GS500 Scrambler Build - Ep25 - Stainless Airbox/Plenum Part 2

finishing off the fabrication of the new stainless airbox, and fitting its mounting points on so now it bolts to frame nice and securely.
then moving on to routing the boost pipe from the turbo to the plenum. which worked out far better than i thought it would. just need to couple them up, prime the fuel, and hit that happy boost button now!!

Few tips, if you don't mind. -That air filter is way, way too small. You need a filter that's triple the size of it, at minimum. -When jetting a blowthrough, your jetting should actually be almost completely stock. This is because the pitot tube (when setup correctly) increases fuel pressure above boost pressure as boost rises, so it continually adds more fuel as boost rises. The OEM CV carbs are actually the best option for blow-through, except for the plastic tops blowing off at higher boost levels. -A good starting point for a Pitot tube would be an 1/8" I.D. piece of tube installed in the coldside pipe, facing the coldside outlet of the turbo (facing the impeller), with 3 equally spaced, 1/8" holes drilled in the tube. Run 2.3-3PSI of base fuel pressure, any more than 3, the carbs will probably flood. -Use the least amount of silicone couplers that you can. They have a habit of collapsing during engine vacuum when they're too long. -GR650 cams swap straight into a GS500 engine, and they have .040" more lift and slightly less duration. Best of luck. Dialing in a blowthough setup for your first time will either make you a believer, or make your give up on carb's altogether, lol.

Thanks for the info. I actually watch a lot of your videos to see how you do things like this. Love the twin turbo virago you've just done. There are so many different opinions on how to turbo this bike, its easy to get a bit muddled in what to do. But im looking forward to trying. Everydays a learning day.

You actually could try putting a small intercooler on that straight pipe between turbo output and air box. Maybe with some scoop to redirect ambient airflow through it. I think this will help to cool air that runs through turbo at least somewhat. Waiting for subsequent series, subbed. Cheers mate!

That came out rather well. What’s the logic to a pressurised/regulated fuel pump, just to get fuel into the bowls quicker ? I assume the stock carbs were already pump fed ?

Stock carbs are just garvity fed, so if the air going into the cards is pressurised, it will push the fuls back up into the tank, (or so ive been told, which does kind of make sence) so a fuel pump with regulator on set to just a little more psi than the turbo should even the score a bit. Cheers, im rrally pleased with that air box. Just hope it all works now lol

@@BareBonesMotorcycles ah yes thats what I was driving at except you articulated it a lot better, fighting against the turbo pressure. I assume jetting is more critical as well. Are you upgrading or changing the carbs ?

No, keeping the same carbs, but going to have to play with the jetting a lot i think lol

Nah, that should all be ok. Im only going for about 7psi of boost, so the engine should handle that without any issues.
