In this short film featuring artist Kevin Beasley, a Hugo Boss Prize 2020 nominee, discover the methodology of his multilayered practice in sculpture, installation, sound, and video. Beasley embeds found objects in substances such as resin, foam, and tar, or he incorporates unconventionally manipulated audio equipment. By amplifying the cultural resonances of his materials, his work excavates personal and shared histories of class, race, and institutional power. Journey to Cape Town to witness the gathering of these found objects and the creative process that goes into constructing unique stories from them.
“On one level I'm very deeply invested in the thing as it is,” says Beasley. “In some way or shape or fashion, it's come into my life and now I'm building a relationship to it. To then create actual images and create a narrative out of it, that decision is rooted in if I have a story to tell.” Learn more about the Hugo Boss Prize at www.guggenheim...
