We didn't learn flags in school, only capitals, rivers, mountains etc. I mostly learnt flags from Eurovison, sport events and reading geography books. I also learnt English names for different countries that way.

Honestly it's not the American education system that is to blame but most Americans' egocentric way of thinking. I was never taught flags at school and yet I am able to recognize a fair amount of them. You just need to care a bit more

Exactly! I get so annoyed whenever people, including Americans themselves, blame the entire educational system. You have a responsibility to learn and retain information for yourself. Teachers can't just force you to remember things. Also, I think teaching geography is also kind of difficult? You can tell students to memorize the map and quiz them but if they have no interest in geography then they'll just forget it all after the quiz. Other countries also have the same problem.

They always blame the American system for not teaching them those things, and they are right in part, but I don't know in other countries,in my place, we didn't learn that at school, I think we are just curious and learn that stuff by ourselves. So I think it's not a school thing, it's a culture thing.

5:15 The name of the capital city of the US is Washington. Saying Washington, D.C. is similar to saying Los Angeles, CA or Chicago, IL. D.C. is the name of the area that the city of Washington, the capital city of the US, is in. People just refer to it using DC because of confusion with the state. So answering “Washington” to “What is the capital of the US” is absolutely correct.

Ask people from the US what they're home town is and most of them will follow it with the state, unless their hometown is somewhere massive and internationally known, like LA.

Yeah. The way he corrected her on that annoyed me. As an American, it’s pretty easy to guess that someone who refers to our nation’s capital as simply “Washington” isn’t from a western state. Those from the East or South are most likely to call it “Washington” since Washington State is so far away and insignificant to them. Those of us from Western states usually refer to the capital as “Washington D.C.,” or more commonly, just “D.C.” And then you have the people from Washington state that always say: “I’m from Washington State.” It’s honestly more common to hear people specify the state rather than the national capital.

depending on where you are from I guess. As a football fan I'm familiar with Denmark and any other countries commonly present in World Cups, but I have some struggles like when you put Slovakia/Slovenia/Serbia.

@@offsdexter2 i would understand you mistaking Slovakia with Slovenia, but Serbia? I don't think it has with those two anything in common (except for being Slavs) and even the flags aren't so difficult to recognize: 🇷🇸🇸🇰🇸🇮 Serbia has the colours on flag put opposite way and the symbol has eagles in it. Slovakia has a symbol with double cross. And Slovenia has a tiny symbol with mountains in it. And Slovakia is in central Europe surrounded by Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. Serbia is somewhere in Balkan and Slovenia is somewhere 'between' and a little more on west, but yeah, when I was supposed to learn African states (thankfully not flags) it was difficult

In my country (Germany) isn't even an subject where you ever learn flags of different countries... The closest thing to it is GL (Gesellschaftslehrer = society or sth) But even there u only learn the names and locations of a country (most likely nearby to Germany) and it capital

I would suggest to start and use the Albanian or Kosovian flag, let’s see if people recognize them. Also other flags of the Balkan countries like Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia etc
