I bought this guitar about a year and half ago. I spent months playing different guitars, such as the Martin OM-15M and all mahogany Eastman parlor models. But from the very first moment I played the FYM66HD, I just knew this is a special guitar. I have no regrets. This is the one guitar that will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands, because you'll never get it from me any other way. I'm glad someone gave it a proper review, thanks John.

After a year of chasing a used FYM66HD, I finally snagged one! I've had it for about a week now and don't think I'll ever look back. This guitar has such a rich sound and is so well balanced. Every day I find something new I like about it. The neck is especially comfortable for me and I find certain challenging phrases more accessible, which encourages me to practice and push myself more. I can't say enough good things about it. You weren't wrong-thanks, JP!

As a huge fan of Yairi guitars, having 4 of them myself, I was led to your channel by your first review of one. I stayed for all of the other great stuff posted. This all HD mahogany guitar is one I was looking forward to hearing more about. Having played only different spruce and cedar topped guitars, I was a bit leery about what hog would sound like as a soundboard. That guitar does sound fantastic! Once you have reviewed all 3 of the current Yairis, it would be fun to hear them back to back. ...Love the channel - Thanks!

Just got one of these. Your review persuaded me, and I'm glad I saw it. This guitar is everything you said in your video, just blown away by how good the FYM66HD is. The bass is to die for, it's tight and punchy, not boomy. The mids and highs are sweet and it has lovely overtones. There is not one bad thing I can say about the Yairi, it is an utterly amazing guitar both sound-wise with immaculate construction. Even my wife mentioned how good it sounded. One year ago I bought a Gibson LG2 acoustic (similar price range to the Yairi). Well......... It's been nothing but trouble (lots of quality control issues from the factory) , and the "Vintage V Neck" with its gloss finish being so cumbersome compared to the Yairi's sleek satin finish and ergonomically shaped neck, making it much easier to play. The Gibson needed considerable work to make it playable, the Yairi came perfectly set up with no issues. This one's definitely a keeper. I've tried other brands of all Mahogany guitars, and most have a very boomy bass, with dull highs, but the FYM66HD is not one of those, it's definitely a chameleon, which can fit into any style of playing. Thanks for your excellent video!

I've had a Zager 'Travel" model for some years. The neck/fretboard is very nice, particularly for my small hands. I play it along with instruments that are much more expensive. My only complaint: Like most "travel/parlour" guitars, they are 12-fret instruments, and I like the extra range of a 14-fret instrument.

Thanks for another excellent review, JP. I, for one, didn't think too much of a guitar with a mahogany top until now. Now I'm a real believer instead of just a "dream believer". Ha! I hope you keep these reviews coming. In my opinion, they are the best acoustic reviews on KZbin.

I have been playing for about 25 years and have owned Martin's, Gibson's Taylors, Yamahas, Alvarez, you name it... J.P. knows what he is talking about. Younger players, listen to this man! Some things about guitar are subjective, we don't all want the same things out of tone, but when it comes to paying too much for that name on the headstock, there's a lot of snake oil in the music gear industry and KZbinr's like J.P. Cormier are helping cut through the all the effort these companies put into brand building, etc.. I happen to also agree with his taste in tone, Mahagony is a fantastic tone wood and it's my favorite as well. I do like Mahagony top guitars as well, but for back and sides, it's always Mahagony for me. Rosewood almost always cost more, but that cost doesn't mean "better tone" it means "different tone". In the United States, and really Western Civilization, we're taught to think in linear terms. The more you spend = better. But guitars are more like paint brushes, hammers and mallets. They are tools. You could go to the hardware store and spend $25 on the best mallet they have, hand carved handle or whatever and it's still not going to do the job of a hammer as well as a $5 hammer could. When you think of guitars this way and realize the schemes the gear industry plays it really opens your mind to options.

Fantastic. I recently bought the Alvarez masterworks om66 with solid mahogany back and sides and a spruce top. It is astonishingly good in terms of tone, with a beautiful strong midrange, and plenty of volume. Completely unexpected at the price point and it gives me so much joy to play. It’s not entirely perfect out of the box but a couple of hours with a luthier will finish it up beautifully. So by this reckoning, that Yairi must really be as mind blowing as John makes it sound.

JP, would love to get your take/review of the FYM60HD if they can send you one. Considering how great this sounds I'm sure it's amazing, but the Adi top is a completely different tone that would be nice to hear for comparison, especially in OM form. It would also be interesting to hear it vs the DYM60HD.

Martin owners kind of hate these guitars. I don't get it--is there a rivalry or something? At an open mic once, a guy came up after my set and said--"oh you got one of those old cheap Alvarez guitars." I figured he was joking so I laughed. Then he talked for about as long as I would listen to how much he spend on his. Didn't his mother ever tell him that just because it costs more doesn't make it better?

I own a 1990 Yairi DY59. Perfect condition. I love it, even beyond my Martin. Yairis have a sound and feel like no other guitar I have experienced. My dui59 is a dreadnought but it has the same kind of balanced tone going on that this guitar does. I don't know if it's the tone or the attack of the notes, but my Yari is incredibly responsive and dynamic. But the bass stays tight. Paid $650 for it in 2019. It's every bit as high quality as a Martin Standard Series. It sounds different, but excellent. Playability is far better than my D18. It's in a whole different level of refinement, in my opinion. On par with high end Taylor guitars. I'm admittedly a Yairi fanboy. Only reason I write this is to try to influence people sitting on the fence about these wonderful guitars. I literally just ordered this guitar earlier today and was surfing videos trying to peak my excitement! If it's anything like my old one, its going to be great. If I'm lucky it'll be better than the old one.

Finally took delivery yesterday of this masterpiece. I figured I should come back and report my thoughts where it all started; this review. It’s unbelievable, and just as advertised (except the tortoise strap button, oddly?). A remarkable instrument in every way. Everything I expected for sure (and I expected a LOT). I was gonna say that JP overstated the volume of this one, BUT I just realized that when I tested it out, being a fingerstyle player, I didn’t even try it with a pick! When you pick it with a plectrum it goes from merely ‘extremely outstanding’ to ‘completely stunning and almost unbelievable’ in tone, clarity, and indeed, volume. It’s difficult to conceive of a guitar sounding any better. Thank you for the detailed and entertaining review, sir. I’m set for life on acoustic guitars.

I had played this guitar several times at my local dealer, liked it, but wasn't sure; you convinced me-- my Taylor 717e BE WHB was a straight across trade at my local dealer. The Taylor is well built, and well marketed; it is a good guitar-- I liked it, just couldn't bring myself to love it, after a year... your review was the button that needed tho be pushed. Dealer had two; I A/B played the two; came home with one. Thank you-- your Martin vs Alvarez video was an influence here; the name brand hype is not neccesarily the deal-maker here. My new Yairi guitar is twice the guitar as the Taylor. Did I say Thank You?...

JP, I stumbled upon your channel a couple months back, as I have been guitar shopping. Buying my first new instrument since 2011 or so, since I’m using some Alvarez Regents from that timeframe. Great beginner guitars that I got when first starting out, which are still more than serviceable, but.... It’s time to upgrade! Thought I wanted a Martin 000-15SM until I saw this review. I’m sure the SM is a great guitar, and especially for the price, but this just seems to kill it in every aspect I can think to consider... Balance, dynamics, overall volume, sweetness, and styling. I’ve been shopping for hours a day online and having trouble getting one below the current MAP of $2399. I even tried to buy a blemished one but got sniped by a matter of hours! After about 2 months of consistent effort, I finally got a great deal on one that ships in September! I’ve probably put 10-15 views on this video myself, and I’ll be watching this review over and over again between now and then. I can’t wait! Thank you for the informative and entertaining review. It pretty much directly made a sale, since I can’t play one in person, as much as I’d have loved to. Talking with the dealer I ordered from, he estimated (admittedly, off the record without specific true numbers known) that there have so far been less than 200 or so of these made overall. Batches nationwide (worldwide?) seem to be about 6-10 per quarter at this point.. so if you folks want one, I’d advise not falling asleep on these. They really won’t (can’t) be made forever. I’d love to know the true number, but let’s just say it probably isn’t gonna be 1,000! Any old guitar center just isn’t gonna have one up on the wall to try out. I’ll be sure to report back when mine finally comes in. Thanks again, JP!

I wouldn’t worry. I mean, it was invented and first used in the mid-80’s, so we don’t have like, hundreds of years of data. I’ve owned a couple of fast cars, but I don’t race. Had pickup trucks for 30 years, but I hardly ever use them to haul or tow. Yeah, I’ve had the “but I don’t deserve it” guitar thoughts, too, but I’ve decided (today, in fact) that if I want it and will play it and respect it, I’m going to get it. I’ll work on “deserving” when I get it in my hands.

Love the playing and review. Is the fretboard edge rounded or more squared-off? I'm really becoming a fan of rounded edges as my hands age. Thanks.

Ok gang, its down to a coin toss for me so need opinions. I am ready to buy my 2nd Yairi but am stuck between the FYM66HD OM and the Dread version DYM60HD. I have been beating on my DY62C for over 20 years and it's time for an upgrade. aaaaaand go!.....

OK JP I just snagged one of these minty used FYM 66 HD. It arrived yesterday and I don't think it was played at all. It was not very opened up and I thought "uh oh!?"but I played it hard for an hour and it transformed like nothing else I've ever witnessed lol played it again for a little while last night. Put it on the toneright overnight and this morning, it was a vibrating, resonating beast. Very warm and very sparkly as well! I just it at my Sunday church and h boy oh boy... HUGE! Beautiful, warm.. just unbelievable! completely different than the two other guitars. You advise me on… MYD60HD and the Boucher studio goose OM 51. My three acoustic guitars, all of them you have advised me on, lol! You have not steered me wrong, sir! They are all peerless

JP The tune that you finger-picked was out of the world. Easily it is one of the most beautiful performances - rather rendition I must say - that I have ever heard. Pray tell whats the name of that tune. You are in no way out of practice! Most important - please let us know if you have played this tune on any other youtube video of yours? THANK YOU!!

Sounds like ‘Spanish Fandango’, which if I have the partial history correct here, was a song that was included in the instructions to some old mail order/sears roebuck guitars. Maybe old Harmony or Stella guitars? In any case, due to wide distribution of a version of it, many guitarists such as Mississippi John Hurt and others did versions. A great tune!

@@dylanthomas7443 I’m not sure! He said what sounded like “D-tuned” indicating a D-based tuning. But could have been “de-tuned” meaning just not in standard. I have wondered that myself... in any case, not standard! Hopefully he sees these comments, and can clarify, but not sure how often he trolls through the comments of old videos...

I ordered that DYM60HD after seeing your review and hearing you play it. I had to wait SIX months to get it and the result was a VERY HAPPY CAMPER here! I have a gorgeous 2004 Martin J40, a Yairi 12 and other "lesser" guitars that I don't mind letting friends and even strangers play and gee wiz JP I have to tell you that I love that new dread Yairi! It's an amazing instrument and it BLEW my Martin away, which I would have thought impossible. Still love my J40 but I always reach for the DYM60HD first. Can wait to hear this review and hoping I don't wind up with GAS (again)!

JP, do you feel the same wide neck as the DYM 60 HD? i realy like wide neck that gives a little more space for your fingers! Also, on youtube, the Alvarez co compared the FYM 66 HD against the FYM 60 HD AAAA or Adirondac top, not sure, and they said that the 60 was twice as loud as the 66! Holy crap, you're saying that the 66 mohagony top is a freaking cannon that hurts your ears if you're to close, i mean..imagine if they say that the FYM 60 is twice as loud as the FYM 66 HD😮! Did you played the FYM 60 HD??? Thank's JP!

Take the USA price and divide by 0.76 to get the CDN price. That works with pretty much all USA pricing.

After seeing your review, I thought about it for a few days, then went ahead and ordered one. I hope it sounds somewhere near as wonderful when I play it as it does when you work your fingerpicking magic. I got an Epiphone Excellente 5 months ago, based on your glowing recommendation, confirmed by playing it in my favorite Houston guitar store (Fullers). I have been so delighted with that one that I decided to trust your recommendation. Today I went ahead and ordered an Alvarez FYM66HD Yairi OMe sight-unseen and not test played by me. I've only done this 5 times before (Epiphone Dove Pro, Martin OMC-16, & Breedlove Amazon Jeff Bridges from Sweetwater), Martin OM Cherry from ZZounds, and a Harley Benton 12-string electric from Thomann Music Store in Germany, and I haven't been burned yet. Fingers crossed, this one will be one of my top 2-3 favorites to play.

You ruined me with the previous K.Yairi review I went and tried one in a shop here in Tokyo and absolutely fell in love. I tried a few Gibsons first, then Taylor but nothing hit me with the responsiveness of the Yairi. It was amazing. I bought one that evening. It arrives in a few days. 🎉
