Their switch scenes are practically a detailed explanation of each of the their personality traits. Franklin's switch scenes show how much of a normal life he is trying to have. He minds his own business and doesn't go looking for trouble. The few where he's in someone else's business, he's usually trying to calm Lamar down - further proving how he doesn't want any trouble for himself. Michael's switch scenes show how depressing his life is. His own family has issues with him due to his sociopathic behaviour and it doesn't help that he's always alone most of time, showing that he basically has no one to relate to. He's also shown to be paranoid of what might happen if he continues with his criminal activities. Trevor's switch scenes show how he doesn't care about what society thinks about him. He does what he wants when he wants to. Unlike the other two protagonists, Trevor acts like he has nothing to lose and isn't afraid to put himself in life threatening situations - be it with people he fights with or wandering off to strange places while high or intoxicated. Even their colours detail their personalities as green is associated with positivity (Franklin), blue is associated with sadness (Michael) and orange is associated with unconventional tendencies (Trevor).

This will always be cool to me. Not only the way the game handles switching between characters, but the fact they animated all of these different transitions to show you insights into how these characters live their lives. And even though the “cloud screen” of GTA 5 gets dogged on a lot because of the online component, I still love the way it zooms out from one character, scrolls across the world, and zooms back in onto the character you switched to. It makes it feel like the other 2 characters you aren’t playing as are constantly persisting throughout the world. I hope the next GTA has multiple protagonists. It’s super cool.
