I can vouch for the need to choose a proper test-drive environment for the FR-S and BRZ. I used to sell cars for a Toyota and Scion dealership and I sold triple the number of FR-S' in my span of time there than the next-best seller of that car. Most of my co-workers chalked it up to me being young and a car enthusiast, therefore better syncing me with the primary demographic of the car. While that's partially correct, the real trick I used was a different test drive route. Every other car, you drive out of the dealership, through town to the highway, ride that for a few miles, then cut back through some suburbs back to the dealership. That's fine for a Camry or Rav4, but it's antithetical to the purpose of an FR-S. Instead, I took customers for a short jaunt through town before cutting back to a mountain road that I used to live on. It's extremely twisty, very technical, with lots of corners of varying severity and character linked together with plenty of elevation changes in between. You drive it for about 4 miles, then there's a turnaround spot. I'd drive the first leg of the trip, since I knew the road like the back of my hand, and would use that time to really show the customer what the car can do in the proper environment. Without fail, whenever we reached the turnout spot for us to switch, they'd always be grinning ear to ear and holding onto the armrest with a deathgrip, before looking over at me and saying "So...my turn, right?" Obviously they always went slower than me on the way back, but neveretheless I encouraged them to have some fun with it, within limits of reason and skill. Before I left the dealership, I told the route for the test drive to another salesperson that I'd become good friends with during my time there. I told him to take a few weeks driving it by himself to properly learn it, as well as giving him from proper pointers on particular corners. A few months after that, he'd taken the spot as the top FR-S seller in the dealership, though he still hasn't quite matched my numbers, haha.

I had a 2011 WRX Limited, and now own a 2013 BRZ Limited (both manuals). I just placed an order on a 2015 WRX Limited (w/short throw kit). So... here are my opinions on the matter. AWESOME video. I agree almost completely. BRZ felt so sharp compared to the last gen WRX that I ignored the lack of power. It took me a good month before that wore off and I started to get frustrated with the lack of power. Had I come from a slower car (like my college honda accord 4cyl), I probably wouldn't have a single complaint. But coming from the 2011 wrx and its brutal acceleration.... the BRZ gets boring when you don't have curvy roads to carve. Besides the lack of power, I really honestly have no complaints. The new 2015 WRX. Awesome car. Test drove a premium the day I placed my custom order. First thing I noticed, pedal delay. Even with the twin scroll, that turbo lag is apparent. It's very tiny and spools stupid fast, but you lack the instant response of a NA car. Had I never driven the BRZ, this would not even be mentioned because the old gen WRX had terrible turbo lag. But really, that new motor is excellent. You nail the pedal and that snail spools quick to deliver you that wall of torque. It felt much quicker to me than the old wrx and it greatly gained drive-ability. One point that I disagree on is the part of the video where you said the WRX has body roll. I took the WRX around some tight clover ramps and there was zero body roll. Maybe the high seating position made you feel like it was rolling, but i assure you, it wasn't. Even subaru stated it has the same amount of body roll as the BRZ. If they offered the FA20DIT motor in the BRZ as an optional engine... man... I would be having some serious decision making to do. But with the weak straight line performance and the lack of curvy mountain roads in the midwest where I live, the WRX is the better choice for me. The new WRX felt like a high seating position and slightly heavier BRZ that has balls-out acceleration. Can't beat that! (unless they release a turbo BRZ... )

This comparison can also go to the second Porsche problem, the cayman is way more expensive than the Mecan. And the Subaru is even worst if you think that Suburu joined Toyota just to make it less expensive and still is more expensive than a WRX which is more "high-end" I mean, has better materials and a better engine. SMH

Yup I can see why. Better driveability with new WRX engine. I drove a forester xt with the new twin scroll engine. Wow its a blast. Zero lag compared to my 2011. I wish they had a hatch then maybe I'd look into trading up. BRING BACK THE WAGON!!
@TheStigHCE0910 жыл бұрын
This man knows what's up. I've also driven both (not owned either of them, but I did give them both a good twisty road blast) and short of the high seating position and the 6-speed manual's shift quality (also have driven a Premium with the Lineartronic, and EverydayDriver I urge you not to diss it until you try it!) the WRX feels every bit as good to fang around as the BRZ does. And also in agreement re: body roll, it's incredibly well-controlled. It was, however, less comfortable (due to the significant increase in rigidity) than the GE WRX RS40 I drove a fair while ago. And there's no excuses for the seats in regards to the GE either because that had STi Recaros which you could practically live in. Not that it matters because the GJ WRX wipes the floor with the old GE in pretty much every other respect, but it is worth noting. If I was actually going to spend the cash on either it would definitely be the WRX, it's essentially a sedan BRZ with significantly more punch and who the hell wouldn't want that? But, because I'm a poor bastard I'll be sticking with my GC8 WRX for a while yet :)

yea the brz could do with more power, a turbo etc etc, fkin etc, but dont forget that the big thing about the brz is that it was about making a statement; forget about more grip, more power, more this, more that... lets remind manufacturers to concentrate on the fun, not the more, more, more. its what makes the car interesting (plus its an unbelievably good track tuning base)

I own a BRZ and I will say that everything about the car is GREAT, except for the power. Fuel Economy, Insurance Rates, Aesthetics, and Handling are second to none in it's sub $30k market. With this said, I haven't driven the latest 2015 WRX yet. After about over a year and 6 months of ownership of the BRZ, I can attest that I do want something more practical (wished Subaru continued to make the Hatch for the WRX), but the fuel economy and overall drive- ability of the car is what's preventing me from trading it in for the WRX. Perhaps when the STi's decade old EJ motor is replaced with the new FA Motor, then I'll either trade or buy another Subaru. For a daily commuter, like myself, the BRZ is plenty for the wallet. I average around 30 mpg, driving 40% city and 60% highway.
@fatboy1983110 жыл бұрын
I am with you on that. I don't even know if it truly needs that much more power just more push on the top end. I wish the BRZ sounded like the WRX!! I have averaged 32 mpg from new. I have been completely shocked by the mileage. Especially with the short gearing. As long as you stay under 80 mph 35 mpg is easy on the highway. Go to the dealer and do the FREE Navigation upgrade. New firmware, antenna and maps. Works 100% better.

First hand experience about the car's handling. I was driving my MY 18 BRZ on a snowy day and an elderly driver cuts me off in his truck. I was next to the road barrier and thought for sure I was going to hit it head on after turning the wheels in a panic to avoid hitting him. The car's stability control saved me from hitting the barrier in an instant. The Blizzacs did help too though.

BRZ doesn't need a turbo. Just 500cc more displacement. Way more in tune with the car's character, and it wouldn't add any weight. Kind of a no brainer and a real head scratcher as far as why they didn't do that from the get go.
@fatboy1983110 жыл бұрын
The 2.0 is a tad slow to rev. It is 10 times better that any other N/A Subaru Boxer ever made in that light. A 2.5 would need better cooling, a larger gas tank, brakes and would throw off the weight distribution. Not only that the already middling 22/30 mileage rating would take a hit. Taller gearing could be used, that would bring acceleration back down to the 2.0. At best there would be a 25% increase in torque with only a slight increase in HP. The 2.0 was the best compromise.
@future6210 жыл бұрын
An increase in displacement would not require changing anything. Plenty of cars use 1 engine block with different displacements, and the same brakes/cooling/gas tank. Case in point, old BMWs with the NA 6s. The 2.0s had all the same stuff as the 2.5s and the engines weighed the same too. It was the same engine with a smaller crank and slightly smaller pistons. Smaller engines are better to a point... below that point you wind up using too much throttle and wasting gas. And in any case I think folks would be willing to lose a little gas mileage for a better torque curve... this is a sports car, not a Prius. Aside from gas mileage nothing would be lost by going up to 2.5L, and they could make the 2.5L a short stroke engine so it would rev faster.

future62 BMWs like Mustangs and Camaro's are desighed from the top down. Hance the small weight difference between lower and higher power cars. The FRS/BRZ are purpose built cars. Subaru must upgrage all the compnents to add more power. The WRX weighs 400 pounds more than the Imprezza it is based on. 2.0 was the best compromise. Name one Japanese 4cy coupe that got better with an displacement increase.

I agree with you and love commuting with my BRZ. But... I can see why someone might not like the quick steering on a long road trip, or the loudness/rough ride on an everyday basis. It appeals to the Lotus-lover in me, as brought up in the video... but not everyone wants to or can deal with a Lotus-like car every day. Fortunately, I'm happy to, and I do think I'm much happier sitting in traffic or going down a straight road with a car that's being communicative even then by being rough and unrefined. It only gets better when you do get on a road where you can have even more fun!

Great vid. I was itching for a fr-s a while back, and if I chickened out as something to use everyday as my only vehicle I was going to buy a WRX. Practicality and traffic manners were my concern, but I really wanted it. Plus, after having a few "jack of all trades" cars, I was really yearning for a proper sports car. Rwd, great steering, great balance, a drivers car that felt special. More than just speed. Something that would make me a better driver, not just faster because of awd and a turbo. Anybody can do that. A year later? I love my FRS. It's not fast, but it has made me so much better as a technical driver it was worth it. I love it more every time I drive it, and still look forward to leaving the driveway every day. I could not argue that the wrx is the better choice for speed freaks, but for true drivers? The "Twins" are nearly without peer. All the bolt ons in the world won't make the wrx a sports car. It just comes down to what you really are looking for. Great video as always guys.

Bought a BRZ after visiting my local Subie dealer. The BRZ was built to be a sportscar, and you can tell when comparing it to the WRX. However, I don't live in snow, don't care for the extra power (most people don't feel that way!), and it is my third vehicle, so it is really my "fun car". I think for most people who need a daily driver, the WRX is going to be the superior vehicle. It just doesn't make me feel at one with the car like the BRZ does. I had one of the first 2013 BRZ in my area (jun2012 at the dealer) and I have to let it go. I just ordered the new 2015 WRX... I needed the extra kick. I loved My BRZ. But, I wasn't about to spend all that extra to get it super tuned up. I had all the bolt-on's on it and it was great to drive it. specially with better sticky shoes and lowered. But, The WRX is better for my area weather conditions year round... .This will be my 5th subi and proud to own them. Great review guys!!!

I feel like the majority of people write off the BRZ due simply to its stat sheet while neglecting to even drive the car. Call me crazy, but I walked away with a bigger smile having driven the BRZ than I did with an M3 coupe. Both were six speed manuals, but unless I was planning to track my car, the M3's limits are just too high for everyday driving. I am not trying to end up in jail and, as a result, the BRZ has so much more usable power. As for the power deficiency, I found that the gearing ratios were long enough to where I could really rev it out and just listen to the melodic boxer engine. I was so focused on the tachometer that next thing I knew I was doing 60 in 2 gear and later 90 in 4 gear. Add to that the fact that it handles like its on rails and has virtually no body roll. And due to its low seating postion, it felt, to me, as if I was traveling faster than I actually was. The cockpit-like seating position is very driver oriented. While I do not deny that the BRZ would be better with the WRX's engine, I came away quite satisfied, with a huge grin on my face, and the last thought on my mind being that the car lacked power. I only compare the M3 and BRZ as they were sports cars that I drove within mere days of one another. I have yet to drive the 2015 WRX although I have driven the previous generation WRX. I hope to experience the 2015 soon.

Maybe they should put a variable intake length system like the Honda Prelude vtec had. You got a slight boost from switching to a shorter pipe at the 3.5k-5.2k rpm from that, with your vtec from 5.2k.

The BRZ/FRS are way over priced. It shoud be a $19k-$24k car max. I saw one at the subaru dealership for $31k! Why would i want to spen $31,000 for a BRZ? Especially when Mitsubishi a few blocks away has a few evo 10's left going for $33,000-$36,000. The FRS and BRZ are good cars but anything over $26k IMO is insane......

Of course the WRX is the superior car in nearly every facet, and the STI is better than the WRX. Only concerning issue is MPG in the STI. Anyone that complains about the ride of a WRX or STI need to step back and realize they're shopping for the wrong car, and should head to their nearest buick dealership. I'd say BMW/etc, but if they have money for a good model BMW (235i for example, or CLA45 AMG even) they should probably go that route for that better ride, yo.

...how many dirt roads do you travel down on your daily commute? Also, do you have checkpoints to make ahead of other drivers? It's nice the WRX is a "Rally Sedan", but we don't drive on a rally course everyday. I'm looking for a car good on the road and in life. For those of who actually rally race, I have no doubts the WRX is a great choice. However, I hear the BRZ, in rally spec, is a pretty good car too, in the RWD/2WD class.

Why? just why every magazine writer, blogger, youtuber and critics says that the WRX is ugly I saw the car live and its looks great, looks mean and also the thing I like the most is like it doesn´t look so flashy or so fast in the mirror, it can pass under the radar if you are distract, most people don´t know what this car can do and I find this feature awesome, instead th BRZ looks to flashy too sporty, you know if you stop in a traffic light next to another sporty car it says that you gonna race it and the WRX is discrete but not ugly or bad design, I study Industrial Design I know the concept it´s way better but the real thing is not bad or poor design, the only but I put it is does remind me the first time I see a BMW 330i, but again is a car half the price with an outstanding performance

@TylerN9458 жыл бұрын
Technically they have similar engines, the FRS has a FA20 which is the same engine as the WRX but it has Toyota's fuel injectors, the WRX has the FB20F which is a turbo charged version of the FRS engine with subaru's injectors. In the end, a Turbocharged FRS will deliver better track performance.
@jimmylai79698 жыл бұрын
+Tyler Nandalal - FA20-D4S is in the BRZ/FRS and the WRX has the FA20DIT. There is no such thing as the FB20F. The only thing better about the FA20 than the FA20DIT (besides the turbo) are that the heads flow slightly better. Arguable would be port injection on the FA20 vs. direct injection on the FA20DIT. A hybrid FA20DIT bottom and FA20 head would be the best combo for max power. I agree that a performance focused BRZ will be better on the track, but you need to get your facts straight lol
@TylerN9458 жыл бұрын
***** the FA20 DIT is the FA20F, I accidentally put FB20F. The FRS has the FA20D (Most people just say FA20) and the D4S mean Toyota's D-4S injectors. But everything else I said was correct, Its just that a typed FB20F instead of FA20F which is the DIT. The FB20B and FB20X are similar engine's to the FA20 but they don't put out as much power.
@farhan0078 жыл бұрын
Unless you care about high way pulls and traffic light drag races it trumps the WRX. It sits far more lower. It has better weight distribution, It's lighter. It drives like a go kart and the WRX drives like a truck in comparison to the BRZ. That feeling translates to the public streets.
@not12listen10 жыл бұрын
as quite the car enthusiast, i sincerely appreciated and enjoyed this review. without a doubt, this is one of the best online car reviews i've seen. no real fluff, no bs, just side-by-side comparison between 2 nearly equal cars. i absolutely appreciate the differences between the 2 vehicles being pointed out - AWD vs RWD, etc. the only thing i could possibly hope for is a brake comparison. to 'future62' - the engine setup is purely on purpose - the 86mm bore and 86mm stroke is from Toyota's best engines (3sge/3sgte/2jzge/2jzgte). never prior has Subaru ever made a 'squared' engine - so, give Toyota thanks for the brilliant engineering on that count.

I'm here because i'm considering trading my 2013 BRZ for a 2016 WRX... Honestly for the last year or so i've really been regretting the purchase of the BRZ, but when i was shopping for a car the current WRX was crap... I paid 32k for my BRZ limited with a few extra features and i feel ripped off, honestly i just want something more practical and something more powerful....
@farhan0077 жыл бұрын
Matt Ramsey get a WRX then? It's faster but drives like a SUV compared to the BRZ due to the much lower center of gravity in the BRZ, much lighter weight, better weight distribution and of course rwd is always more fun than AWD aka newb wheel drive.
@farhan0077 жыл бұрын
Jee Vang funny thing is the Miata drives softer than the BRZ. It's lighter but the steering has less feedback with a slower steering ratio along with it having a slightly higher center of gravity. The BRZ definitely feels like a go kart relative to other cars in the market at that price range. Both the Miata and BRZ are the most go-kart handling like cars in the 20-40k price range. You need to step up to things like the Cayman or Alpha 4C for the next level of car that feels 'gokart' like?
@Gregorevn7 жыл бұрын
Nice videos guys, I have watched almost all your vids on the BRZ/FRS/86 and they helped me make the right choice for me. Which was an 86, only reason is that there is better local support from Toyota than Subaru. I don't care that it is not that powerful, whenever someone passes me I just smile wait for some corners ;)

The CVT in the WRX is nothing like a traditional CVT. Its kinda of irresponsible to comment on it in such a blunt manner, when you haven't driven it. Try it...then comment. Other than that, decent article....except the WRX truly is the better car on every level. It's not really even close.
@Bristecom9 жыл бұрын
I personally like the CVT's better than any auto or even DCT for everyday driving. But I'd still rather have a manual.
@KrazaK879 жыл бұрын
Stef o It's kinda irresponsible to say "the WRX truly is the better car on every level". It has higher COG, more weight, a more muted steering feel, a lesser transmission, it's AWD (less fun), body rolls much more, seats are worse, +more. It has some things over the 86, but by no means is it truly better on every level, that's just factually incorrect. The general consensus is that the 86 is a better pure drivers car, and the WRX is better to live with day to day.
@stefy719 жыл бұрын
KrazaK87 I agree the BRZ is more lower, more sportier feel. Thats about it. How do you figure a car with less horses, less torque, no turbo, no AWD, worse suspension, and zero winter capability, is the superior drivers car? Also, all articles I've read agree that the BRZ seats while sporty, and less comfortable then WRX seats.
@KrazaK879 жыл бұрын
Stef o If you think AWD is the preferred platform for driving enthusiasts, there are a _hell_ of a lot of enthusiasts that will argue that you are dead wrong. The suspension is worse in the WRX, due in no small part to the restriction of more weight (body roll). Winter capability has no weight in this conversation. There are cars designed for that, the 86 is not one of them. I live in Australia, I will never have to drive in snow. Ever. The 86 seats are indeed sportier, which tends to come with less comfort; Again, comfort is not a (considerable) factor in driving sports. As has been said many times, by many publications - If you want a track/sport/enthusiast vehicle, go the 86. If you want a comfortable daily driver that can get the shopping done and still give you some thrills, get the WRX. It's silly to suggest the WRX outperforms the 86 in every way. Just silly.
@stefy719 жыл бұрын
KrazaK87 Ok so YOU live in a place with no snow, and the 86 cant do anything in snow...so we just omit that category? Uh no. WRX is an all year performance car....why the hell would I just omit that? While I see your point with regards to AWD vs RW, I think I speaking from a launch / race view...where AWD will destroy RWD all day. The 86 is slower, has less torque, and is NA egine not turbo. WRX is a rally inspired machine, where as the BRZ , FRS, 86....is a cheap sports car, that has some good looks, and decent handling. It is NOT an engineering feat like the WRX is. Your making the WRX to be a Camry daily driver, and the 86 to be some performance sports car. Dude give it up. The WRX is the vastly superior, and more expensive automobile.

+EXillw I had a g37s manual. so I can tell you as a platform the g37 is more balanced and it's engine more exciting. it's interior more upscale. the wrx is certainly more planted. the engine torquier and the fuel economy is better. it's stiffer feels more secure. interior is economy car and I expected nothing more from an impreza based car. power is good. I'd sti prefer a larger naturally aspirated engine over a smaller turbocharged one.

+Jimmy Lai I own one man. it's an economy car interior. there's nothing wrong with that. the value is in its power train, chassis and simplicity. Im not complaining about it I did buy one after all. compared to my Infiniti there's way more hard plastics. especially on the doors. it's impreza based. there's no shame in that. if you have been in a gti you'll see the massive difference in interior quality between the Subaru and the VW. it's just the way it is man. I love my wrx and am very happy with it. just don't expect premium interior finishes versus actual luxury or premium compacts. that's why the legacy exists in the Subaru lineup

I'm stage 2 with el headers, ewg etc.... pretty much everything ready for a turbo upgrade. I love the car still, just mod for mod the evo is faster and seems to be more reliable

Yeah because I rolled the car to the dealer like that and I cried, "why won't you help me?!".... No. The car returned to stock and went, waited months and have been jerked around which I've never been technically denied but I just said enough is enough, and bought shit I was going to buy down the road anyway

And don't get me wrong, if they told me I flashed I would've called it a day and move on but why not try? Yet I was never told I couldn't because of that. There have been thousands of Sti that have ring land failure on a stock tune since 08 and it has never been fixed. The new 2.0 wrx fa motor is supposed to be their savior and time will tell. But why is the Sti still stuck with this goofy ass ej? The motor is old and in my opinion the wrx is a far greater car now because of the 2.0. Why should I spend the extra 10 k more if I'm getting an old motor?

It is a 14. I don't think that's the only difference, the Sti is still superior, my point though is every year the wrx is better and better. It used to be a breeze on the decision to buy a wrx, now it gets harder and harder and you begin to wonder is it really even worth it to get the Sti. Obviously they won't put the same fa motor as in the wrx in the Sti, you can only assume if they do it'll be much more superior. Allegedly Subaru is planning on putting the 2.0 here in America, yet I hear rumors the Sti is being discontinued which I think is doubtful and hope it's not true. In the end, we need something new in the Sti, we've been at 305 crank forever. It used to be a hard choice to decide Sti or a pony car for performance. Now it seems like if you don't have a winter, the 5.0 or this new 6.2 Camaro is the way to go
