WARNING: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS VIDEO FEATURES FOOTAGE OF HUNTING AND DISCUSSION OF HUNTING-RELATED TOPICS. I had to call the cops to the farm last night because we had illegal hound hunters raiding our farm. Luckily Toby Dog (our livestock guardian dog) saved the day and gave me a chance to confront them.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

That sounds like good way to get your neighbor to throw poison over the fence for your animals or vandalize your home. You can't trust people not to escalate a situation to dangerous degree if they feel you "slighted" them in some miniscule way.
@MintBiscuits
@MintBiscuits 2 жыл бұрын
Morgan already chased these people off his property so if they are going to poison his animals b/c they got their feeling hurt then they will do so - they won't wait till after he has a conversation with his neighbor. The "slight" has already taken place. Fear of retaliation is not grounds for Morgan to say nothing when people are trespassing on his property OR for finding ways to address the problem. As someone from rural farm country it's quite common to go talk to your neighbor if there are issues rather than calling the cops first - especially if someone is using a family connection to justify their actions. Not doing anything due to fear of retaliation also just invites the trespassing to continue again and again. If people have decided they are going to mess with you they will mess with you, but that should not stop a person from righting a wrong.

yes definitely!! and had his farm not been fenced off, I'm pretty sure those hunting dogs would have taken out a bird or two (if he still has some ducks out or something especially)! Toby would have tried to protect them, but if there were multiple he could have gotten hurt badly (im worried for pablo and the other cats too)! I'm so glad nothing bad happened and no-one was hurt, but these people definitely did not get the hint and I feel like they might be doing this again near or on your land D:

@@jamescanjuggle In my experience, there lots of wiggle room for trespass if the land in question isn’t posted or isn’t properly posted. All that ends though, when the landowner tells you to leave. You have to read the laws for trespass and hunting and animals. I’m in VA, and I think that I recall that hunters can retrieve their dogs, but should try to get permission. To me, this seems to encourage bad actors who use their dogs as an excuse to go wherever they want, but anyway, one should ALWAYS read the laws and ordinances for the state and local area.

I grew up on my grandparents full working ranch and vividly remember being a young child and being woken up suddenly by the ranch hands, cousins, and my grandfather armed up and jumping on the mules and heading out to confront poachers after hearing gunshots. It’s amazing how quickly a livestock guardian dog and a pack of mules can get across a few hundred acres when switched into work mode. No one was ever nice about it when a hunter crossed into cattle territory no matter how far away they thought they were from the barns.

LOL as someone who hunts this is absolutely ridiculous. They were lying out of their butts. If you want to hunt on someone's land, you knock on their door and ask them straight up. If there are "no trespassing" or "no hunting" signs, you don't even ask, you take the loss and leave. That's common courtesy. And even if you've gotten permission beforehand for being on the land, you ask every single time. You never know when someone's out taking a hike or working the land.

In France we have really good laws but hunters still trespass, cut the fences, damage properties (gun shells everywhere, rest of their lunch and empty beer bottles, etc..), shoot in direction of houses, kill their own dogs, other hunters, hikers or other domestic animals all the time. @@rich7331 use of leashes are mostly due to a lot of cars and respect for other people, actually. I find that the vast majority of dogs in cities are actually better trained because they interact with so many more people, and so their owners are careful to make sure they don't jump on strangers, steal food from outdoor restaurant tables, or pull hard on the leash and drag themselves and the owner into traffic. They might not be able to hunt/herd/guard anything, but that's because people on the city don't need them to because they're just pets! The only kinds working dogs you find in a city tend to be police and service dogs. Many people could walk their dogs without a leash without trouble, but it's against the law and disrespectful to anyone who might not like/is afraid of strange dogs. And people are unable to train and control their dogs anywhere! As a former Vermonter, we had 3 dogs, but never hunted with them. However, WE ALWAYS HAD CONTROL OVER OUR DOGS. We lived on a remote mountain, 24 acres & 1,000' driveway, with 5,000 acres of state forest behind us. Our dogs always ran loose together. One evening I suddenly heard our massive, Belgian Shepherd (220#) start sounding the alarm. Knowing it was hunting season, as we are also hunters, I ran out of our house and headed in the direction of Zeus's growling and barking. When I came upon him, I yelled "Hey" to alert the hunters. They were being kept at bay by Zeus, but had their rifles in a somewhat protective position. I told them they were on a private residence with children present and to please shoulder their arms, and I would call the dog off. They did so, and I told Zeus to "come". He immediately quieted, went off guard and came to me. Keep in mind this is a dog I rescued as a repeat escape artist from a shelter -- basically a "throw away" from his previous breeders -- who had no training, and we never formally trained him but just let him know what was acceptable and what wasn't through praise/reward system. I escorted the hunters to our driveway, thanked them for not shooting Zeus, and advised them to keep in mind that many residences are tucked into remote areas of the mountains. Luckily for them, they didn't wander to my neighbors place to the north. They have wolf hybrids that are the size of small ponies...lol. Thankfully our encounter was relatively peaceful.

I have had similar problems with locals who feel that they have the right to hunt on my property without permission. They have torn down my signs and broken my cameras and I have had the police out but never have caught them. I had a Constable who recently stepped up to help me curtail these problems and he taught me the following (this is for Pennsylvania, but it might be similar in other states): 1. If you mark trees, rocks, and posts with purple spray paint lines (a vertical 1" line that is no lower than 3 feet from the ground and no taller that 5') you only have to spray them less than 100 feet apart ~ then you do not need to hang signs. 2. A hunter may enter your property to retrieve a hunting dog but, they must not be armed while doing so. 3. In Pennsylvania, the act of anyone who enters your property without observing the above rules, is considered defiant trespass and is punishable by up to a year in jail and $2,500 in fines. And if trespassing occurs while hunting, additional game-law violations - and additional penalties - also might apply. If you contact the Game Commission as well, they have far reaching authority to investigate trespassing complaints and enforce trespassing violations as a primary offense, even if game-law violations aren’t alleged and the agency will enforce trespassing aggressively. I truly hope that this information helps someone because this sort of thing is incredibly scary and frustrating.

On that note, I do know hound dogs can go miles away from their owner so without the GPS it is hard to get your dogs back and you can lose them. The only thing that I feel is absolutely foolish there is that they're allowed to go on private property and that the owner has to post around their property that there's no hunting. We've had similar laws in Louisiana. A coon dog, deer dog, etc... come on your property that is posted 'no trespassing' or 'no hunting' then you can legally shoot the dogs to protect your family or your livestock. This is not just a law, but it's common sense to keep your dogs off of private property.

There was definitely something 'special' about Toby's bark. My cat was lying on his bed, snoozing, but he snapped to attention when Toby started barking and looked over at my computer. Toby must have been saying something about "outside" because the cat immediately turned and looked out the window. He calmed down when you started talking again.
@kennyholmes5196
@kennyholmes5196 2 жыл бұрын
As best I can parse the barking, based on the context of how there was another dog busy hunting in the area and how Toby was trying to protect his Bird-family, it was probably something along the lines of warning barks that translate roughly to "Danger(ground-based threat) outside(metal barrier)(close proximity), leave now or trouble happens!". If your cat's been around dogs long enough, and you live somewhere in New England, then your cat's probably picked up on the same "dialect" of Wolf-speech that Toby uses, and was able to get the approximate idea. Humans aren't the only animals that talk to each other, after all.

My farm dog will walk the perimeter of my property and not cross the fence, even if enticed by my elderly and truly awesome neighbor who showers her in treats and freezer venison. When we hunt with her, she won't leave my side, lays down when I shoulder my firearm (to stay out of the way), and doesn't even break until told. If I say any command its immediately respected, I really don't see how a hunting dog could be trusted any other way. If my dog killed even a squirrel out of season, while she has her hunting license on her vest, my behind is poacher toast, but there they just run them rampant and hope for the best, I'm stunned

There's actually case law in Vermont that makes it very clear that the requirement to update yearly and update the clerk is "overly burdensome and onerous"; the state's appellate court found and has held several times that simply posting the property is enough, and the yearly dating and registering is superfluous.
