About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I'm really just struck again by your commitment to working with Abby and training her to be a good bird guard dog. She definitely lacks a certain temperament and aptitude, but that hasn't stopped you from working with her and trying to mould her into a good worker. It's really nice to see
@CarolReidCA
@CarolReidCA Жыл бұрын
Abby is still young. She's a puppy, and puppies require work. She still has her puppy energy. I think she'll work out to be an excellent working dog. She seems to simply need the consistent training Morgan is giving her, and she'll be an excellent farm dog. Her energy is a good thing, as when there is a threat, she'll have the energy and enthusiasm to take care of business. Higher energy dogs take more work to train, but when you direct her energies in the right direction, they ultimately make the best farm dogs and will do the work for you. She is a very smart dog. She pays attention to everything around her and to what Morgan does with her. Sure, she plays too, but that's because she's a puppy, and in part her personality. She's different than Toby, that she's female, and that she has different interests and is younger, too. She's quite an amazing young dog. 😍 She's come a long way, and she's still learning. Teaching dogs problem-solving skills is far better than only commands. As Morgan said, you have to teach them not just to follow commands but also why they need to do what you want them to do. Animals are FAR more intelligent than most people give them credit. Talking to them, as if they are children, and from a very young age makes a HUGE difference in their successes as they get older. I always think it's interesting when a human gets hurt, and a dog will go to get help from another human, and people are surprised. Socialization, training, "conversations" (talking to them), and love between you and them go a VERY long way to these incidents. They are far more common than many people think).

@@GoldShawFarm It's comical her breeder demonizes you when to be very blunt on many other farms Abby would've been kicked to the curb / dumped on the side of the road or sent to a kill shelter. I've watched since she joined & majority she shows limited value as a LGD & I say that from a family who has kept LGDs (sheep & cattle) for 70 years. As a family pet she's okay. And I say that because personality wise alone - forget the health - if she was a properly bred LGD she should act like Toby not be so clingy to you. And this is a growing trend with LGD breeds. "Breeders" breeding animals that legitimate working line breeders would spay/neuter rather than let reproduce (based on personality alone) and selling them to people/families looking for something more "exotic" than a Border Collie or a German Shepherd (that'll explain the number of puppies for you).
@GoldShawFarm
@GoldShawFarm Жыл бұрын
@@gingerbaker4579 I agree that the “house dogging” of working breeds is a real problem. And yeah, Abby is a bit more of a companion than I would like for an LGD. That was core reason I had her spayed. Of course, all that said, I absolutely love that dog.

An air mattress outside is asking for it to be flat in the morning. Foam would be better at that point, or even natural material like loam and pine branches. Also, anyone who's spent time overnight outdoors knows you want more between you and the ground/ air than your bag/ blanket... and an air mattress would condense with the cold and be a heat sink.

Getting to know one's self honestly helps one to make adaptive changes more easily. A rare number of individuals don't need help doing this, then there are the rest of us. A good therapist is a good guide. I wish Morgan much success on his life's journey. The US federal law requires any physician to tell the reader when any medical information is given, this information does not make a doctor/patient relationship.

All these stars in the sky, it's so beautiful! These days the Canada Geese fly over our town by the hundreds. It's like we're a resting station. In the morning they fly East to find the fields and spend the day feeding and resting. At around 7pm they fly in the other direction to get to the lakes where they all gather and sleep for the night. There are so many of them that we can hear the gazoos even if they're miles away. In a few days they will all be gone to a warmer region, probably somewhere in the US.

I’m not part of your farming community, I don’t know anything about farming or livestock, but I do really love to watch your channel Morgan! 👍

Toby is so mature but Abby will get there, just grow up some. Toby is a good teacher. Maybe next time put a sheet on top of the hay!! Definitely spend a night each month or so with the furrbabies! ❤🤗🐾

That higher pitched bark seems to mean something is definitely spotted and very concerning. I taught my Akbash dog “show me” which is look at the thing that’s bothering you and bark, helps me try to spot the critters, but most of the time it seems like she’s barking at ghosts 😅

I would love to see a documentary about your farm, Morgan. I imagine it would be called 'The little farm that could." Although you do a great job of showing us all what day to day life is like on the farm. I bet we would find out all kind of things about you that would surprise us. You are such a sweetie, very thoughtful and caring with the animals on your farm. But you can be very stubborn and persistent as well. You remind me of my late and sweet little Chihuahua, Paco. He was the snuggliest little creature ever, but it did not matter what you would say to him or how serious you were when telling him to stop barking. He would still come out with that quiet little "Buff" just to have his say. Just like you when dealing with the bear thing. Kudos for you for getting your 'Buff' out there and not backing down. You're a great farmer.

Thank you for being open & honest enough for a person who seems to have it all together to admit that even you need therapy some times. It makes me feel less ashamed to admit I need help sometime.
