Because you don't really know how to do anything when you're out of uni. You have to learn your job by actively doing it. If you had the slightest aptitude for research you would have references for your argument, which is by the way, completely uncritical and entirely opinion based. Engineering majors study the most at an average of 19 hours a week(www.mymajors.com/blog/college-majors-study/). Which, this makes sense as Engineering majors statistically have higher IQs than most other majors, the lowest being 124 IQ, which is still considered intellectually superior(thetab.com/us/2017/04/10/which-major-has-highest-iq-64811).

@@kekw5153 Well, I work at a US university, so... Academics are very much underpaid, especially if you’re near the bottom of the academic ladder. An academic postdoc in the US makes less than a garbage collector and that’s the truth of it! I work 50-60 hours a week in the lab as a postdoc and get paid very little for the work I do. But saying that, I’m really in it for the Science and not for the money, and knowing that helps me get through the day .

Being an art student must be amazing. I just had to say a thing because the comment section is actually such a unimportant thing yet people pick up fights and start arguments and spread hate. Over, when you really think it through, mostly nonsense, but it really bothers me that people sometimes have to be afraid to even post a simple comment. It depends she’s obviously planning on grad school. If she goes to med school it’ll be much higher. Most people with a bio Chem major don’t enter the work force after undergrad so it’s a pretty impossible question to answer.

Think tanks, NGOs, journalism, or directly into politics are the ones that make the most sense and all of those are not hugely well paid. The more profitable option is probably to do public policy for a corporation, or go to law school.

@John doue Quebec Well, they aren't useless. It's a great pre-law major and a fair number of people badly want to work in politics even though it's very competitive and winner-take-all. It's just that entry level jobs are very low-paid. The people going into public sector jobs aren't the ones looking for stable, high salaries.

He's at an expensive private college in Boston. It costs $72,000 a year to go there between tuition and room and board. So, while he's probably off base with his starting salary he's not wrong that it's low compared to the people he knows and their families -- probably he considers all new-grad salaries low.

Whenever he asks what’s a common stereotype and they answer “it’s easy” I’m always like “ART/DESIGN/FILM MAJOR??” And then they have a book major and I’m like T.T because I’m a design/film major and everyone thinks all we do is just play all day and in class but in reality, I have never pulled so many all nighters till I switched majors to this one (I used to be psych/political science) major)

I've been in politics for over 6 years now and for a fact can tell you it doesn't matter where you go to school for polisci if you want to end up in politics-- what these political employers care most about is actual experience. I've seen folks from Harvard, UC Berkley, NYU etc getting same or similar starting pay in political field.

I'm a lobbyist for one of the biggest organizations in the country and have become one of the most respected experts in my field and Florida politics. Even then, my pay is not at 60k and thats with 4 years of work experience now. Pay really depends on employer but ask anyone in politics what their starting pay was out of college and you'll get similar responses even lower. As an entry-level legislative aide in congress you barely budge 30k.

This reminds me of what happens in my profession when we choose a residency field. It’s basically a personality test. The jocks choose ortho. The ones with crazy eye-hand coordination become surgeons. The nerds (yeah, I know, we’re all nerds, different scale here) go into internal med subspecialties like renal or neuro. The do-gooder idealists (like me) do family medicine. The people who can watch the Lion King 50 times without getting bored go into peds. The crazy people choose psych. And so on…
