A big issue that often gets overlooked is the bike fitting. A standard road bike fitting is for riding the bike out of aero. So when you add the aero bars, you run the risk injury or poorer performance due to being displaced from the proper positioning. Example is hip angle. Tri bikes is the opposite. You are fitted to be in aero. Being out of aero will alter your performance
@FootTrafficTri
@FootTrafficTri 3 ай бұрын
Key thing is the ability to still run well off the bike. Even with the saddle lifted and forward on the roadie it will struggle to achieve the seat angle of the tri bike, so hip flexor activity is massively increased. A good way to measure would be to add a ROTB to this test to see how each options perform

The versatility of that Aeroad with aero bars is insane! I think the answer for any Pro or former Pro is pretty much always a TT bike. You should test this same thing with an average age grouper who's not very used to riding on a tri bike - that's where the majority of people are, I feel like.

80% of my distance on a road (gravel) bike, the final 20% and races are on my TT bike. The road bike just has a ton of flexibility for training that a TT bike makes "less fun". However, as you indicated, the ability to tightly integrate race day needs on the TT bike is not to be ignored. The ability to be super comfortable for a 90k+ is not to be ignored.

Just planning a training ride for a tri bike is a pita. Bike lanes are way too often too "curvy", every bump of the road let the bike rattle, and obstacles you can handle with a road bike can throw you in the bushes with a trii bike while in aero position. You are mostly limited to good roads - with all the traffic. I also do most of the outside training on the road bike. The tri is for indoor training and some preparation rides. Yes, it's a shame.

Your position in the Aeroad looks surprisingly good.. Its a test/comparison that I wondered about too, especially since Gustav Edin won the 70.3 worlds on a roadbike in Nice 2019. For the road bike setup a different saddle Like the Ergon that was on the TT bike might have been better. I'm still looking for a elongated saddle that allows for two positions, one for in the drops and one for in the aerobars. For many age groupers its not just a question of which is fastest but also having to own two bikes instead of one. The Aeroad would make a great all year around training bike too..

If the Aeroad had integrated storage and hydration, and enough adjustment for saddle position, I don't see the need for the Speedmax. And add ample tire clearance, and you don't need a gravel bike either. But the way the bike industry is, you can't get all the features you want on ONE bike, as you should be able to.

I love this video because addresses the tabu of people that prefer or has budget only for a road bike or only one bike. Why have 2 bikes if you love riding mountains and train in a hilly area? Regarding the storage issue... I think this has not a lot to do with the road x TT ... I think the manufactures could start doing this adaptation for road too. People that train long and ride long also need to hydrate.... I am not sure why people think road bikers are so much more different than triathletes when it comes to biking. What I missed on the video was addressing the running fatigue....isn't the TT bike changing the sit angle so you use less running muscles? Or if you have a hilly course doesn't really matter what bike your are using in terms of fatigue in the running part?

If anyone watched the TT in the Tour this year they would know that you go with the bike that gives you the most advantage for the longest time. If you are doing Nice and putting out less than 200w, you are going to spend a lot of time climbing those hills and, for most average bike handlers, a lot of time on the brakes coming back down, for the average Triathlete there will be not enough time gained down on the bars on the Tri bike as averse to a aero road bike with bars, to regain the advantage.
@szymonmodelski149

100% agree with the closing thoughts, geometry is essential. Happen to own new aeroroad and speedmax gen 2 (UCI TT), both in M. The top tube length on TT is ca. 5cm more and can be also slammed more. To get that reach on aeroroad one would need to go L with longer stem but that increases stack height. Again going with long reach on aeroroad would result in too aggressive position on the road. If someone rides TT in aggressive/long position it will be hard to reproduce it, less aggressive likely possible. Hilly course certainly gives some edge to aeroroad. Really cool test!!! All in all new aeroroad is a weapon!!!
@nockee
@nockee 2 ай бұрын
But you could convert the Aeroroad to match your TT position for a race if you wanted and then back for normal road riding afterwards? Assuming you’re not in a very aggressive position it sounds like you could. Correct me if I’m wrong. I see this being valuable as I could do 90 percent of my training on the Aeroad in road bike mode but then match the TT position with a little bit of tweaking and not have to buy a separate bike.
@szymonmodelski149
@szymonmodelski149 2 ай бұрын
@@nockee I would not be able to match positions. Seat is way forward to be closer over the crank in TT, crank in TT is shorter. Aerobars reach far forward in TT. It would be a lot of changes. You can get close, likely close enough but compromises are unavoidable. It’s a bit like VW California, not a camper, not a family estate, not huge either, a bit of everything. As for the training I would say that more you train in TT position the better. You want to get used to putting power not being on the hoods. I think depends how crazy you are about efficiency, aero etc. Still aeroroad is nuts! Feels crazy fast, would not mind racing triathlon on it without aero bars 😅

If the course that you are riding is Nice 70.3 or 140.6, a lightweight road bike with clip-ons is definitely faster due to the climbing. I used a Cervelo P4 setup as a lightweight TT bike with Easton carbon bars and a shallow carbon wheelset.

I have had the exact same experience on a long 125km course with several small and one long uphill section with gracious gradients mostly not above 10%. Definitely not hilly but mountainous. I've had similar speeds and wattage with a road bike and a time trial bike. The road bike gained time on the uphills but lost that time on the flat parts. But that was a road bike without aero bars. In your case I am surprised that you have had almost identical times. It probably depends on the steepness of the climb in combination with the weight savings. Personally I kinda prefer the TT bike, even on longer rides. The road bike is fun for courses with steep climbs and winding descends where you need to be handle. But with good fitting a TT bike can be very comfortable and you can absolutely learn to handle the TT bike to be much more nimble than most people would believe it could be.

@@philipteixeira7982 If you getting the Aeroad it will feel like a road bike anyway, albeit a bit more agressive aka you’ll be more bent over. Not really any issue of comfort for me personally, but you have to know whether you can hold such an aggressive position for some time. Might be that your glutes will hurt after a while if they are not trained enough for that position. If you are getting a TT bike like a Speedmax for me personally the comfort isn’t any worse. It’s a different position but for me different doesn’t mean worse for comfort. The only thing is that in a TT position my bib shorts legs always slide up over time and build up in the crotch area. The extra fabric between your legs can then cause some chafing. If you only ride 30km that won’t be an issue. Either use creme there or pull the shorts down again from time to time. Also I had saddle sores when the saddle was too soft. Changed it to a stiffer one.

I see a lot of TERRIBLE aero positions with clip-ons. Aero bars are only useful if you can maintain the aero position for a long time. I rode a road-bike conversion for a few years and set it up with a forward seatpost. When I got my TT bike I just copied my stack/reach for the same position, but what a difference it was riding a bike designed to be in that position. Although my position was identical, I was much more comfortable as higher speeds and could hold an aero position for longer times (making it faster).

While I really love this kind of content, I think always doing these comparisons on top tier bikes, the results might be quite skewed compared to what the general consumerbase might experience. I personally think the advantages/disadvantages between the two types of bikes really diminish when you use electronic groupsets. I would think the timegap between the two bikes would be marginally higher if the bikes were equipped with mechanical groupsets - even if everything else was the same. On the flats the TT bike might be even faster and vice versa in the hills for the road bike, because they only have one set of shifters each. I quickly upgraded my TT bike to electronic groupset to get that extra set of shifters on the basebar - it makes the climbs and decends much safer and quicker. I even occationally use the TT bike for group rides, as I never have to take my hands off the brakes when riding - something I would never do with a mechanical groupset.

Can you match the same position on both bikes by pushing the saddle west forward? If you can, the only benefit of the TT bikes is the storage. Would be interesting to see a longer flat test comparing them.

What we need is USAC and USA Triathlon to tell the UCI to get bent and allow a broader interpretation of what is a legal TT bike. Athletes should be able to ride their Tri bike without any limitations on USAC sponsored TT's. Increasing participation opportunities in the US will only help road cycling and Triathlon. Many shoe-string budget events are happy to allow anyone to participate on anything (that isn't an e-bike). A formal stance on this topic would be forward thinking indeed.

No, YOU get a tt bike last if that fits your needs. Other people have many different needs. I personally did my first two triathlons on my old 7-speed, aluminum frame, down tube-shifters road bike with aerobars. When I was ready to buy something I got a used TT bike and didn't touch the other bike for anything else except commuting. I used the TT bike for training, group rides, TT races, triathlons long rides... because it was just better than the old bike in every dimension (lighter, more aero, bigger gearing range). Yes, you need to politely ask if the group would accept you with a TT bike. Some do, some don't. Then I got interested in Gran Fondos and going to group rides that do pace lines so I got a road bike. But that was LAST for me. For other people, I do see cases where they could benefit from going directly from an urban bike to a TT bike: people that is interested in triathlons, rides alone or with other triathletes most of the time and is flexible enough. Go for it. It doesn't matter the fitness level. I've heard people saying that TT bike are only for faster people or longer distances. I disagree: if you want to be competitive in your age group a basic TT bike will be faster than a road bike in most courses

@@Shane_Finnegan I got a Cervelo P3 2010 with 50mm wheels for $1500. I don't regret it. I had the option to buy a Shiv with DI2 and box section wheels circa 2020 for $2000. It would have been a nice option as well but I'm convinced it would have been slower because of the wheels. The things that I feel outdated in the P3 are the width of the wheels (I use 23mm tires but those wheels probably work best with 21mm the frame won't let me use anything bigger than 25mm). The conventional head tube with round spacers (round tube creates drag; I put a bento box behind it to clean airflow, newer bikes have better solutions). It lacks attachments for storage or integrated storage. It has no integrated hydration and adding a round bottle in frame probably is bad for aero (I use bottle in aerobars and behind me, added the bottle in frame for a 70.3). It is 10 speed mechanical, if you are really picky about your cadence and power you can get in situations where you are in between gears and it has cables which are bad for aero. If you see that list, those are minor things, and even a newer road bike can have them. I can go 37km/h on the flat with 180W, 34km/h with 150W. Those are really good numbers in my opinion. In your case, you can go really expensive on a new road bike and then you need to spend on aerobars. And then maybe the geometry is not ideal...

Have Ironman wales this weekend. It’s a hilly course and it looks like rain. I’m taking the previous gen Aeroad and not the P3, because handling is so much better.

You can probably get third party mounts or a different saddle that is compatible with bottle mounts, but it's probably not as nicely integrated or aero as the Speedmax options

I can’t find an angle adjuster for the tri bars for the aeroad. Anyone knows where to look? It should be the same as the speedmax and in this movie ist is angled

A few weeks ago, GTN explained us, that a Tri-Bike has a such good geometry, so you are more Aero, and at the same time more relaxed for the run. Now, Canyon has its playbook and GTN is the best partner. Congrats Canyon for your marketing-strategy and sorry GTN for beiing manipulated... or "payed"

yes, I did... stick on my opinion. I am fan of Canyon, own(ed) more than 5 (Aerod, Ultimate and Endurance). But a "global" Channel should be more independent. 10 Min Commercial, not much value - everything in the video has been explained before in other videos many times. But a good platform for Canyon.

On 18 May 2023 this channel ran exactly the same video with exactly the same content with almost exactly the same title with the same thumbnail of some guy pulling a stupid face… bloody hell GTN, start coming up with some original material or just back off the frequency. The more you regurgitate the same old crap, the less authoritative you become. BTW - no you don’t need a TT bike, unless you want the chance to win, in which case of course you need a proper TT bike. It is like asking if you really need an F1 car to win a Grand Prix.

Completely different bikes, different course discussed, different outcomes. The video in May is filmed in a set for starters, very much focussed on the differences between the bikes for an entry level triathlete. I’m a little puzzled by your F1 argument. Take a watch of the video 😊

Hello everyone. I've stopped subscribing to you because you keep advertising Canyon bikes, even though you know exactly what a nasty game Canyon plays with its customers: Fake availability, collect money and then delay delivery over and over again with many, many excuses. The bikes shown in your videos are usually not available for years. I myself waited 18 months until “my” Speedmax was finally advertised as available in three weeks on their website. Just another lie, of course, as it turned out the day after I paid.

Testing a Road bike compared to Triathlon bike should NOT include aero bars on the road bike. This video should be called "How close can we match a TT bike?"

With how easily you can mount aero bars on all round and at least some flat/aero road bike handlebars, why leave them out?
@marc1299

The point is that most people have 2 bikes. This video shows that actually unless you are an elite age grouper (doing a 70.3 in sub 4 hours 30 mins), and you like road cycling then you are better off buying a roadie which you will use for most of your training, and if you want to go on a biking holiday to the Alps (or similar) you can still take your kick ass road bike with you without the aero bars on. Instead of buying two top of the range bikes, why not get the roadie, and use the spare cash from not buying the TT bike, for a proper disc wheel that you put on your road bike along with the aero bars when you do a triathlon. Takes up less space at home and is going to be mere second slower and thousands of dollars cheaper.
