wow! thank you for the video and thank you for agreeing to look at it for me. The right man for the task for sure. 13 yrs. into this restoration and because of Covid and being in the shop every day I am sure this car will be on the road this summer. Thanks again ,Barry

Your explanation was far better than what I experienced at a major university when I was still studying engineering. That gearbox looks like a major overhaul is in line, or a replacement. Thanks, Elin!

Excellent explanation Elin. Just think someone sat down and invented synchro gearboxes... Just a small point but the damaged 3rd and 4th gear teeth would not be caused by the slack 3rd / 4th gear synchro hub as the gears are always in mesh. I suspect something has worn and fallen out of that synchro hub (because it is so slack) and got chewed up in the gears. Certainly the baulk rings will need checking. I would flush the bottom of that 'box with some diesel and see what 'bits' come out before filling and running it. Chipped gears (like that and not destroyed!) as such are quite usable as long as they are stoned to get rid of any burrs or ridges as they are never out of mesh but the synchro engaging dogs are what take the hits and will be damaged with the synchro hub sliding out under load.

You are right. I believe the ball bearing from the hub went through the gears (a couple hundred times LOL)

When you get the transmission testing rig done, I’m thinking you will want to test a single rail gearbox from a spitfire. Just so happen to have one out of a 1976 barn find I’m restoring. Just saying 😉

I actually never worked on a Spitfire transmission, so I am not familiar with the internals.

Elin I wish you talked some about the reverse gear and how it engages to the 1st gear slider. Its very strange how it free wheels when 1st gear is selected. If you go to the 8 min video index you will see what I mean. Not surprising that these gear boxes eat that rev gear in short order.🤔Nice job..

I was scared to watch this. Thought all of my transmission rebuilding would be in full 55” tv color for Mary and Georgie to see. I did an ok job on it but I’m not sure it will pass inspection by the master. Stay healthy

LOL, well your transmission is not going back on the car unfortunately (or fortunately) because I got the overdrive one. Hope all is good with you and Mary (and George of course :))

It looks like the bell housing is damaged where the clutch slave mounts. You might want to find another gear box. There is a guy in New England that rebuilds Triumph gearboxes.
@RustyBeauties3 жыл бұрын
I believe I have another bell housing. Yes, finding another transmission is not that hard, but you never know what the condition would be. It is up to the owner, but if it was mine I would rebuild it and know that I have something reliable in the car.
@Vespanation3 жыл бұрын
It's not worth repairing because, A) you can get a better used transmission to begin with, and B) this is not a GT6 transmission. GT6 transmission ID numbers begin with either KC, KD, KE, or KF. The transmission ID number begins with "G", which identifies it as a Triumph Herald unit, most likely a Herald 13/60. No point in rebuilding a transmission that's incorrect for the car and which has the damage it has. - Paul B.

Might need a new lay gear too, if the 4th is damaged matching gear will be damaged too.
@RustyBeauties3 жыл бұрын
yes, that should be expected.
@Afrodizyak473 жыл бұрын
Elin, why replace the bell housing? Could it be alloy welded and the bolt hole redrilled. which would be a lot cheaper and just as good. if done well.
@RustyBeauties3 жыл бұрын
Well, I believe I have one kicking around, but if I can't find it welding is an option too. I know a shop that does a really good alloy welding!

Elin, Other than pulling the transmission, have you found a way to get a clutch plate that appears to be slightly seized to the flywheel to come off? My project spit6 seems to have the issue of not wanting to go into gear (grinding) whenever the engine is running, but it cycles through gears fine with it off.
@RustyBeauties3 жыл бұрын
You might have an issue with the clutch master or slave cylinder. Does your clutch pedal feel spongy? I don't think your plate is is seized to the fly wheel, but in case it is you can put your rear wheels on jack stands. Start the engine while in 4th gear, get some speed and then press the clutch and slam the brakes at the same time. That should free it. But again, I don't think that is the problem.

I have a TR3 box that’s taken apart. I took the A type OD off it. It kinda belongs to Tush, although I’ve had it for about 10 years! Let me know if any of it would help you with the GT6 box?

@johnmoruzzi72363 жыл бұрын
It has obviously been run to death, stuck in a corner, then sold on to an optimistic new owner. Find a better one unless you can find another donor gearbox looking for a use.

Yes, finding another transmission is not that hard, but you never know what the condition is. It is up to the owner, but if it was mine I would rebuild it and know that I have something reliable in the car. I might have a donor transmission. Just need to research a little bit to see if parts are compatible.
