Japanese people are impressed if a foreigner speaks Japanese, but foreigners laugh if they can't speak English. What is this fundamental difference?

We think that they are doing an amazing job with the English skills they have understanding these difficult expressions, but playing the telephone game in ANY language is fun to watch in general which is why we found this so entertaining. Because it is a game to be played by them in a language that they are not native in, it adds a new level of difficulty. :) You have a great point. There is no difference. Japanese people are extremely kind when a foreigner speaks even just a little Japanese, but foreigners are not always so kind when non-natives don't speak perfect English. This is of course not everyone but something that should change. Learning a language is extremely hard!
