I grew up in the UAE so I guessed almost all the Filipinos lol. There are soooo many Filipinos there. I'm just shocked how Michael didn't 🤣🤣 But I really like the idea of this video, it highlights how absurd and random the concept of race and ethnicity and political borders is. There's no defining line from one ethnicity to the next anywhere, it's a huge spectrum. Trying to fabricate a line is what leads to conflict. I'm Sudanese but people often mistake me for Ethiopian, Eritrean, Chadian, or even Indian sometimes. I also sometimes can't tell Ethiopians and Eritreans from my own people (unless I try really hard or they have telling signs culture-wise). In the UAE I once got into a taxi and immediately thought the driver was Sudanese so I talked to him in my local language, he was confused 😂 and said he was Ethiopian and thought I was as well. That was a really funny and kind of wholesome encounter.

I'm a Filipino and as one I can say it's pretty hard to spot us solely based on appearance. There's a reason why "halo-halo(literally means mixed-mixed)", a dessert made by mixing a shit ton of ingredients, is popular here. Our country already had dozens of different indigenous people who are pretty different from each other physically (some are inherently short while others are quite tall, skin colors also vary because we have dark skinned (black) natives like the aetas and more fairer and lighter toned tribes like the Igorots and Ifugaos) due to geographical locations in where they are living. Plus, add the plethora of settlers (Spanish, Chinese, American, and Japanese) will create some pretty racially (ethnically) ambiguous looking people.
@arainmiao37812 жыл бұрын
Also generations of immigration and working abroad most definitely added to the diversed appearance too because already ambiguous looking Filipinos/nas breeding with other races are pretty common.

Realistically though you could do this for any large or even small group of countries which have people who look generally similar. Like "guess the South American" or "guess the European". I don't think it becomes inherently controversial when you do it for Asian people, just because of the stereotype that they look similar.
@tiny23152 жыл бұрын
Guess that South American would be the hardest of them all, since south america has peoples mixed or fully european, african, indigenous, east asian, south asian, middle eastern..
@numbernumber252 жыл бұрын
Well I mean if people test these stereotypes with actual people in a research headed mindset, then it could actually benefit by demonstrating if has some truth to it. Also it is an interesting test with human facial recognition and facial traits that may be more common among certain groups that people take notice of more than others with their guesses.
@BoredMarcus2 жыл бұрын
ok, here is the thing, I think Toast is on the wrong track with combining this with 'Asians look alike'. The stereotype never was Japanese look like Chinese and I can't tell them apart. The stereotype is, as an outsider, I can't tell 2 Asian people apart, like if I see them on a photo and then try to recognize them in real life. Most of the time this happens with people of the same nationality. They all look alike, meaning they look similar, so you can't differentiate between individuals, not nationality. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great video, entertaining and actually educating, but for a different reason. Actually showing there are other stereotypes that are wrong for the most part, like nationality and ethnicity supposed to be the same while in reality they aren't.
@numbernumber252 жыл бұрын
@@BoredMarcus You bring up a good point that I almost forgot about. I agree that there needs to be a clarification between nationality and ethnicity. For example the person could have ethnically Japanese, yet been born and raised in China while possessing a Chinese passport. Now this of course is not always the case there will always be people on both ends of this. Although for the video I think that it was clarified for the people that provided their photos that they were focused on ethnicity rather than nationality. In addition to that the stereotype is all Asians look alike, could still work here. I would say that the part about an outsider saying it is not really specific to only them, the difference does not really follow along the outsider it just is often present in people who do not have the body and facial recognition to differentiate asians. This is not exclusive of course to just Asians, it just depends on how much time you spend with a group of people and how long it takes your brain to pick up on facial traits. But yeah the better question for them to ask for this game would be could you correctly identify a person's ethnicity from a photo of them.

When the picture of the girl at 11:00 showed, I immediately started chanting "Filipino" simply because of the fact that I, as a Filipino myself, would recognize those flowers anywhere. I could have been wrong, that flower would most likely exist in other countries, but I let nostalgia guide my guesses ixhsbsjak

I think with how many asian nationalities exist, it's impossible to guess them all. I'm Mexican American. I can't even guess out of the 4 common choices I have, and there are like, 100 Spanish nationalities in total. I don't even speak Spanish good lmao

@@AavalosAndromeda I just got what you meant. Let me explain something it's actually hilarious. I know to use "well" instead of "good" when speaking normally, but when it comes to Spanish, there is a special way to speak English where you know the person is actually Hispanic. I get called out for being gringo a lot, so I use saying things like "speaking Spanish good" because that's the language I grew up with. It tells you I'm the real deal, even if my actual ability to speak...isn't very well or good. I'm just a mess of a person really. I'm not accepted anywhere, and that's fine.

I got 8 right, mostly by taking Toast's advice to guess Filipino when in doubt. Which makes sense because English is very common in the Philippines, so obviously the Asian country where they speak English is going to have more people watching English streamers.

Filipino Race Genetic History: 1. There are native Filipinos that already lived in the island before it was discovered. 2. Our Malay forebearers then came to the island by sea. 3. Chinese people regularly traded and sold goods here in the Philippines before the Spanish colonizers came, and a lot of them even chose to live here permanently. 4. The Spaniards finally came to colonize the country for four centuries. 5. Americans came in too. 6. And finally, Japanese people invaded. So essentially, before globalization, Philippines already had 6 races living in it and intermingling with each other, which means there is really no single Filipino race anymore. Every Filipino person is mixed, and what we define as Filipino nowadays are those who have the heart of a Filipino who embraces their identity.

Ok, us Filipinos are such a wild card. You have a big variety of looks because there's a sizeable number of Filipinos who are mixed, or even a small part Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Indian, Middle Eastern, etc. I think most Filipinos still looks Malay, but even within Malay-looking Filipinos, you still have a variety of skin tone, hair type, eye shape, and features in general. So I don't blame people for mistaking us for other ethnic groups, even Mexican/Latino hehe
