I agree with what someone else had mentioned, the On Cloudflow I believe was the main factor the main factor in my plantar fasciitis I developed. Shoes are such an individual specific issue and its hard to say what will and wont work for someone. But I will say I think the Ons are very comfortable and cushioned, but most models do not have much rigidity (you can bend the shoe in half with almost no effort) and this means not much support for your arch so you will be absorbing that rather than the shoe. After a period of recovery I had switched to New Balances models that had more rigidity and have been running longer mileage with more constancy for over a year now with none of the issues I had when wearing several On models.

Oh man, what a timely video (even though I’m 9 months late). I just developed athlete’s foot, plantar faciitis, tendonitis on top of my foot, also a bunion, all in my left foot. I assume it was a combination of increased distance and worn out shoes as the main culprit. The athletes foot came from the pool. Reduced running, stretches and my new Brooks Ghost 14 will be here tomorrow should help. I just reached olympic distances in all disciplines so I need to stay at those distances for a while.

I struggled with a metatarsal stress fracture all of 2020 on and off and no matter how gradually I built up mileage it kept coming back. Started doing 50% of my runs on grass or gravel and it hasn’t been back in 6 weeks and am back to where I was at the start of 2020! Just got to be really careful with it and run EASY. Also found a way to see if it is a stress fracture here is pulling each individual toe back slightly and if it causes pain then it is a stress fracture in the metatarsal

Thanks for the nice rundown! I had two injuries over the past year and this video was nice to see. Plantar Fasciitis - The temporary sharp stabbing pain in the mornings is real; I thought I could train through since pain went away after walking around in the morning for a few minutes but it definitely prolonged the injury. I had to stop running for about 3 months or so to let it fully heal. The next/current injury is fifth metatarsal fracture after a half marathon. It was sharp pain on the outside midfoot every time I would walk or sometimes even stand. I was just pushing very hard through the race and didn't care much about my form during the race, which I think lead to my injury. I also increased my weekly mileage a bit too fast I think, which served as another trigger.

How about pain at the top of the foot, around the middle area? I just experienced it on the right foot last week thursday, rested it for 5 days but when i ran again last tuesday, there's still some pain and i felt so frustrated as i just walked 5K instead. I can hop on that right foot without pain though. I even continued with weight training last friday and this monday, doing squats, deadlift, walking lunges, box jumps without pain. I did start to try ramping up my activity, doing some speed work the last 2-3 weeks. Just returned to running last June. I plan to rest two weeks at least, and maybe just go cycling, but i'll observe the foot if there'll be some pain especially when off the saddle.

Shoes make all the difference for me. I cannot wear On Cloudflow shoes. After using them for a couple of weeks, not only did I get bone bruises in both feet, I also got a stress fracture in my left foot. What was the issue then? Well my primary landing spot while wearing those shoes just happens to be in-between the "cloud pods". There is zero cushion between the pods. So every single step it was like running in shoes without any outsole, just hard plastic. Total number of miles in the shoes, 37 miles. Sometimes shoes just do not work for you, find what you like and what works for you and stick with them.

I had stubborn plantar fasciitis training for a spring marathon in 2018. Then, I changed my shoes, started rotating pairs and added variety to my running routes and terrain. I recovered fairly quickly and haven’t had it since, despite training for an additional 3 Marathons after that point.

@@michaelscofield5483 When I wrote the comment and suffered from that plantar fasciitis I started into long distance running. Before that my distances never exceeded 30 kms. Plus, in retrospective I am sure that the plantar fasciitis was a result of a military selection course where I marched with a heavy backpack for several days. It took my p.fasciitis over a year to fully recover from that. In the first weeks of the "issue" I didn't even do any longer runs however I noticed on a long run that, after some time, the pain was gone. But it returned as soon as I sat back and relaxed from that test run. So I realized that specific running doesn't really cause more harm. From mid 2021 until last week I ran thousands of kilometers in total and many ultras and I am more or less pain-free. The p.f. sometimes reminds me of being alive but it's nothing serious. And I never strech 😄 Interestingly, considering your comment , I had to exit another army selection course today morning because I couldn't barely walk anymore due to horrific pain with my p.fasciitis on both legs. Again, it was the heavy backpack and gear in combination with days of marching through difficult terrain. It's frustrating. However I now know that I don't face problems when running ultra distances but only when marching/hiking for hours/days with heavy equipment. My advice, identify and avoid triggers but don't dispense on sport. Good luck

I don't run that often (like once every week but not that much), i usually wear crocs and after just 1 minute of jogging, i get like a minor pain around my ankles even though it doesn't have any injury. Is it because I dont run often? And if I slow down, the pain goes away, but it comes back everytime I try to jog.

I think it would have been relevant to mention the other school of thoughts regarding footwares - barefoot or minimalist footware. There are definitely research that hint at the fact that some foot injuries may actually be cause by weak foot structures, to which to MUCH support for the foot all the time seems to be contributing. Anecdotal, but that seems to be my case personally - I had been running in stuff like the Gel Cumulus for years and tended to hav regular issues popping on & going away.... I switched to more moderate level of support, and included a portion of minimalist shoes and barefoot running (~1/4 of my volume, at recovery/endurance paces). After a year stopped having any issues. After all, if part of the remedy is going to be strenghtening anyways (e.g. calf raises & such), then... wouldn't the logical conclusion be to try to include some of that strenghtening directly in the run, as opposed to try to remove even more of it with orthopedics/cushionned shoes?
@Unthwartable
@Unthwartable 3 жыл бұрын
Another bit of anecdotal evidence to help your point. I started out in maximal shoes (asics beast 11 or something?) because of my bad running form, I suffered through 6 months of plantar fasciitis only 3 months of running and 3 months to recover. I switched to minimal shoes (Xero Shoes) and immediately realized what I was doing wrong. I had to get used to the new form of running.... but then I was getting blisters on the balls of my feet. I've since discovered that I was still overstriding and pulling myself over my foot instead of pushing off of my foot. No one told me that running should be the same basic action as high speed elliptical. Push back with the glute, keep the hips level, and VERY LITTLE bounce. Lastly, strength training on the go does work long-term, but if you're just getting into running it makes more sense to get your calves/glutes/core(obliques, abs, lower back and hip flexors) up to the task, and then use additional miles to condition them to the specific task of running. I have been running in minimal Xeroshoes (HFS is best, Sandals are good, speedforce is a bit too minimal for me, prio is great and currently running in their boots) for the last 2 years and have had no foot/lower leg injuries. I'm going to be attempting to switch to Maximal shoes again to see if it was the shoe before causing the plantar fasciitis or if it was my bad form. You'll probably never get the result of this test - but it's definitely a thing I'm going to try! Very good advice overall though IogicOnAbstractions

@@Unthwartable Yeah interesting story as well. The point you mention is pretty relevent about making our mistakes in running form more obvious - it's just really hard to land far forward on the heels with minimal shoes. And I think I also "feel" the ground better. I still use more cushionned shoes for heavy trails runs, and if I go for 60 minutes + that being said. Didn't know about Xeroshoes will check them out.
