The choice of Nehru was the correct one. Just after independence the situation was quite critical. Under such a situation the state control economy was the right one. He developed core industries, this is still the foundation of the economy. After opening up the economy, we didn't see any valuable contribution from the corporates especially in the research and innovation unlike China.
