Could never remember the name of the show these 40 years since but saw Vincent Gardenia in another article and i remembered he was the Dad in the show. Thank you for posting this a 42 year mystery solved at last (:

Thanks for uploading this. I never knew there was a tv series. The movie was and is a favorite of mine - I eventually had a custom racing bike made in the early 80's and began to race because of this movie. A couple other connections that I have with this are that I grew up in Kokomo, Indiana (where the race in this pilot fictitiously took place) and I paid for my bike ($1400.00 in 1983 while beginning high school) through delivering papers. LOLThanks again for uploading. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series!

Isn’t it wonderful, how many of us got into bicycle racing because of this movie. I grew up in a similar town in Canada… An agriculture town. I was the only one who raced bicycles and everyone used to make fun of the cycling and gear. Lol. I eventually raced in France and Belgium… did pretty well. Learned to languages and a shit ton of culture.

Oh man! I loved the movie (I was 19 when it came out, so it particularly resonated with me), but I never knew there had been a TV series based on it. Which included some of the original actors. It's a shame that this never made it as a TV series---if they would have stuck with it, it could have been a classic. Thanks so much for posting this!

His bike in this TV pilot is a crappy "Huffy 12" ; what you might buy at K-Mart...hilarious ! In the movie, Dave rode a Masi frameset which was a decent Italian manufacturer at that time.
@venendarkomenk87164 жыл бұрын
I think it's because the series is set as prequel to the movie, so Dave haven't won the Masi bike
@jasoncolquhoun352 жыл бұрын
Kind of interesting… I recently found an article online about a guy who did an exact replica rebuild of the Masi bike… it was a MASI Grand Criterium, and was actually built in the United States near San Marcos California. MASI had made some kind of deal with an American bike distributor to manufacture the bikes in United States for the growing cycling market. Dave’s bike in the movie would have been manufactured around 1976 or so, and had full Campagnolo Record. I love the movie. I am a helicopter pilot now, and just a couple weeks ago flew one of our helicopters out to Indiana from Denver. I stopped for fuel in Bloomington and went and flew a couple laps of the old quarry at Sanders Quarry. The locals called it rooftop quarry, and sadly 3/4 of it is filled in now due to a bunch of local bullshit. The area where the guys jumped off of that rock that stuck out into the water is still there, but it looks as though they bulldoze that rock diving board into the water. I was heartbroken.
@mjbachman3027 Жыл бұрын
He would in all likelihood have had a less expensive French racing bike with Reynolds 531 double butted tubing, like a used Peugeot PX-10, Mercier 300 or a Gitane Tour de France prior to getting the red Masi.

This is the second version of the pilot, the one when the series was syndicated and reran on A&E. The original version that ran on ABC was scored differently, and had no bouncy opening theme. The two versions differed in content as well: the new version cut out some scenes from the original pilot but added other scenes that didn't make the original cut. With all the changes they had to do a new score so they hired Dominic Frontiere to rescore the episode hence the new theme never heard again after this episode. (Of course it could've been the other way around, this was the original version and the one that aired was the revamped one. Which came first the chicken or the egg?)

l Loved this show back when. Looked for it online on and off for years, finally gave up, and now years later I tried again and Bam, all episodes posted. Big thanks to the poster. I was so bummed when this was cancelled. I remember they staggered episodes, played on various day's, skipped airing for weeks at a time, and so it never got much of a chance to gain any footing. It was fun watching again. I think it was felt that Dave's RPM on the bike should be as high as possible to suggest speed, so he was usually way off on the gears, but I can forgive that. Kind of funny watching now. The real crime was the characters were all starting to blossom in the last few episodes, it was really opening up some interesting avenues for later episodes, then it was gone. R.I.P Dominic (that's from memory, hope I got it right). She was a great actress, and seemed on her way to a brilliant career.

Yeah. He was also the only one to star in all three Bad Bears movies (in decreasing quality). He has since said that he regrets not being more selective but said yes to everything because it paid the bills. It worked against him however; his name was associated with so many dismal productions that it brought down his star value which prevented him from getting further work. Anyway, he made a big comeback and seems to be back in demand. He is a very talented actor.

I forgot they even made a tv series out of this? I don't remember if this was suppose to take place after the movie of before. If after that's kind of stupid cuz you'd figure they all mature and grow up and seek a new life then continue to hang around the same area. If they made it a prequel then that make more sense. But without the original cast you knew it would flop. Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern we know how they ended up. good choice not to stay.

More people loved this short series , sorry you didn't think so . Maybe watching it on tv as a kid when it first aired would of been the difference
@BacknMetro8 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason it didn't gain that much traction was because it didn't fit neatly into a particular niche. It's too sophisticated for pre teens. Too serious for teenagers. And ironically because it's mainly about teenagers, adults dismissed it thinking it's geared towards teens! Throw in the fact, the constant comparisons viewers had between this series & the movie (which was brilliant). I recall at the time, I kept missing Dennis Christopher.
