To give more context on the "Utah teapot" lee was talking about, It's great for testing because it doesn't require texturing or lighting to be recognizable, it can cast shadows on itself, it has points where the topology is "saddle shaped" (which is not so relevant anymore, but back when it was originally created computers had a harder time dealing with that) and has a hole on the spout. This means you're able to test almost every aspect of displaying a 3d model from code. From as basic as loading in the model to reflections and texturing.

Software developer here. I would like to point out that machine learning neural networks have been around since the 1950s, so there *has* been AI that's like modern buzzword AI (i.e. not just preset "if...then...else..." statements) for a long time. The current buzz about AI is specifically surrounding generative AI, i.e. machine learning models that generate complex output rather than just classifying things or performing a single narrow task. In particular, the term "AI" has started applying specifically to generative AI that includes the Transformer architecture, which Google researchers invented in late 2017. TL;DR: AI that learns rather than just following preset instructions has been around for like 75 years, and the modern buzz about it is just because the invention of the Transformer architecture has shown everyone it's capable of being far more general and powerful than previous iterations made it seem. Regarding the "developer rooms" of assets: I work for an animation studio, and the artists call that the "zoo". Just a stage where all the assets are given their default settings and placed in a grid, so they can easily be copied/pasted into a new scene later without having to re-import and re-setup everything.

26:33 actually I'm surprised they didn't talk about how nervous Caine sounded. And then after, he took a smoke, which is something that people do to calm down (well he didn't actually smoke but you know the point) It seems like (for now) that the purpose of the circus was just to entertain some children for a few hours, and Caine doesn't know how to deal with a bunch of adults indefinitely.
@lighttheshadowreaper51026 ай бұрын
Yeah kinda surprised that passed them by after the whole interfacing derailment. But personally, I saw that scene differently. Caine wasn't nervous because he's dealing with adults indefinitely. He's nervous because he's running out of distractions. The first episode implied that he'd been doing this stuff for a long time, and likely to keep people from thinking about their existential dread. But that form of coping can only work so long as the new things keep being new. Once you get used to it, your mind will start to wander, and that could cause you to dwell on the things he's trying to distract from (which would lead to abstraction). You can kinda see it in how the first mission was obviously hastily cobbled together with random objects and a barebones plot. And again this time where nobody is buying the whole adventure plot at the start, and he has to physically push them into the portal to get it going.
@vegladex6 ай бұрын
Oh I like that a lot. It's very clear he's out of his depth, but putting it like that makes a WHOLE lot of sense. The idea of the beginning scene with Jaxx & Ragatha on the sides of Caine as being like God next to an angel & a demon is a pretty good catch. This reaction made me want to rewatch both episodes to try to understand it from the perspective of what Caine's motivation is for that specific adventure (the fact that he programs in a church of himself is telling). Also, checking for Jaxx's 4th wall breaks. Very fun reaction & commentary!

I do agree with Lee. As a gamer, AI was used to reference NPC behavior. so I don't think modern AI immediately but rather in the game context. Especially with all the 90s game references with Conker's and Resident Evil in this episode. I think the game was made in the 90s. Too many things line up with 90s games. But the game could have been shut down for a while with Caine still running it. I don't get malicious behavior from Caine. But I don't think he knows how humans work psychologically either. He just doesn't quite get it. So he had good intentions but ends up making things a little worse for the humans in it by killing GummyGoo. But since Cain makes these NPC and these worlds, he is essentially their god.

28:23 I have a pretty simple theory for this, basically Caine is shown to be the games master of this world, he's the one who sets up the adventures, the characters, the AI. So while this it does seem surprising that the queen mentions Caine as a god, it is also feels like it is kinda just playing similarly to games such as Legend Of Zelda where one character is like "So you're the one who was sent here to save our village!" I just thought it would be a nice thing to point out because Caine is the one creating these adventures that the gang has to go on, so it makes sense for him to be called a god because he is the one sending the gang on these quests.

38:44 I'm fairly certain is a reference to a game called Pizza Tower which makes me think that this scene was animated around when that game blew up on the internet, I belive you strike a pose in that game to parry or get s? So It implies the ground that the gummy gator is on might be dangerous because of the sharp rocks (I could be wrong tho It's been a while) Also at 50:10 the reason Gummigoo's eyes are different to the model of himself he's looking at, is because the model is using the default expression/no expressions, a lot of models usually have a huge variety of facial expressions built into them that aren't always visible, and the main Gummigoo Is using these facial expressions since he's been coded/scripted or whatever it is to allow him to do so, unlike the testing model which could be a rig for animating? You usually see a ring around the base of a model when it's an animation rig for a character I think.

12:47 I think it's calling back to the nature of how game consoles or pc CRT monitor of that area would respond to the amount of data of processed images in software such as video games. For example take a game like Spyro. Why did it have that look at all? It was a unique consideration of scanline effects from CRT TVs to not have resolution restrictions, data compression, and interlacing to make the amount of data of movement of images and polygons easier to handle. Spyro and other games under that umbrella (Think Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Quake, and many others) would usually have a 256px polygon limit for their assets, so to save processing power and capabilities of showing more assets in those kind of games, they would use interlacing, scanlines, and compression to give the game a natural feel while maintain the graphical and intuitive structure of their software. This has that effect for a reason, to show to limited amount of things that happen in the Amazing Digital Circus, despite Caine's potential as an AI. This would also be considered for shaders and texture fidelity as well.

The "Interlace" effect they discussed isn't actually interlacing at all, this is what I think is called a chunked scan delay chain effect. A scanline delay chain effect has a higher delay as you go further down the display, and can result in some very interesting effects when it comes to motion rendering, allowing for interesting illusions to be made using it. The effect can be applied to each individual line to provide a smoother effect, or it can be chunked into several line segments, as we see here, To provide a more deliberate curtain blinds-ey visual. Interlacing is two half-images crammed together, and results in a much more back-and-forth type choppiness.

48:47 while a dev room is possible, I don't think that's what this is. In most 3d engines assets are pre-loaded somewhere in the map so they don't have to be streamed at runtime, you commonly see this in games as just a-posing models out of bounds. By keeping them loaded most engines can more efficiently either just move them into the scene or create copies without any jitter from a load-in. Some devs like to just toss in some untextured box to keep them all in to help organize during development, if you noclip around in game levels you'll almost always find some variant of this (some devs like bethesda tend to just keep things out of bound near where they move to, or at the 0,0,0 origin as well). It's a very common game dev trick. I think that's what we're seeing here, a model pre-loading area for a scene like you'd commonly see in unreal/unity.

3:24 They really just called MatPat Kaufmo, _"The Clown that disappeared"_ wow guys 18:04 The ragdoll affect from Gmod videos and Valve games like TF2 and Half Life, nice to still see that affect used for things today 38:50 It's a Pizza Tower reference, he's doing some Taunt poses 41:10 If _"Submissive"_ then _"Agree"_ some _"If "About to hit someone" "Don't""_ 42:40 As someone with Figurines, mabey Gangle has some Figurines, mabey of her Friends, and mabey they're spicy in some way, or... As spicy as Caine would allow 47:20 The term is an _"A pose"_ not quite a _"T pose"_ but it's close 48:00 Yep, The Fudge also reminded me of the Great mighty poo

yeah the style pose reference reminds me most of like, old club penguin surfing or those sorts of surfing games where you’re hitting those poses exactly haha- the noises especially too, and even the scenario of being dragged behind a truck or boat very much fits that aesthetic

21:47 I think MPPEP is a digital hallucination, like how some AI in our world makes images with people that have six fingers and make signs that say SPTP instead of STOP

I think pomni might be from our world today, but the game itself is from the 90s

I kind of disagree, in the firat episode she didnt seem to understand what a vr headset was, just calling it a "weird" headset

@@HornAndHaloWrestling true, hmm idk

@@HornAndHaloWrestling She probably called it 'weird' because of how old it looked, or because she hadn't seen that kind of headset before, or maybe because it CAUSED HER TO BE TRANSPORTED INTO A DIGITAL WORLD.

@@jacobwansleeben3364 possibly, we'll just have to wait and see, I'm excited for episode 3

Bubble doesn't have a censor bar because you can't read their lips like you could with Pomni. Zooble didn't have a censor bar on their face when they said f**k off in the first episode, but one was put over their finger.

The censors differ more than just visually.
@murkysaltwater36466 ай бұрын
Bubble also wasn’t censored because it wasn’t just a bunch of swear words, likely just a long sentence of something super gross

The middle finger would have also been censored off if another character flipped the bird I would imagine.

I love the fact that 25:13 minutes into the video which is the length of the second episode he is still less than three minutes in

38:43 this is actually a reference to pizza tower, one of his poses is even one of peppinos taunts in the game
