I am retired now but I used to work in the centre of London - when a Guards Band passed it made me very proud to be British. And if I was walking along the street I could not help but fall into step.........I did not spend very long on a parade ground (when I was quite young) but it all comes back to you very quickly.

M Morgan. I remember being told as a young recruit that us civvies would soon be turned into soldiers. 'You'll realise it when amongst those civvies you're the only ones in step'!! It was true lol.

Washington Grays by C.S Grafulla was composed for a the band of 8th Regiment of the New York Militia from the Bronx in 1861. It was very popular with high school bands 50 years ago ( we used to play it from memory). In recent decades it has been played by the US Marine Band at Presidential Inaugurations just before the entrance of the new president and vice president to the platform. Listen for it next January.

The first march was the Washington Grays, a devil of a march to play in concert and even trickier to play on the march. Am gobsmacked -- but then again, these guys are pros. OK, the women too.

How many bears had to die in order for them to have those hats?
@Robinmuk11 ай бұрын
They used to be real bearskins, many years ago, these days they are synthetic. Same with the Leopard skin the bass drummers have over them to protect their uniform from the drum, used to be a real Leopard! Now all synthetic.
@dingusdingus215211 ай бұрын
@@Robinmuk I was just curious how the hats were obtained. I was wondering if there was some official royal bear hunter who went around shooting bears and then skinning them and then leaving the rest of the carcass to rot. I realize this is cynical but humans are capable of such appalling cruelty and stupidity that if I found out that this was actually the case I would not be surprised...
