They are a way to isolate temporary wireless devices whom still require internet access from your main network where all of your personal devices may be connected too. Yes, you can disable the main network SSID. This will hide the main and still show the guest.

2 years old, but I just came across another video that linked here. I like the idea putting cameras on a guest wifi, but is there a way to allow access to a local NVR yet provide security? I have several PoE cameras for outside monitoring as well as App controlled cameras. After installing, while a remote chance my concern is now my PoE outside cameras provide a link directly to my local network. If you have a video link that describes how to secure those let me know. For now may be setting up another router just for camera/NVR access with limited connection.

Question, so I have an ASUS router, and they have a dedicated tab for 'Guest Network' however in a separate tab called 'Wireless' I can also add multiple 2.4GHz networks. In this case, is it essentially doing the same thing? Or does the guest network have different properties such as the firewall you mentioned that would not be present in the 2.4Ghz netowork if I created another one via the 'Wireless' tab?

Hey, how you doing? I have a question I was trying to use guest network on my device for my little nephew, and it will not allow me too. It will keep giving me a message of capture, Apple. If the guest visits frequently will they automatically connect to the guest wifi.. if I want a once off connection would I need to reset the guest network setting ?

You'll have to go to your router's settings to change the guest wifi security. How you do this depends on your router. Most routers have an app you can download and manage its settings through the app. Most routers should still have a web interface you can login to and change settings that way.

@@HelpCloud I’m gonna swap from cable to fiber. I gonna leave the co-ax setup, so I gonna change it to simplify if I ever want to access at a later date. The modem router combo of Motorola works well for internet needs, but I might have my family end service with them, so I plan to allow an unlocked guest network identification with xfinity link, and a private one if xfinity wants to use a secured version.

Fyi. Does not hurt to change your router’s IP addr. Bad actors know that the first ip addr is typically the first ip addr in the subnet. Imo

My home network typically has more devices connected to 5ghz. Does guests on 5ghz affect main 5ghz? I have a triband router mostly 5ghz and 5ghz 2 are used up let's day I set guest network to 2.4 only will that help or do guest 5ghz not effect main

The hardware has to process any device regardless of which network they are on, if you have alot of devices and it seems to struggle, a more powerful router may be needed.

Gonna want a clean wipe if you do anything personal on it: hope you backup your data because you're gonna backup the malware too in all likelihood if you don't know what to look for.
