As such it's not likely to see use so only a trivial weight & bulk will be acceptable. It would have to be a fraction of the weight of my tent fly which is 545g.
@thehopperhopes63652 жыл бұрын
Only problem with the X-Mid , is getting your hands on one!
@kenwebster50532 жыл бұрын
@@PTY064 I bought it on Drop some years ago and no, it didn't cost that much. I am not actually comparing the 2, I am comparing emergency shelter options available to me & relative to what I already have. I also have a Hoochie tarp, but that is also heavier than just a tent fly Any chain store tent fly would be lighter than a tarp & provide fully enclosed weather protection. The problem with a tarp is that you can't get full weather protection without overlapping near half it's area which makes it a very large, bulky & heavy option. Why are they promoted as light weight, it makes no sense at all & is a lie. If your stuck on tarps, SOL has an emergency one that is not Mylar, so does not shred despite being super thin and ultra light. Possibly about the lightest affordable fully enclosed option may be the Gatewood cape. The most expensive and lightest option is Dyneema which I am not considering so I am really only looking at up to mid price range options here.
