This whole thing breaks my heart. Rick James was an absolute innovator. BELTED his lyrics so ferociously that I can't believe he wouldn't take breaks between lyrical phrases. He communicated sensitivity, sensuality and sexiness in such a masculine way. He is sorely missed. I just wish he wasn't remembered by young people as a Dave Chappelle meme.

True but that 'Dave Chapelle meme' brought his name & music to a whole new generation. Youth today now hear MaryJane, You & I, SuperFreak, Give It To Me Baby, etc. on radio and TV because of that series of skits on Chapelle Show. They're learning.

I used to drive Rick in my limo back in the 80's. It makes me sad to think of the delayed consequences of an excessive lifestyle. He was such an incredible musician and human being! Yes, he did stand on the trunk of my brand new stretch limo, like Charlie Murphy described he did to Eddie's sofa! LOL. RIP Rick...you left a lot of groupies behind without somebody to FREAK them!

Love Rick James. The epitome of the word "Wild". Years later watching him in interviews, post prison. He grew up, he spoke very intelligent, thoughtful of life, being spiritual, owning what he did wrong, thoughtful about how music affects young people. Was very impressed. Was a very real and humble man. More so later in life. But at least he got there. The stories between him and Eddie Murphy and Charlie Murphy and Prince are beyond hysterical. Love me some Rick James. A fellow Aquarius. Rest in peace 🙏

The older I get, the more I resent the enduring popular culture image of Rick James i.e. from Chappelle's Show. He was an intelligent, thoughtful, talented man who seemed haunted by personal demons which led to his self-destruction. He did plenty of wrong but I also see a guy who tried to do right by most of the people in his life.

Rick James reminds me of my Dad. Btw both my parents love his music. As do I. My Dad 6'ft 3' inches was an Army man. When he spoke u better be listening. He was a college educated man but also had street knowledge as well. My Dad lost his battle at age 46 on 2005 to high blood pressure, alcohol, gout, severe osteoarthritis, severe edema, an esphogaus that closed up twice, many knee and cancerous growths on his eyes and ribs but after he died the doctors said there wasn't any alcohol in his system. They said he died of dialated cardiomyopathy. Heart disease is the number one killer in African Americans.

Man I can really relate to this last year I spent 5 days in my house before my brother in law found me on the floor and I couldn't even talk. I really thought I'd die before anyone found me. My cell phone had died on me and not begin able to get up I couldn't even get up to plug it in. I spent all of last summer in the hospital. Had PT for 3 hours a day. Then they sent me to another hospital for more PT. I still haven't fully recovered from it. I'm still having to go through PT for the past 6 months. Still can feel a BIG difference. If someone were to ask me how far along I was I'd say about 80%. I had no idea it would take this long to recover. I how ever was blessed to meet Rick in person 2 years before he passed. I got to see him live twice in 2002. Once in NC and the second was in Philly got him to sign my Fire It Up album and Process and the Doo Rags album..........
