And this matters how? I can understand if he'd performed a service of some kind, but he isn't. Would you go up to a military person and thank him/her for just being there? Of course not. He neither expects or asks for a thank you. At the very least, all that he can expect is for them to be polite to him and the horse. Anything else is simply icing on the cake.

We had a horse years ago named Firecracker. She was born on the 4th of July. Yes I am american. She knew the difference between adults and children. Put an adult on her back and she wanted to go and have fun, but put a child or toddler on her back she was so gentle with them even in the saddle. You need to know your horse and how they respond. Some horses love kids and are instinctively gentle.

Good on the guard for encouraging the young one to come up. I'm constantly astonished the amount of people don't use the wide angle lens or turn their phone sideways to get a wide angle shot. This way they don't have to be concerned about interfering with the guard or horse and still include them. I guess instructions are too difficult to read nowadays,...but then again, there's always YT.

It's usually okay to touch the horse, though you should indicate your intention first and if the Guard demures, leave it. But never, ever touch the harness. Apart from being rude, these are not using ordinary bits, they're using a sort of Pelham. That's considered severe and you can easily hurt the horse with one. The sentries are right to stop people yanking on them.

Please remember that these are high blood horses and no horse likes to stand still with a mounted rider, for more than a few moments. When they're moving, the load is shifted between muscle groups so it's much easier, they can do that all day. That's why they get fidgety. You'll see the Guardsmen occasionally walking them forward a few paces then back into the arch. It just gives the horse some relief. They used to be changed every hour because of this.

That guy is relaxed & confident in the saddle, & the horse feels it. Amazing how they pick up a vibe from the rider. I owned a thoroughbred gelding years ago, he was always relaxed & totally chilled with me, but on one of the very rare occasions I let someone else ride him (my sister in law, who was not a beginner) he sensed some nervousness and awkwardness, & luckily I managed to grab him before he took off with her down the road!
