It is good, but I think the best was /Drive, Chris Harris comparing the then new GT86 against a 370 and a well used Cayman. He was though already very pro the GT86 after driving the car at the track in Spain (pre-launch). Another good one of late, was on Autocar, where they were really comparing the the Alfa 4C with the Cayman, but the GT86 was added for "what the heck" - suffice to say the 4C did not fair well.

Aren't Mazda and Alfa Romeo working together on the new MX-5/Spider?
@autodelta9310 жыл бұрын
not anymore. FCA decided to produce the new "spider", based on the MX-5, with Fiat or Abarth brand, because all Alfa Romeo must be made in Italy.

It's audiably chugging below 2k rpm. It doesn't like low revs and you have to get to the top of the engine for the power. I have no idea if this is a normal sports car thing though, the 2k rpm thing. But most sport cars do have their peek power higher up. I usually shift around 3k, anything lower doesn't really have enough torque.
@thisisbenji9010 жыл бұрын
Crossed Even more powerful cars are not that happy at low revs. My Focus ST doesn't even like to be driven hard below 2-2.5k and I'm making well over 300tq.

Great review, I was wondering about the history, I knew Subaru, loved it and that Scion/Toyota one of them came up with the idea, but overall, what I think Subaru needs to do next is their iconic performance thing to do. Make an sti edition. The only complaints I've heard is a lack of power after a while, so a small to mid-sized turbo option putting it around 250-300HP would be perfect.

Well I have seen the GT 86 no room in the back? ( like inches only) and RWD I am now a confirmed fan of FWD; they are less likely to do a 360°( like my Lexus used to) and you can take them up to the mountains in winter snow!

Concept, execution and design impressed me....but my only negative is the low HP and torque! This would have to be under $20k to convince me that it's better than my Speed3. Dealerships tried to sell it for $28k. My MS3 was $23k...and it's a beast to drive...can put hair on your ballz. The BRZ really needs 220-240 hp.

I'm currently in the market for a new car and I love the 86, its one of my dream cars. However its so expensive for its target market, I could drop £7,000 on a deposit then £270 a month. Or a fiesta ST 3 door is more practical, faster and just as much fun on a B road and £200 a month on lease.
@fatboy1983110 жыл бұрын
The Fiesta St is just as much fun to drive as the BRZ. From a dead stop the BRZ is faster. The Fiesta makes way more torque but lacks the top end to keep up with the BRZ/86.

+keanehgz Exactly what I don't understand. 25 years ago Toyota could produce a 20 valve inline 4 that produced 240hp and revved to 11000RPM, why then did they look for a boxer engine?

I can't believe no reviews of these cars have mentioned the car that spiritually spawned them, the original AE86. Why did Toyota even look for a boxer engine when 25 years ago they could produce a 20 valve inline 4 that produced 240hp and revved to 11000RPM.
@EclipseDante8 жыл бұрын
You've watched too much Initial D
@wwyk19938 жыл бұрын
But was I wrong?
@EclipseDante8 жыл бұрын
No you weren't. I also don't understand why they needed Subaru's boxer engines, but I figure it has to with the cost of research and development for a brand new engine since Toyota doesn't really have any sporty engine in their current fleet. An engine from 25 years ago doesn't meet modern emission regulations. Which is why they're not able to use it (let alone the fuel consumption). But those are just my thoughts though.

yeah the 370 has 130 more hp its a no brainer, oh and the rear seats on a gt86 look useless
@apache123465710 жыл бұрын
yeah but Chris Harris is a car reviewer who goes everywhere sideways in the real world when you want mid range torque for overtaking and smooth getaways the 370z is way nicer to drive
@fatboy1983110 жыл бұрын
apache1234657 The 370 weighs 500 pounds more than the twins. The Z drives like a good sedan not a sports car. The G37 is better driving and more practical for not much more money. The rear seats in the GT86 / BRZ work for small adults or kids or you can have a full size person sit side saddle. You can also fold the seats flat for more storage space. The BRZ has a better driving position and far more room for the driver than the Z. Yes the Z has 130 more hp and half the real world fuel economy of the twins. Oh yes in the states the Z cost $5000 more to start.
@apache123465710 жыл бұрын
yeah but the gt86 sucks in the real world because you have to thrash it if you want to overtake someone, if you want a fuel efficient car with lots of space buy a prius
@fatboy1983110 жыл бұрын
apache1234657 No you dont. You can pass in 6th gear, It is a 2700 pound car. About the same as a corolla. As long as you weigh under 250 pounds there is plenty of speed to be had without winding the pee out of the engine. I am 6.5 feet tall. I cant fit in the z. I can wear a hat in the BRZ. The BRZ handles far better than the Z also. If you want strait line speed. By a Mustang. You will be able to buy one this year. 420hp with the V8 330 hp with the Turbo 4.
