The missions that made me wait... instead of, say, just starting the other cars at locations they were at the 0 mark...used to do my nut in. I mean could start the mission with the Merc SLR, then go on a 2 week vacation, come home & still have a few seconds to get ready before it was time to drive lol

Well, the time difference of you waiting between the two versions is the reason. In NTSC, you wait for 123 seconds, while in PAL, you just wait for 115 seconds.

There was one mission on PAL version, on Trial Mountain, the overtaking one. You gotta overtake the car into the corner where it's a tunnel, the first tunnel that is just 10-15 seconds or so after the starting line. PAL version has something weird, the car on NTSC is like 30m closer than the PAL one, you literally have to smash into the car to win, it's not physically possible.

this game claimed to run "full hd" at the time, but it only ran at 576 pixels horizontally and 960 INTERLACED lines during races. that's worse than 480p at only an effective 576x480 resolution. dunno why i decided to post this :O

NTSC has 123 second waiting time, PAL only 115 second, so that 8 second is the gap from the final straight line to the 2nd final corner

So this is the PAL version, right? I watched the NTSC version that you posted in the comments and noticed a 9 second starting difference(115 seconds as opposed to 124). Is this true, cause I've played the NTSC version years ago and remember it being that way. And what about the NTSC-J version?

The time is wrong he start race in 1'55.000 but in game you start in 2'03.000

NTSC-U and J copies has a wait time of 126 seconds in Total. PAL copies has a shorter waiting time, not to mention better handling characteristics compared to NTSC-J.
