It's basically like being in a relationship with the emotional investment and effort of a friendship. A lot of people are focused on the "benefits" part, but they aren't focused on the "friends" part. "Friends" is the string.

I mean, the friendship is the difference between a fuck buddy and a friend with benefits. I think of a friend with benefits as someone who's a friend first and who you're comfortable enough with to venture into other territories occasionally. I haven't officially had one, but my ex was essentially that. We were PhD students in adjacent departments working on the same time period, so we chatted daily about the primary and secondary literatures we'd read, about what our students did and our concerns about teaching and research. We offered each other emotional support when we struggled with our work and studies, and we read and edited each other's papers. However, we never lived together, we didn't make major decisions together, we didn't turn to each other for help if we had any problems with cars, apartments, finances, health, etc, and we would never even think to put each other's name as an emergency contact or to accompany each other to the hospital. He never thought to consider me when applying to jobs abroad, and I never thought to include him in activities when my parents visited. Most of our interactions were in public and we only ever went over to each other's place maybe once a week if even. We never bought or made things for each other except maybe a book or two. Looking back, it was essentially a friends with benefits situation. We were just too dumb and new at this to realize it.

I personally would not risk such friendship unless I was seeking romantic involvement, especially if I see that person very often. Whereas I think of a fuck buddy is someone we'd just hookup whenever we felt like it without having to concern one another with our lives.
