i think the reaction of Jay's towards the rat illustrates the difference between a fear and an actual phobia. I think most of the people in the video had more or less strong fears (the girl with the fear of ants seemed the closest to a phobia), cause to be fair, they probably wouldn't have agreed to be in this video in the first place lmao but Jay's extreme reaction and complete refusal to even be in the same room as the rat is illustrative of an intense phobia. My mom has a phobia of snakes and she can't even see a picture of one without losing it like that
@honeybutterchips_ Жыл бұрын
I just commented the exact same thing! It’s really unfortunate how the word “phobia” is misused because it’s genuinely harmful to those who really experience it. The way the girl reacted with the rat reminded me of my family member who is deathly afraid of ALL rodents. Most people with phobias don’t even want to look at them on a screen.

I don’t think some of the people had actual phobias mostly just fears bc a phobia is so extreme that they wouldn’t be so open to facing their fears so easily/fast. Especially when the girl was holding the spider and calling it sweetie. She just had a fear. Phobias are so intense it literally would probably take therapy/more time to overcome. Jay definitely has a phobia of rats 😭
@retail_hades Жыл бұрын
What the guessers did with them is what is done in therapy to overcome phobias, tho. It's literally called exposure therapy because what you're looking for is the person being capable of 'going through' their fear. If you go to exposure therapy to get over your phobia, you should be open to face your fear directly, because that's the entire point of the therapy.

Yeah. I'm freaked out by large insects, I don't want to be around them, but I'm not afraid to the extent that it would cause me distress. However, I have an actual phobia of fire. I can't be around flames at all, not even a tiny candle. I get really stressed and anxious about it, I start thinking it'll cause an accident. And it impacts my everyday life, for example, I'm constantly terrified when cooking. That's the difference between a fear and a phobia.

What a lovely video! You couldn't have chosen a better set of three people 😀 They all had charisma with the line-up and handled them so respectfully and it was amazing to see so many people try something that absolutely terrifies them. Beautiful comradery in this video!

I'm so annoyed with my phobia of spiders, I get that they're cool and useful but they just make my skin crawl when I see them. Somehow tarantulas make me feel less weird, like their size and "hairiness" makes them feel more like animals I guess?
@nopenope9118 Жыл бұрын
I’m the same way with spider size. The bigger they are and the fuzzier they are, the less horrifying they are. The only ones that really freak me out are daddy long legs. It’s the tiny body and the long thin legs, it’s just so gross. My roommate is terrified of all spiders so I have to deal with every one that finds its way into our house. I always do the catch them in a cup and release outside method.

Ugh, that's my phobia and it drives me absolutely crazy. It draws such a visceral, deep seated and almost violent disgust from me. It's such an illogical phobia but it is SO real and people just don't understand it when I explain it to them. It's a hard pass for me.
@kimberlyd9755 Жыл бұрын

I feel like the person with the velcro phobia wasn't taken as seriously because no one could relate. Compared to the other phobias, they kept playing with the velcro mid-conversation with them.

another thing about velcro is its very common in people with autism. its a part of sensory overload.
