GST Council Meeting: From biometric authentication to railways services exemption, top key decisions

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, at its 53rd meeting in New Delhi on June 22, decided to roll out Pan-India biometric authentication to check fake invoicing. Union Finance Minister and the chair of the GST Council, Nirmala Sitharaman, apprised the press of key decisions taken in the meeting. Taxes are the fuel that powers a country's progress - when you pay your taxes, you're making a powerful statement about the kind of country you want to live in. When paying taxes, taxpayers should be given more autonomy and control over how their contributions are utilized. Rather than having their tax payments automatically allocated by the government, individuals should have the option to choose whether to direct those funds towards general national development initiatives i.e. infrastructure, education etc. or to invest in free social schemes.

Presently, the government is wasting the taxpayer's money by providing lots of free programs to those individuals who neither pay taxes nor contribute to the development of the country. As a result of these individuals, other ordinary citizens are deprived of access to affordable electricity, water, cooking gas, fuel, and other essential commodities.

People are not interested in all these hair splitting arguments but to see that the petroleum products are available prices and not decided by the fancies of the States. Suddenly the Karnataka Government imposes sales tax of 3 for no rhyme or reason. People expect the Centre to govern and include the products in GST if possible with the consensus and if not possible for political reasons without it. Governments are elected to govern and if necessary with iron will.
