Nice methodical approach. Never done bench synchronising before and this is great timing as have just got a new (second hand) set of carbs for my ZRX 11 and so will do this when I'm checking the float heights to get a baseline.

I know it more messing around but just make 4 bowl adaptors for clear tube fuel level test saves time in the long run, you can buy these adaptors for some carbie brands. Also I found checking fuel level with these cabbies in a level position does not work in all cases - try and duplicate the angle they actually really sit on if they were installed on the bike, I found this solved a flooding problem no one could give me the answer too. I think Andy's Motorcycle videos are fantastic I'm sure they have helped many people.

When I had Suzuki training, you check the height with the weight of the float just touching the needle. The weight of the float on the needle spring would be balanced... Kinda on a slant..

Yes the needle has a spring loaded pin and it should support the weight of the float without compressing, which these do just fine. If the spring compresses under the weight of the float you need to replace the needle and seat. The problem was the fact that I had not drilled the hole for the float hinge pin square and the float required some manipulation to function properly. Thanks as always mate.

yeah these new floats, made of plastic, no needle springs, they are using the plastic bending to hold the levels..

the type of floats being used.. LOL most of the time you find plastic floats, like in a 500 kaw, year model 2000, are made of plastic, the only way to fix the float height was to replace the needle/seat and floats.. What you have there is what we had back in the 70's to say mid 90's.. I'm sure there are others that kept the old way to setting floats.. But look at it like this, no days, bikes are full of computer aided stuff and when it breaks they replace it.. LOL

set mine to 22.4 bought a fuel level gauge gonna check mine when it turns up.i fiund 3 turns out was best,was a real bitch on the choke with less popping and spitting etc now its 99% better on 3 run good on the road too.

I'm a bit confused on the physics of that plastic tube setup for checking fuel level in the float bowl. I'm probably missing something. As I see it, the height of the fuel level as measured against the carb body, would vary significantly with different internal diameters of tubing, and you didn't specify that a certain diameter was essential. Also, how tight the tube was bent from the bottom of the bowl to the side of the carb would greatly effect the resulting level against the carb body measurement point. Seems like imprecise science at first glance. What am I missing here?

It makes no difference what the tube diameter is or how long it is because gravity. it's just a level indicator.

Tube diameter or angle have zero impact, the fluid finds its own level regardless. The only thing that could impact the result is if the fuel bowl was at a different pressure to atmosphere.

Thanks, but surely, the larger the I.D. of the tube, the lower the fuel level in the tube. The diameter influences the level the fuel will rise to. Consider a 3/8" tube as opposed to a 1/4" I.D. The greater capacity of that length of tube would lower the level it topped out at. Also, the radius of the bend from the bottom of the float bowl should make a difference. If the tube were one foot long for instance, and you didn't bend it tightly, the fuel level will be lower as measured against the carb body. What am I missing? There must be something I'm not grasping here.

No. The tube will level out when the float closes the needle and seat, whether the tube is 1mm id or 1 meter id. The only variable is the volume and therefore the time required to fill, there is no impact on the level as long as the pressure (atmosphere) is equal at both ends.

Thanks, it still doesn't compute in my mind, but I'll try to figure it out. My impasse is: how do you measure against a known point on the carb body, when the fuel level is dependent on the diameter of the tube? In your example above, if your tube was very wide I.D., the fuel level will not be able to reach the measuring point on the carb, no matter how you try to position the tube.
