All of your tutorials are very educational and inspiring! In August 21 of 2018 I blow up my Fiat 1500 engine because of an oil pressure problem (it was running on 15psi and it suddently stopped... the rest is told by itself). I was cheated by a mechanic so I decided to do everything by myself, with my low tool resources. I took off the engine and completely dissasembled it, measured what I could and go to the machine shop for the precision procedures. I also ported and polished the cylinder head as teached in your video. Also worked a little bit on the carburetor; I increased the compression ratio to something close to 11:1, and did a complete connectong rod and piston balancing, also erasing 36gr from every rod. I reassembled the engine following your procedures and advices, and the result was just perfect! 60psi of oil pressure while cold, and 55psi while at operatong temperature! Everything works smooth af and there isn't any kind of knocking or predetonation... and I did everything because your videos made me feel confident enought to try... I'll see if I post a video on my channel soon... *Thank you!* And Greetings from Argentina!

Hey Jafro love the video as always. I only have one tip that i learned in auto tech. When using the Molly lube you actually want to be very liberal with it. Under the washer, above, and a healthy coating on the threads. I’ve seen this change the housing bore measure a few tenths and it all comes down to the friction. It only takes one spot for it to grab and give a false reading and the worst that happens is you have some Molly lube in your oil for the cams.

As always, a great video! Good quality and good content! Nice to see the "mistakes and how to deal with them" from someone as pedantic as Mr. Jafromobile! P.S.: regarding temperature and measurement, those mechanical micrometers have no thermal compensation (should have a note saying that they are calibrated at ~20°C, yes I'm European) and if you keep them in the same place (temperature) as the parts being measured, for at least a couple of hours, days, it should measure correctly. I could single you out and blame you for having to spend $300 on it for lulz, but I'm just not that mean. I heard you, but you're not the only one. At least you were nice about it. Some of my videos with hundreds of thousands of views generate several torque plate comments per week. Nobody reads comments where I explain what I said in this video (and KZbin hides my replies from them now by default anyway, I'm livid!), so the torque plate comments just pour in over and over and over again. Sometimes with fire and vitriol over what those people witnessed for free in an internet video. I'm not taking my other videos down, but I wanted to at least fix the discourse in my GSX series. I can take every precaution possible and it would still happen anyway. If you detected any tone in the way I described it, it's not at anyone in particular. I re-wrote that part of the voiceover 6x to take the edge off of it, though. lol!

Love it! Gotta buy torque plates for my v6 vg30dett. Isnt it true that if youre going to use a torque plate you also need to have crank girdle bolted on and torqed down as that will add a potential area for block distortion while boring or honing as you want block to be as it will be in its final assembled position when doing boring or honing? Which is why torque plates are utilized to mimic and stretch induced during head attachment/ torque down?
@Z32orDIe5 жыл бұрын

Hi jafro, what do you do for a living? I’m curious how you have so much time to do all Of this work.
@ChristmasCrustacean15 жыл бұрын
Jafro having watched the kiggly main girdle install again, two things stood out to me. the mains weren't torqued in sequence, also the studs were run down till they bottomed out (we all saw the goop that was still left in the holes that you cleaned out). I'm pretty sure a combination of both of these things is what is throwing off the end result.
@Jafromobile5 жыл бұрын
I thought so, too... but... the studs were backed out again after they were installed so that the girdle fit. THEN it was honed. Afterwards it was measured, and it fit. Nothing was warped. The clearances (on a different crank) were perfect. If you watch how short the hone ran, barely anything at all was removed to make that happen, so what we're seeing here had to come from something else. Yes, there was goop. But like I said, the studs were backed out so that they cleared the girdle. There was a time when I suspected that, but I moved past it because I can't discount the studs being backed out. The sequence bothered me, though.
@ChristmasCrustacean15 жыл бұрын

Another fantastic video! I have been going through my engine build again since my timing belt jumped a couple teeth on the crank gear and I lost all 8 intake valve (a perfect score). And since I had to pull the engine anyway on the 4g63 Mini Cooper to fix everything, I figured why not upgrade the cams, valve springs, retainers, and cam gears and do a full jafro degree wheel situation in the garage. Funny enough, the exhaust cam won't dial in correctly. I have the HKS 264 264 cams which should just drop in, but instead the exhaust cam needed 12 crank degrees advance adjustment to line up the opening event but somehow the closing event is 3 degrees early at 15 BBDC rather than 12 BBDC. Not sure if you have run into this before. I'm gonna triple check the timing belt isn't a tooth off on the exhaust cam (but on my photos, all of the timing marks are lined up properly at TDC with cam dowels up and dash lines parallel to the deck/even with the other cam). Even if that fixes the the advance issue, it wouldn't address the shorter duration. This just doesn't seem possible to happen unless the cam is maybe a 260 cam? Just speculating at this point, but I'd love to hear your take Thanks, Ryan
@Jafromobile5 жыл бұрын
Each time you polish a cam, it removes material. The timing events being wrong... as well as the actual advertised centerlines being wrong... it seems are staples of the HKS product line. The cam duration should be scribed into the surface of the cam, so somewhere on there should be a "264" carved into it. If you've got that, then bank on the cam card's installed centerline and advertised duration being incorrect. They've been known to do this, and my cams weren't immune. The manufacturer specs are just wrong and why I gave that post from "Anoldsman" some light in my video. I fought with a similar issue but on the intake cam. What you measure will tell a better story. You're measuring lift at .040", right?
@InitialDIYmods5 жыл бұрын
@@Jafromobile yeah I found several posts referencing the installed centerline being incorrect in the intake side of the 264 HKS cams but couldn't find anyone with issues for the exhaust side. Both cams have 264 carved in (although one of the 4s was pretty sloppy that I hope it's not a supposed to be a 260 cam instead???). I measured the lift in between .039" and .040" since I didn't have a metric dial indicator. The cams look to be in great condition and don't seem to be repaired or overly worn but it's possible it was repaired at some point.

Jafro I would have a hard time trusting those wristpins. Did you consider jumping up a step in wall thickness?

Why not put fastener lube on the washers and nuts as well? Doesn't that also need it for proper tq? It says it in the ARP instructions.

ARP manual reads that not only bolt threads have to be lubricated with ARP lube but nuts and washers as well...

You should use the gasket with the torque plate, and why not measure you're main housing bores and bearings separately?

Was the girdle installed on the last build? Is it possible the girdle was throwing off the main alignment? I’ve seen the top of mains where the fasteners clamp down, not be well enough machined. So it makes the mains move out of spec slightly.

Jafro, sorry to hear about the block. Was the block not align honed with the girdle and studs? If not, that could have been the source of your problems I think.
@Jafromobile5 жыл бұрын
It was. The video is posted here. It was coated and baked afterwards. The clearances aren't all crazy because of warpage. The clearances were set off of a different crank, so the base measurements changed from one crank to the other. This butcher crank has smaller journals than the original. But what the block didn't have before was bearing runout. I did find something procedurally wrong with the align hone process, but it shouldn't have caused anything like this. If you spot it and want to talk more about it, I'll explain why not. I love my machine shop, and everyone there who worked on this. I'm not leaning towards that issue because of the coatings being twice-baked. Blocks don't get to 350° when there's coolant and oil in them. All of that happened AFTER the mains were honed. It's a good example why people should do baked coatings first before machining.

What are you thoughts on the 3.0L V6 Mitsubishi engine that was in the Chrysler Sebring coupe and convertible, dodge stratus coupe and Mitsubishi Eclipse from 2000-2005? I have a 2003 Sebring coupe with this engine with 198xxx miles, still strong besides ticking that comes and goes from junked up hydraulic lifters. Is this engine worth a rebuild? This car, when finished will most likely just sit due to the cost of saving it from rust.

Did you align hone the mains when you put the girdle?

Yes. It's in the Crankshaft Refurbishing video in the description.
