Because us acoustic types are FANATICAL and yer average guitar player is still 13 yrs old and sweating on his/her first electric guitar. We've awoken to the fact that acoustic guitars are just f^&$%in' amazing. and nothing else will do.

Because sadly, far too many people live in "the mainstream world"...........current "radio hits", sports, movies, and "the evening news". They are utterly clueless when it comes to realizing there is a literal sea of outstanding musical talent out there, who never break into the mainstream. These musicians are the best of the best, and of course JP is one of them. One must seek out and find talent of this magnitude, and that includes their youtube channels.

When I went to uni in 1971, my friend played guitar. I saved and saved, and when she went to Sydney (from Bathurst, NSW), I begged her to get me a guitar ... one that sounded good to her. She went into town where the biggest music store was back then, and she played every guitar in my price range in the shop. She came back home with a Yairi nylon string classical guitar manufactured in 1968 and signed, which I still have and love playing till this day. It has grown sweeter and more melodic over the almost 50 years I've had it. It's still in beautiful condition and makes my heart sing every time I get it out of the case.

I agree with you too, about the 'space' on the keyboard ... I found it very difficult to change from this to another with a narrower one.

Awesome story! I have so many guitars in emotionally attached to and I haven’t had any near 50 years. I have a Alvarez ambfd60 and I’ve had it for 10 years and I’m attached to it. Actually ended up pawning it years ago and it was sold. Almost a year later found it back at the shop and bought it back. Also have a friend who moved away and gave me a Martin drs1. Another guitar I can now never get rid of. I think it’s so cool how guitars make stories of their own. Rock on friend!

The tone out of that guitar is insane. The richness of the bass is something I've only ever heard in Rosewood, but it definitely has that warmth you expect of Mahogany - just better than I've ever heard.
@pbasswil
@pbasswil Жыл бұрын
Huh, interesting perspective. Subjectively, to me this A.Y. doesn't have the depth of a good Martin; but that's probably just my surface impression, because it's got more high-mid & high zing to it than a typical Martin does. So the overall tonal balance seems to tilt more toward the highs. The lows could actually be about the same, if you measured it in dBs, but I'm not sure.
@BobsYoureuncle
@BobsYoureuncle Жыл бұрын
@@pbasswil I have to appreciate your response to Josh. The fact is each guitar model has its own sound, as does each separate brand. That being said , I think this Yairi has the most balanced tonal character that I have ever heard so far on any acoustic guitar. I have two Martin's and three other acoustic brands. I love my 000 15M ... but this Yairi having Mahogany b and s actually has the output of Rosewood. That's impressive. JP , at the beginning of the video I was assuming that this was going to be a video about some odd anomaly offshoot guitar. Boy was I wrong ..... ! ! As soon as you Finally pulled it into view of the camera I was impressed by the colour and the tightness of the grain of the top. Furthermore , I never thought I would ever be impressed by details of an acoustic guitar , but I have to say I love that fretboard , the headstock colour and design, and ALL the aspects of the way the neck is constructed..... that just really rocks my world. This is IMPRESSIVE IMPRESSIVE IMPRESSIVE .

The sound of this guitar and the wideness of the neck and wide string spacing reminds me a lot of my Furch Orange guitar. Very similar sound and playability. I also have a 1991 DY90 Yairi I bought brand new for $1200 USD in 1992 and have owned and played it for 32 years. I was fortunate to be exposed to Kazou Yairi and his guitars at the early age of 22, I'm now 53 and still run into people my age and older who have never played or owned one and when introduced to his guitars are instantly blown away and can't believe they never knew about them or about Kazou one of the greatest Luthiers of our life times. Gave my DY90 to my son this year so he can enjoy and play for another 30-40 years. These guitars that Mr. Yairi built are not only top end boutique guitars, they are literally Heirloom's to pass down in the family for years to come. I have no doubts that 100 years from now, if taken care of that DY90 will sound even better than it does today.

The attention to detail and craftsmanship is incredible, masters at work on every bench on every aspect of guitar! Beautiful to watch! Stunning. I was expecting an industrial noisy production line, but was amazed at how quiet and meditative the atmosphere in what an specialist craft workshop! Fantastic back story for the Yairi, never knew there was so much history for the guitars he made. I bought mine in 1979 as a graduation gift to myself, it was made in 1978. The model number is a bit faded, but I believe it is DY57, I love this guitar. So easy to play and love the tones.

Coolest thing about Yairi production process that I found was that they actually play music to the finished instruments so that the woods will vibrate at musical frequencies, 'playing in' the guitars.

I hope you don't mind a wordy tale but, this is my story about Yairi, Alvarez and Chris Meikel is as follows. In about 1975 I was shopping for a new acoustic guitar and had about $400 to spend, which put me within reach of Gibson/Guild etc. There was a Yairi right next to that range and it was a brand I had never heard of before. It was the guitar i walked out with, a DY-57 with some seriously beautiful wood in it. About 6 years ago I was looking for another acoustic guitar (I have had many steel and nylon strings over the years), and saw Alvarez brands online in some Australian shops. My gut reaction was that it sounded like a cheap brand with that name when they were made in China, but I still did some research. As soon as K Yairi's name came up, I was sold on trying one. I live in Tasmania and a lot of shopping has to be done online for certain 'luxury' items (Music shops exist here but not many but have limited range in terms of brands and value). So I bought one and had it sipped down. I was so disappointed. It was the MD-60 which was made from all solid wood with nice fittings and finish, but the neck was bowed beyond recovery. It turned out to be a storage issue with the importer, a problem that has been fixed since this problem was bought to their attention. I rang the import.seller and they gave me a budget of $400 to have a luthier look at it, but the luthier too declared it beyond salvation. So it was agreed I'd return it for a refund, and at their cost and have a think about what I wanted to do. meanwhile I had messaged St Louis Music on FB and told them of the problem with the guitar, their Aust importers storage, and my immense disappointment. Chris Meikel came back to me the next day and said hold on and don't buy anything just yet. A few days passed and he asked for my shipping address, which I gave him with a question mark. He said he was sending me a replacement by way of an apology for my experience. A few weeks later a brand new Masterworks MD70 in luxury case turned up at my door compliments of St Louis Music company. That stands out as the best customer service I think I've had. It's a fantastic guitar. Beautiful sound. Balanced. Very responsive. And very loud.

Was given my mom's Yairi today (from her, on her 87th Bday). Her "old" guitar. I didn't really know what it was and of course didn't care because it was hers. It's a Yairi, hand signed and hand numbered with "year built" of 1971. Needs to be restrung, but otherwise it's in brand new like perfect condition. I think it's a keeper.

Clearly that Yairi guitar is that kind of instrument. Many years ago I had the chance to play a 9-string Alvarez-Yairi DY58 that belonged to my brother, and it was a really great guitar. Great review on a great instrument. I have a Alvarez Yari WY-1 (Bob Weir model) that I purchased new in 1993. Cedar top, rosewood body. Fantastic instrument. I would like to comment on your bridge review. It's a great design but does have a drawback. There's a lot of forward pressure (toward the nut) which caused my saddle assembly to roll forward in the bridge slot. I had the slot widened and installed a custom saddle which, also eventually rolled forward, cracking the bridge (where it gets thin at the high E string). Fortunately, I was able to buy a new saddle and nut assembly from St Louis music. I now apply bone oil to the bridge every string change to keep it from drying out. Unless you have a humidified music room like Vince Gill, it's something Alvarez Yari owners should be aware of.

Fascinating . . . I am familiar with the Yairi story to an extent but you have certainly filled out my knowledge of the history. When our band broke up in 1979 I began writing and producing soundtracks - films and commercials - in New Zealand I bought a K. Yairi Nylon String and an S. Yairi 'Parlor' Steel String. Still play them, I have picked up a few guitars along the way but when it comes to recording these 2 are my go to instruments. I recently noticed that the flagship store for Gibson here in HK had a few K. Yairi guitars on the wall and I bought an unusual single cutaway steel string with a built in pick-up that I am having a lot of fun with. I did notice a few that look a bit like your one - the have a sort of Martin vibe to look at but with the inverted 'V triangle' Yairi logo and I have yet to try them because I'm afraid my credit card company might take a dislike to me, and my wife for that matter. Anyway - thanks for a great vid! Check out Peter Madill if you have the time - he has been making guitars for NZ players since the 70s and still in action. I have played 2 of his acoustic 12 strings and they come across more as Grand Pianos! 😅

I have a K Yairi classical I bought new in 1981. It is a 1980 Anne model. Hand signed.Brazilian rosewood back and sides with a darkish milk chocolatey cedar top. It rings like nothing else I've heard. The head stock looks antique and almost pre-aged looking, with a beautiful carving. I never had a case for it for 35 years and managed to keep it virtually damage free. I think it fell over once and has a very small dent in the neck, and a few very small chips in the body edge in a few places. Otherwise Excellent. I'll share photos if anyone is interested. It looks as good as it sounds. Thanks for this wonderful video. Love your playing and your love for the gift of music. I never really learned to play classical styles but when you have this in your hand everything just rings and rolls over what ever you do play. This guitar brought me back again and again to progress to steel strings. You are so right with this maker. Thanks for the info.

Thank You!!! John.......i'm new to your site and so glad i bumped into it looking for info on earlier 1980 -1987 Alvarez -Yairi Dreadnaught's.....Thats when i spied your post of The amazing story of Of Yairi Guitars featuring your full review of the DYM60HD.... I was all IN after hearing the first 4-5 measures of your playing. I'd not heard sound like that since since the early 1970's from a Gruhn guitar made of Brazilian Rosewood .....John I did the one thing i had to do, I found and bought one. Bottom line ......the faith i put in your review,...my ears... and the Yairi Craftsmen... was rewarded to the hilt...... I can't put it down , it's the best playing neck just as you stated in your review and it's voice just keeps getting better......... As a final thought, when it first came out some years ago, i too assumed the new Direct Coupled bridge set up was a gimmick of sorts. What a dope, that certainly is and was not the case, it too adds in a brilliant way to, to the sound it was designed to produce. Great work John! Thanks Alvarez Yairi!

Been playing for 20 years and purchased my first Yairi (fym66hd) just under 6 months ago. Far and away the most exquisite guitar I've ever played. No way I can articulate the magic that's in that parking lot mahagony, but my God, it's breathtaking. Would sell my Martin 000-28 before the Yairi if I was forced to choose. The Yairi's are some of the best stringed instruments ever crafted by human hands. Beyond underrated. Great video and history JP.

Bonsoir from Eastern Ontario, J.P. Cormier and followers. I stumbled on this KZbin community and this Yairi session is the clincher. I've just subscribed! I'm a Larrivée and Martin guy -- I don't play well, I just like playing! -- with a J-45 "sustainable wood" Gibson thrown in. But to me, a guitar is both an inspiration leading to great music and a crafting masterpiece. I enjoy these sessions. Keep up the good work, mon ami!

"OK"... I will climb out on a 'limb' (?) and first, freely admit... I have learnt so much from yourself as a Professional Musician and your freely shared knowledge and experience of a wide range of Brands and Models of Acoustic Guitars... John, If I had that guitar in my hands (?) I would do Two things ?? (which I do with ALL my purchases of Acoustic Guitars)... apart from examining the 'grains' of timbers, which generally, catch my eye first (not always fullproof, but a good guide)... Firstly, having identified an Acoustic I 'possibly' may purchase ? ... Hanging the guitar by the neck, I gently tap the four corners with the back of my knuckles on BOTH front and back sides... I am listening for an echoing resonance of equal vibrations... (This is difficult to find on Cut-away Models, but NOT impossible, many times than not, the cut-away quarter responds dead)... Dreadnoughts respond better than Orchestral etc... If I cannot hear satisfactory resonance from ALL four quarters, any Brand, any Model, I place the guitar back... Secondly, an 'old' Musician taught me this next, as a young lad... Speak to the guitar and see if it speaks back to you... Lift the Acoustic guitar up so that the sound-hole is level with your mouth and say "Hello"... A 'Good' guitar MUST respond... It will echo your "Hello" straight back at you ! If no replying echo... or simply dull, without any fuss... place it back... It will still be a guitar of value to some other purchaser... but NOT to me... These two simple 'Tests' have NEVER let me down and 'Price' is not an indication of quality of Tone... and THAT is why... I am jealous of no-one, including yourself., and I rate ALL your guitars as highly as my own, if not more so. (You DO have some of the very best guitars I have heard and am thinking... deservedly so)... and... those are the Two 'Tests' I would apply to the guitar you are demonstrating this day... I wish that I could (??) but think I would not be disappointed !! 'This' guitar in your hands, Alvarez DYM60HD., is a rare 'Beauty' ! and... Well played !

I've watched the factory tour on this guitar and still researching it. I love their old school approach to lutherie but I'm not sold on that bridge. Also I would love it if they had a pickup in it. That being said, I'm probably going to buy one. Looks like I'll be sleeping on the couch again.

What a great video thank you so much. I have been doing some research about Yairi guitars. I have recently acquired a Yairi Model #700 1966. She is in a little bit of rough shape. I was told by the Local guitar shop that it’s probably about 2 to $300 needed in repairs. I don’t know whole lot about guitars but I do have much respect for handcrafted beautiful items such as one of these. The guitar shop told me in the shape that she’s in now it’s probably worth $500. They also told me that they would trade it for any guitar in the store!! They had me scratching my head a bit. I really don’t know what this would be worth. My daughter is very interested in learning the guitar and would love to have a new guitar to learn on. If you had any advice you could send my way that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe

I have a yamaki 12 string I bought in the 70s . I don’t use it as 12string .I use it as a 6 .let me tell you it does have more room to play at the nut. Keep up great work for this important information.

I have a 1990 k.yairi, solid spruce top and mahogany back and side, beautiful satin sunburst. Paid 600€. Easily on par with Martins in the 1500€ range. Best neck I have ever played on an acoustic, including Martin and Taylor. It is not the guitar of my life, but it is a great instrument and I have been using it in my tracks for a couple of years now. When I bought it I compared it to a vintage d18. The d18 sound was unreal and magical BUT neck was uncomfortable, needed a neck reset probably and it costed more than 3000 €...so I took the Yairi and made money with the music I recorded with it and repaid it quite quickly... Also, my most succesfull recording was done with a crappy ibanez. Barely playable and sounding not that good. So I realized in the end it is actually what you do with the instrument and if it works for you that matters

I own a 2008 Martin DC 16 and a 1976 Alvarez/Yairi DY74. I pick up the Yairi more than the Martin. The tone is SO even and clear and the sustain from almost 50 year old wood is incredible! A true pleasure to play. I really enjoyed the comparison you did and I got them right! The sounds a very distinctive. Thanks!

The DC16 is a nice guitar but it is factory built, non-standard Martin with micarta bits. The Yairi is hand-built by a master luthier with some of the finest woods on earth! Even though I LOVE Martin guitars I'd take that Yairi over the DC any day of the week and twice on Sunday! Cheers P[>

Mr. Comier is definitely a human i would love to spend an afternoon chatting with. As a guitar player most of my life, from 12 years old to now 62. Still not even close to his level of ability. But his knowledge and especially his what you see is what you get persona is how I've lived my life. It's refreshing to see it isn't odd, or something from days gone by. You can still be true to who you are, and be likeable or personable. Kudo's sir. Look forward to the next time the notification of a new video pops up. ❤

Wild Mountain Thyme on the outro I think? One of the great ones, passionately played. Great talk/demo. Somewhere in the back of my noggin is an 8-string AY…double courses on the g & D, maybe? Never saw one in the flesh but seems like it would bring the chime of a 12 without the cluttered bass, and a bit of the Nashville tuning for a singer-vocalist or small combo… comments invited!

My parents owned a Music store in the 70's - 80s and we had close ties with St. Louis Music. We loved the Alvarez Yairi Guitars. Your review was extraordinary and your skills really show off an amazing instrument. Although I was taught 50 years ago to play my skills lack to own such a wonderful instrument Although I do own a Yairi that is closer to my skill level. This guitar belongs in the hands of a much more skilled player just to do it justice and not wasted. Thank you for taking the time to show it.

Other thought: the top on this one looks super clean, most adirondack is 'streaky'. I wonder if it's also old stock adirondack. Also I think the direct coupled bridge help improve volume and clarity, more piano like tones vs a D18 mahogany dreadnought.

Fantastic review sir . I actually brought a used K.Yari baritone electro acoustic jumbo with a Headway side mounted Sheer SA2 with slidable eq’s bass mid treble and master . The build quality is amazing and the sound is distinctive and resonates beautifully. Being a baritone guitar I have too sing in lower keys but it sounds unique. Great hearing the history of K.Yari guitars . I never knew they were from the Alverrez family of guitars
