Vimes´s superpowers lays with his connection to raw feelings, or as he calls it the beast. Vimes starts out as a drunk who tries to subdue the beast through alcohol (called Bear huggers). It is the beast that calls out to Vimes and alerts him of the feel of the city and it knows that change is needed. In steps Carrot and in his idealism Vimes learns to trust in that change. Through him love to his wife he learns to control the beast with out alcohol and becomes the powerhouse of the book The Fifth Elephant.

The dame school, is based in working class history, where cities like Bristol, had a huge influx of people, due to land enclosure. Most of the labouring/working classes were functionally illiterate. The working classed realised, that to get jobs and generally improve their selves and their lot, they had to be able to read, write and have basic numeracy...... The dame schools in Bristol, were set up as a means of the working class educating it's self, usually a member of the community who could read and write They also acted as day care for parents going on shift. However, this changed with the introduction of "board schools", during the Victorian era.

I think I write oh I really like this book in all your videos, which you know anyway. Looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the Watch. I agree he definitely changes their ages in retrospect, but then Carrot always seems much older than he is by men at arms he should only be 17 but he always appears more mature. In some respects.

"Fabricati diem, pvnc" does most definitely not mean "for the time being", it means "make my day, punk", a nod to Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry". At least get your facts straight before you sum up a book for people.

Good catch! I'm gutted I didn't pick that up in the edit - I've had a look to see where I got it. I was quite ill and drugged up when I filmed this (no excuse, as I say I should have picked it up in the edit!) but I seem to have misread the Discworld companion - in the section for the watch it says "FABRICATI DIEM PVNC" (for the time being)" reading it today I assume it means that they are going to change the motto, not that that's a translation of the moto. There are a couple of other things I cut out as I didn't quite talk about them right (like the author stand in theory) and plan to cover in later videos. Remember I'm doing this for fun, I'm happy for feedback and will correct this in a later video - but mistakes will happen
