I was so surprised as a backer of this project to see that 99% of the updates are about merch, literally nothing about the game, I think they are overwhelmed by the number of backers and it is getting difficult to send the stuff to all the people, which is a bit sad because it has changed their focus from the game to art and merch. I do not believe we will see the game release anytime soon

I hope the team doesn't fault on the 'mental health' epidemic thing that is being pushed so much in social media. That team better be ready to let that $2 Million go back to their rightful owners and accept the backlash they would deserve as a result. Or get their asses in gear cause you can't just fault 'mental health' on their inabilities not when you are messing with $2 Million dollars that don't belong to you. Let alone, you can't 'mental health' you way out of this when you mess with the money of others in general.

I don't think it's entirely fair to write the game off as a failure just yet, as the devs are still actively working on it (they provide occasional updates on Twitter), but I fully agree that they're in way over their heads. This is a team of four people, and what they've promised on their kickstarter is incredibly ambitious. I'm not sure if they'll be able to finish the game and deliver on their promises, but I'd like to think that they can and will.

Looking back through their awards as well, yeah they in BIG. I mean even their smallest reward of Custom Songs/Character Sharing Network Hub is a HUGE task to add on top of the already planned existed game. Fully animated cutscenes, new difficult with new music arrangements, 15 additional weeks (45 songs), and a 10 week epilogue with 30 extra songs is going to be insanely difficult and back crushing. Not to mention that their already existing goal to get funded was 20 additional weeks (60 songs), unsure if that was ontop of already existing weeks or if it included the 7 weeks that already exist. Lets just say that it's already included. So they still have 38 Weeks to work on. Meaning 114 songs. Meaning 342 charts to make for the Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulties. Throwing in the Erect difficulties they now have an additional 45 songs and charts to make as well. Adding to a total of 159 songs and 387 charts. That's the base line of what they have to deliver. But that's everything. On top of everything I just mentioned. They also have to do a mobile build, Custom Character Creator, Custom Song/Custom Character Sharing Hub, Fully animated cutscenes, and Online Multiplayer. This is an insane amount to add to your plate and might not even be enough to be funded for 2 million dollars. Not even sure how much taxes took away. Potentially across 10 people right now included musicians.

Tbf he wasn't, and likely still isn't in a position to talk. Martin has also overpromised with his WF series and hasn't put out any content other than merch promo in a year and so (the merch being of questionable quality too), and arguably his project isn't as difficult as this one, not to undermine his work, but definitely not as complicated as a videogame. I'm not defending the FNF team at all, they set the bar for themselves way too high and are reaping the consequences of it (rightfully so, I'm as disappointed as the next person), but Martin not only threw the first punch, he punched his own reflection

This reminds me soooo much of the Omori kickstarter. Omocat also was promising the world without realizing how much work this would actually amount to. That and her team really poorly handling communication with the backers, led to a severe downwards spiral that left backers feeling like they got scammed and some even trying to take legal actions. The game did come out in the end and was pretty good, but its kickstarter clearly showed how overambition and miscommunication can quickly escalate. Especially when the devs bit off more than they could chew

There were even livestreams recently that are talking about the development while sketching stuff. The only thing they failed on imo was communication. Saying FNF failed is like saying that OMORI failed (which they also failed on communication), and that eventually came out. So I am confident that we all just need to be very... very... very... patient. And eventually FNF will come out.

I think the scariest part of Friday Night Funkin is how hard the game might flop. It feels like the modding community for Friday Night Funkin is going to continue cherry picking every possible feature that could exist within the game, add it within their own individual mods and then when the game drops, you'll be like, "Oh, these are the exploding arrows from the Tricky mod!" "This is the timing space bar taps from Lullaby!" "This is the dodge mechanic that was in Indie Cross!" "This is the life decay mechanic from Sonic.Exe! (Black Sun)" All of the gameplay mechanics and wonder that they could've put in the game will have been exhausted by the modding community, so when you play the full game, it'll probably just feel like a homage to all of the mods that have been made during the development of FNF and nothing original.

crowdfunding can definitely be a double-edged sword if your game gets overhyped, it ends up putting a lot more pressure on the devs to deliver on the fan's expectations this can lead to delays as the scope of the game increases to meet their audience's increasing demands and when the game does eventually come out, even if its received really positively, there will inevitably be people who are left disappointed by the final product due to having higher expectations

If the devs creates a full FNF game that doesn't reach Playerbase expectations, you know what mess they will faced against. Meanwhile the game got Ridiculous Support, and now the devs put under pressure as well. The reason why they don't put any progress showcase on any social media, is possibly to keep the people expectations stagnant, low possibly. Hyping player expectations by giving leaks and updates will result in similar case of "No man sky"

Honestly if it wasn't for the fan mods this game would have lost relevancy a year or so ago. The base game hasn't received an update in nearly two years and most recent fanmods completely blow the base game out of the water. If the modding scene dies, which it very well may by the time fnf actually releases, nobody will care about the project anymore. I've noticed the modding scene has been slowing down recently from its hayday of 2021 - early/mid 2022 as well, so the devs are running out of time...

As there are plenty of official comics on it that have been released fairly recently. @@TheSearchForTruth88 - I can see a couple of your other comments on here, and honestly I think you’re interpreting the actions of the devs in the worst light possible. This behavior doesn’t read as “blatant scammer”, it reads as “inexperienced edgelords trying to be funny”. I didn’t fund it (I suck at rhythm games) but I checked the Kickstarter because of this video. They promised 60 new songs, meaning programming, assets, and animations for 20 new levels and more original songs than most Triple A games have. This is also not including all the other random bells and whistles they tacked on. It’s gonna take a lot longer than a year with the size of their team and it was severely naive of anyone to assume that would be possible. As someone who’s brushed up against a lot of different Kickstarter game scams, people who are intentionally trying to scam others out of their money compose themselves in a way that’s completely different than a team going through production hell. FNF honestly reads as the latter to me. They made promises that they couldn’t fulfill in a timely manner due to being too young and inexperienced. I don’t think they’re actively malicious.

There was one ten months break between updates for Omori in 2018/2019, but that's it. I was really into it back in its heyday, and thought that I’d still enjoy it when it fully released in a few years. Well, those years have come and gone and now I barely care about the game anymore. The fandom got so toxic that I just left. It died before it even fully released. Pretty darn sad…

This is a good example of why scope is so important in making a game. A creator has 48 hours to make a game, so they make sure it isn't too big. If you have a year, make sure you don't try to make that big of a game, because though that might seem like a lot of time, it really goes by quickly.

The issue I see is that a lot of indie creators (and it's horribly prevalent with the ones that started on Flash websites) is that they lack management skills and understanding. The result is that when their work go from "passion project" to "actual business", they fail to properly plan their resource spending, and they treat their "financial backers" as "fans" who'll perfectly understand if they goof off.

Though, accepting some fan feedback on how to make the game better wouldn't hurt, as long as it's not overboard. Though, I will say that it's a shame that they don't pay attention to mods of the game. Because there are some really good ideas that would be amazing to see in the full game. They want to focus on delivering the backer stuff first before focusing on the game. Also, check their accounts y’all. That’s where you can get more updates about this stuff. They have been also hiring people for game dev, including a modder in the community. So,needless to say,the guys have been busy. Also, that date for the game’s release on kickstarter was for the game if it only hit 60k. I get people want to see stuff but Phantom Arcade said they actually want to surprise people with the stuff they have been cookin and not deal with people making mods using their assets, like what happened with week 8. This included 9/10 of their stretch goals, as of today, the game still hasn't shipped and isn't finished, it had an estimated delivery time of January 2019, four full years ago. Luckily they have kept a constant string of updates through out the years and have been very professional. a good way too develop a game is too keep the scope manageable during the development cycle so that the devs dont get overburdened i think hollow knight is a masterclass on game development in this regard the devs design philosophy was too always focus on expanding the size of the game, but making sure to focus on the most important, fundamental areas before delving into any additions/side content. this allowed them to add as much extra content as they wanted, but without worrying as much about being overwhelmed by their work; they could basically stop development of the game at any time, and have a complete product on their hands. in addition to this, a lot of the kickstarter rewards were added in free post-release expansion packs, so they wouldnt have to worry about those additions while developing the base game. smart decisions like this is how team cherry was able to craft one of the largest, well-crafted metroidvanias in history with only a three-person development team.

It’s weird to me. The biggest issue with FNF development is that I feel it’s a never ending race. How can you make the best version of the game, when the fandom is doing it 1000 times better & innovated. At first it blown the waters in the first few weeks. Then the community caught up the same time week 7 dropped. Now it’s been a long time since then, and you see this game’s fandom doing all sorts of insane things and mechanics we never expected from base game. So the devs have to innovate to too that so it don’t seem underwhelming, but at the same time not give into what the fandom wants. Rather what they want. As for the kickstarter stuff, yeah. I feel like they set themselves up for too much, and couldn’t live up to it right now. At the same time, this game could take ages to finish with what they had originally planned. So who knows the outcome of this.

Like genuinely what is stopping them from hiring more people, more art designers, more coders, like seriously what’s their excuse? There are some people making monstrous creations out there and all the base game does is use the same bf skin for 4 weeks straight and has a few absolute bangers! (FEW!) Honestly I think they could pull most of what they promised off, if they hire more people, a lot of this is four people with a lot of over ambition (trust me I know trying to make an fnf mod with more than one week takes more than One lone animator, one composer, one coder and one director). It’s an indie game with a small team it’s gonna take a while. We’ve seen things like this happen with omori and a hat in time, taking way longer to make than originally intended, but turning out amazing in the end.

It makes sense that the game is going to take much longer than expected with the amount of extra stuff they promised however they really should keep people updated more often

i really appreciate when developers and companies make jokes and talk with a friendly tone to their audience, but in this case it just feels annoying the joke posts made back when the kickstarter was still getting money are fine, but now that the game is expected to get updates, launch, and give backers their rewards it's just a pain in the butt to see them taking nothing seriously, especially that one post you mentioned that was fake and just in the end there was a note clarifying the CDs aren't actually done some people gave dozens, hundreds of dollars for this game to become a reality, they deserve to receive actual news about the game rather than the devs just making gross and unfunny jokes about the game they look like 15 year olds trying to be cool and quirky, and it feels like it's a way for the devs to cope with the development hell of the game and the KS rewards

I used to play this game all the time in my Sophomore year of HS (2020-2021 school year), but I stopped playing like during 2021 Summer because the game was getting old. Thank god the mod community is around to make the game more FUN

They should hire some of the developers that made FNF mods to be a part of the development team so they can get some helping hands.

in defense of the physical media part, it has been shipping since like, november or december, which is when i got my stuff. also phantom arcades streams, newgrounds posts, and various twitter threads werent taken into account

The physical media could have been released much sooner if not for the utter incompetence of Ninjamuffin somehow giving Needlejuice records the wrong customer information. Kickstarter backers should also not have to leave Kickstarter in order to find out information about the project they backed. The point of Kickstarter updates is to inform backers about progress on the project, which for whatever reason is not being utilized. The devs never told Kickstarter backers that they must watch streams, look at Twitter, and ect. for updates. It is assumed all game updates will be posted to Kickstarter, as that's how Kickstarters work.

FNF seems to be going through what I call the 'Minecraft cycle' - it was very popular, then kids started to like the game so it was associated with cringe, and it will eventually become popular again and the cycle continues.
