Emperor becomes Japan's first monarch to give up the throne in two centuries. In a brief ceremony at the imperial palace in Tokyo, Akihito, 85, says his 30-year reign was a 'great blessing' and expresses his hope for the 'peace and happiness of people in Japan and around the world'

The Emperor abdicated because of the Tsunami that destroyed much of northern Japan. He felt that it was his responsibility and realised that he was not young or mobile enough to handle it. All in all, I really liked this Emperor a lot and wish him all the health and happiness.

Very practical for an old emperor or king to abdicate the throne to his successor. That way they will have a young strong leader with sharp mind and will evade the drama, fight and war others monarchies have when their king/emperor dies and different successors start fighting and dividing the empire/kingdom.

Unfortunately that may not happen as the Princess Toshi was passed over in favour of her cousin, Prince Hisahito, who is now 2nd in line. Before he was born, the government were actually considering changing the law. But if Hisahito doesn’t have any sons when he is grown, then the succession will be threatened again

It dates back to the politics of the Meiji Restoration that is why he is wearing western clothing. Japan wanted to be seen as a modern country. He did wear the traditional outfit when he was reporting his abdication to Amarastsu.
