Important thing to note for potential theories, Gooseworx, the creator, confirmed that Caine isn’t actually evil. He’s an AI program that doesn’t fully understand humans. Presumably, he does actually want to make them happy by creating these adventures to ensure they don’t go insane, and even creating an “exit” like they’ve been asking for, although he probably doesn’t even know how to let them actually leave. Also, it’s been stated multiple times outside the show that these characters indeed were humans.

Caine isn't evil and specifically seems to be only interested in "taking care" of the humans who show up in his realm, which for me very much implies an unseen third party is pulling the strings behind the scenes to trap people here.

I've read this theory somewhere: Kinger has been trapped the longest because he was a Developer, and his obsession for an "insect collection" is because he got trapped while looking for bugs in the game. I personally think that Jax antagonistic attitude, the fact that he has "keys to everyone's room" and his extra knowledge is because he was some sort of hacker before being trapped

This!! One of the things that crossed my mind was how Jax having "unauthorized" access to everyone's rooms is much like a hacker having unauthorized access to different parts of a network. Plus, Jax's name (either coincidentally or intentionally) rhymes with "hax", a slang term that refers to cheating in a video game by either using external tools or "hacking" the game to gain an unfair advantage. In this case, Jax has unfair access to the living quarters, whereas everybody else is limited to only being able to freely access *_THEIR_* designated room.

And I am a bit shocked that Matpat, as a theater kid, did not see the Comedy and Tragedy masks of Gangle and that depictions of the two masks are often drawn with a red ribbon wrapped around them.

This also reminds me of the "Teapot hypothesis", which is the hypothesis where there's a teapot in orbit around the sun. The point of this concept is that there's no way to disprove it, because the teapot is too small to observe with present-day telescopes, and so the 'burden of proof' should always lie with the person who proposed the hypothesis in the first place.

An important thing to note about Kinger and Queenie - the King in chess is a relatively weak piece, despite his obvious importance to the game. I wonder is his “insanity” is partly caused by the fact his Queen piece is gone. The Queen is the strongest piece in the game and is there to protect the King. Without her, the King can do very little to protect himself.

I know it's early to tell, but I'm thinking he's built specifically to "help" the player, which is why he's so nice and helpful, but the game was made as a trap, so it's outside his designated control to let players out of the game. My theory around Jax is that he's collecting keys because he's trying to escape. He's hoping one of the keys will get him out. As for knowing her biggest fear. I think it's a reach that he's higher power in this world. Most likely she just told him somewhere down the line. I think the line was a throw away to give off the friendship vibe. That they have been there so long that he knows things about her that only friends would know. We can also probably deduce that Jax came here before Ragatha. So maybe he talked to her to calm her down and somehow they talked about fears

Gooseworx, creator of the show, has said that Caine is not evil. While the rest of the main cast (minus Bubble) are humans, Caine is an AI, and doesn’t understand humans all that well. He tries his best, but sometimes his good intentions have bad executions. As for the X-ed out Queen chess piece, all Gooseworx has given us is that her name is Queenie. Jax didn’t teleport. It was the classic “character runs so fast they leave a cloud behind that’s shaped like them,” cliche.

Caine isn't as evil as everyone is thinking, imo. he's doing his best to keep his characters sane with the adventures, and I don't think he quite understands what they mean by "exit" or why they'd want to leave. When he's talking about the exit, he says he knows everyone's been wanting one, but he didn't know what to put on the other side, which shows he might not truly understand that they're trying to leave the circus entirely. he heard them talking about an exit, and did his best to make one. I don't think he's as bad as we're being led onto believe.

Have you noticed how the abstracted characters are characters who are similar to the current cast? maybe, whenever a character is abstracted, the character design is used as a way to "remake" that cast member in particular. It might be in the form of a clown, chess piece, ribbon mask, doll, anthropomorphic humanoid, and a miscellaneous character in terms of zooble.

In the hallway, when you see all of the previous characters that have presumably been abstracted, you can see how they all look like variations of a similar character or a base model. It almost reminds me of games where you can chose a base model and then can chose from like 3 different shirts & hair styles and change the colors. Then, inevitably, most of the characters end up looking pretty similar. It also reminds me of games where in a group, you can only have one of each type of character. Maybe this is why as soon as Kaufmo the clown abstracted, another clown adjacent character (Pomni the jester) joined the game, and she looks similar to another jester/clown character we can see on a door in the hallway?

A prominent theory that has been going around is that Jax has the keys because, although he acts nonchalant, he is secretly trying to find an exit himself. Well considering that most the other characters are pretty goodie two shoes, that doesn't say much. With the exception of maybe Cane, but hes kinda chaotic neutral at this point. Plus Jax does save them. He creates that whole and tosses the bowling ball to quickly force them over it so they would be able to escape. He does this only after he hears Kaufmo roar. He could've easily just saved himself, but he chose not to. He did it quickly and without really panicking them, thus risking them freezing or fighting him on quickly escaping. Again, he could've just save himself.

the last scene is interesting, theres several old folklore stories that basically warn you that you shouldn't accept food when you've been spirited away to another world by fae, because accepting their hospitality leaves you indebted to them and traps you in that world. caine takes her out of the "exit" and immediately gives her a feast, followed by the camera cutting to the "real world" where she is gone if this is his usual reward for adventures, and everyone gets one when they enter, that could be why nobody else was able to find the exit door or maybe im looking too far into it 🤔

I can definitely relate to the extreme caution and fear of escalators. I grew up with my mom telling me that a daughter of someone she knew got her shoe caught at the top of the escalator, fell backwards, and got horribly injured and scraped up by the machine. When it comes to Jax, I believe that a lot of his 'uniqueness' when it comes to him compared to the others, is both a part of how long he's been around, and how he decided to handle being trapped there. He is all about self preservation. Soon as he saw the clown abstracted he was out of there. When he saw a goink that was glitching he knew why cause he knew what happened. He was hiding in the hole and about to spill the reason why when the abstracted clown fell through as he was about to say it. No powers as you say. It's not that deep in this case. I love his sarcasm and he's my favorite character. Also ragatha said he knew she was afraid of bugs. Obviously she told him that during the time they've been there. He's a prankster.

What's really cool is that while this is another instance of "Colorful kid friendly-looking thing actually being dark", it doesn't try to lull you into a false sense of security like most other media. It shows you it's full hand very quickly, wasting no time in letting you know that the whole situation is an existential nightmare. Rather than holding a happy facade and building up to an inevitable "What's the catch", it gets that out of the way right at the start and you get to watch everything and everyone desperately try to sugarcoat it and keep up that facade of everything being fine. You've already seen the horrors, and now you're just left with cheerfulness you already know is fake. It's a lot like returning to Headspace for the first time in Omori. Despite all the smiles and colors, you already know it's just a distraction and that something's very, very wrong, and you're left just... waiting for something to happen.

My biggest take away from the pilot (after watching a few times) was all the eye imagery. Obviously Caine has his eyes everywhere and in paintings, but there's also the Gloink Queen with a lot of eyes, Pomni's eyes changing based on her emotions, Ragatha and Zooble having actual mismatching eyes, Kinger's eyes being very poignant and somewhat off of his body, etc. If it was just associated with Caine, then that's one thing, but the fact that eyes are so prominent throughout the whole episode with multiple characters makes me think it's something else. I don't know what, but I thought it'd be worth pointing out.

One aspect of Caine's design that's interesting is, well, that he has just jaws and eyes for a "face." (I know, how observant of me.) This is something that comes up in glitches where a character's face model doesn't load properly, but their mouth and eyes are still rendered. If Caine is bugged, but got around it by resizing and repositioning his remaining assets, then he might at least be aware something is wrong with him and his environment.

On the topic of color unity with the red and blue, they could be using visual clues to tell us who is more mentally or emotionally stable. To me, it seems that the more mixed the two colors are, the more likely it is that the character in question is fully stable in only one of the two categories. Kinger, for example, may not be mentally stable, but is still emotionally stable, if a bit jumpy. Jax, to me, is not as emotionally stable as he lets on, but is mentally stable. As for the characters whose colors don't mix, I think which color is more prominent might imply which category is worse for one character. Ragatha, for example, has more blue than red. This could indicate that she is more emotionally stable than mentally. Gangle doesn't have any blue on her at all, and it's obvious she's not very emotionally stable. Pomni is equally rocky in both categories, but not completely unstable, and Zooble seems to have more red-skewing colors on them, so they're probably less emotionally stable then their nonchalant attitude implies. You can be fully stable in only one category or partially unstable in one or both and be physically fine, but once you lose yourself and are completely unstable in both, you abstract and transform into the glitchy monster.

Theres a line right at the end (1:22:20) when Jax speaks to Kinger: "Since when are you an expert on the digital world?" This really jumped out to me. It feels like it's foreshadowing that Kinger was somehow involved with the project, having hidden knowledge that he eventually forgot due to insanity. He lost his mind, but bits and pieces of what he used to know are still there. He was the first player to arrive in the digital world, so maybe he was part of the production team making the game, and was the first to test it out? Maybe Kinger and the Queen piece we're the first beta-testers...

Personally I like the theory that every character represents a different trauma response, or unhealthy characteristic. Watching Matpat get suspicious of Jax is really making me re-think him. The ending scene where he says hes starving before being told by Kinger that simply isn’t possible feels like Jax may be real. Its leading me to think Jax is really hungry. He may be leaving and entering the world by the VR headset to observe the test subjects and messes with the other characters knowing they aren’t real like any Game Dev does with their projects. But he is human and does get hungry, needing to leave to do that.

Maybe, but did you see how he reacted to Kaufmau? He was genuinely upset. Then he went and found Kinger and Gangle and got them out of Kaufmau's way. You can see it in sequence. He reassured Kinger that everything was alright, he heard Kaufmau in the distance, then he made everyone move. Sure, how he does things is wrong and rude, but when push comes to shove, he got the others out of danger. That, and this whole story is about survivors who fight to hold on to sanity. Jax is not good, sure, but his actions make a lot more sense if you think of him as a jaded survivor using instant gratification as a coping mechanism

Actually, I think Jax means it literally. He's been trapped in the Digital World for so long he feels like he's starving; just dying to know what eating real food feels like again. Think Cypher from The Matrix, but in reverse. I'd also argue he's similar to Kaufmo in that he's probably slowly losing it while looking for a possible exit. It'd readily explain why he has keys to every door he could find in the Circus, including key to all of the tenants' rooms. He could arguably be looking for the lock to Cain's door, assuming it even exists.

I personally believe than Jax can also see the camera. After delivering the line "she still thinks this is a dream", Jax looks into the camera for a few seconds and then it pans out to show that Ragatha was behind the camera, and then she asks why Jax was looking at her like that. he also looks at the camera in the scene where Pomni throws up, and a few times during the slide scene. he also jumps in and out of frame from the side several times, which I would imagine looks weird from any other angle and he's the only one who refers to what they were doing at the beginning as a "theme song" or people as "characters" or "npc's". also, it's implied that Kaufmo was angry very often or became angry easily, with how Ragatha apologizes profusely for not laughing at his jokes, Gangle being afraid Kaufmo was still mad at her and Jax saying that he's "never seen him this happy before" after he abstracted.

I get the vibe that none of the characters that we see are actually antagonists. Jax seems like he uses comedy as a coping mechanism and lost human empathy from being stuck there for so long. Caine’s line about the exit door “ I didn’t know what to put on the other side…” suggests that he is trying to help but doesn’t know what actually exists outside of the digital plane. The office looks like it was made out of his old jumbled memories (explains the backrooms layout) and his old assets(the dirty computer and VR headset). If he got trapped in the game like everyone else then he probably survived by forgetting that reality existed in the first place (People only go insane when the look for the exit). This theory that Caine got trapped also suggests that the story might be taking place in modern times and the 1990/2000’s setting is Caine stuck in the past.

I don’t know what Caine is, but I would bet he has no control over the doors, like if they are also a glitch he has no way to understand or cover up, and perhaps it is tied to each person’s will to get out. So the less they care about leaving the less they show up, would make sense how a new arrival would see them more often.

Something I noticed is that these characters each hold a type of response to trauma, almost as if they are representing it. Gangle: huge imbalance(s) in her emotions and can’t control them. The mask shattering is a representation of how little it takes for Gangle’s mood to shift. Zooble: prefers to detach from others and is pretty blasé about everything, perhaps as a way to distance herself from it. She still seems to care a little but is overall disconnected. Kinger: seems to have lost his support (the Queen) and has been driven to insanity, possibly to protect himself from any further damage. (There’s a comment somewhere about him being weak since he’s a King without a Queen) Insanity is the mind trying to cope and protect itself, so that may be why he hasn’t abstracted. He’s gone mad in an entirely different way than Kaufmo. Ragatha: literal definition of a people pleaser with underlying anxiety. She’s painfully aware of the situation but hasn’t fully come to terms with it, hence the spiraling. She also focuses more on how Pomni’s first day was ruined over how much pain she’s in as she glitches. She saves it till after she sees Caine, indicating that she’ll always put others before herself, even when it negatively impacts her. Jax: similar to Zooble, though he distances himself differently. Jax stays pretty mean and sarcastic, avoiding any deep feelings. He’s practically hiding behind his constant smirks that are literally forced in place by his teeth being connected. I think Jax knows too much about their current reality and has distanced himself from having connections. He’s one of the more aware people, hence why Ragatha (another very aware character) sticks with him. They also might have a slight codependency due to the type of people they are. (I think jax would feel Ragatha’s loss more than the others. Not shipping but just by their general relationship) Pomni: new/current trauma processing. She goes through spouts of denial and bargaining, trying to avoid the truth that she’s stuck. The office rooms further push that she just can’t leave and this puts her in a flight/freeze position (flight being the more common response for her). I think she’ll have more built off of it since she’s still new to the digital world but she has already developed some forms of trauma response. Sorry this was so long, I hope this makes sense.

Answers to some of your questions - I'm pretty sure that 'two headed ribbon' was just Queenie (the queen chess piece) blurred with the X Jax didn't teleport, he just ran real fast. If you slow it down you can see him running. That game show reference is referencing a game where you get eaten by this, like green blob barbarian caveman thing and go through a gameshow. That's all I got, but hope this helps! What I’m most curious about is the repeated theme of the number 6? Its interesting to note that Caine doesn't seem to be able to create new characters and objects, but new scenarios. any event started without a set character is replaced by the mannequins, Caine literally doesn't know how to finish the exit. he's only worked with what already exists, or puts holes in things that do exist (eg the cellar). There's also evidence of Caine knowing what's in the void, as the restaurant is not a part of the grounds as seen at the beginning. As Pomni is running through the exit at the end we se a C&A logo, which is likely a reference to Caine having a counterpart (like Cain and Abel), which in turn could imply that the counterpart creates the assets for the circus, and Caine uses the assets to create scenarios.

I believe Jax's knowledge and keys are from his own methods of attempted escape. Keys he might've seen or gathered through going about through the adventures, as we can see sometimes Caine doesn't fully remove aspects when he should allowing them to find the broken exit door. I think he is the one most focused on escaping, and he uses his comedic type to slip under Caine's radar so he doesn't get watched/ makes it seem like he's not interested in escaping. I think he's the smartest of them and is analyzing everyone's personalities in order to learn more about the place he's in, as well as any potential ways out. Like he thinks if he can figure out why they were all brought here, maybe he can reverse that in some way to escape. Of course, purely a theory.

Things to note 1. We don't quite know how memory is affected. Names seem to be forgotten but it is not confirmed that they lost all memory, my personal theory being that they remember their life but not any details that make it personal like names, appearances, or other specific details 2. I think the headset being on the table is a presentation choice. There are 3 possible scenarios: 1. They got physically sucked into the game, 2. Their mind is stuck in the game but their bodies are unresponsive, 3. Their minds have been copied and the real them is free (the only theory supported by the presentation of the hardware) 3. Each character has their own acceptance of their scenario: Pomni is in disbelief, Jax has fully accepted it, Ragatha is coping with it, Gangle hasn't had enough screen time, Zooble is indifferent, and Kinger is driven crazy by it. Things to note about Caine 1. He has been stated to not be malicious 2. He is implied to not have hundreds of all seeing eyes because he didn't know what was happening and seemed to be joking about it 3. He is an AI who seems to be trying to keep them from going insane but does not quite understand humans Things to note about Jax 1. He has been stated to cause/be involved in something disastrous 2. He seems to only pull dangerous jokes because he has accepted the reality they are in, they cannot die 3. About Jax being chosen as merch over Ragatta. I think the POV in the episode speaks of who the series creators wants to focus on this early. The moment Pomni splits up with Ragatta, Ragatta goes unseen for the rest of the episode until the conclusion while we switch back and forth between POV following Pomni and Jax (or mostly Jax as it goes to the other group but only when Jax joins them back or is with them) and only once to Cain when it's time to wrap up the episode.

I 100% agree with Matpat on the topic of escalators because as far as I’m concerned if a shoelace makes it under there, my whole body is gonna get sucked in and shredded no matter how physically impossible that is. I also do the shoe polish thing for sure, effectiveness unknown 😂. Flipflops on escalators are also dicey to me

46:35 Jax didn’t teleport. He did that cartoon thing where a character runs off insanely fast, leaving behind a dust cloud shaped like them, which dissipates. Considering how fast he started off at, it makes sense for him to be out of breath in his next appearance. Personally I think you’re overthinking Jax a bit, but there’s a nagging voice in my head telling me you might be onto something.

This is why I love Matpat's content. He takes something we have already seen and goes into context with things we would have never even thought of. We just enjoy all the fun and *dark* stuff that happens, but Matpat is always focused on all the small little interesting facts and it makes everything so much more than what it appears to be.

It's when people selectively notice things that support their beliefs while simultaneously ignoring the things that contradict them. Or it's when people take things that are completely unrelated to what they believe and twist them into things that seem to support those beliefs. That's what confirmation bias is.
