Yesterday was setsubun in Japan. Setsubun in Japanese culture celebrates the coming of spring. There are certain traditions that are very popoular in Japan for setsubun. One of these is the visiting of an "oni" (an ogre or demon) and the act of having children throw beans at the ogre in order to scare him away. Another tradition is to cook a large sushi roll and eat the entire roll without eating while looking at an "auspicious direction" (south--southeast this year).
