Kevin Beasley: Hugo Boss Prize 2020 Nominee

In this short film featuring artist Kevin Beasley, a Hugo Boss Prize 2020 nominee, discover the methodology of his multilayered practice in sculpture, installation, sound, and video. Beasley embeds found objects in substances such as resin, foam, and tar, or he incorporates unconventionally manipulated audio equipment. By amplifying the cultural resonances of his materials, his work excavates personal and shared histories of class, race, and institutional power. Journey to Cape Town to witness the gathering of these found objects and the creative process that goes into constructing unique stories from them.
“On one level I'm very deeply invested in the thing as it is,” says Beasley. “In some way or shape or fashion, it's come into my life and now I'm building a relationship to it. So much of conceptual art leaves us with so little; we're left with - worse than inquiry - no interest at all. Whether or not this artist had made it to the point where he is recognised, identified and marketed by the art world (the Art World), his expansive visions and revisions are (thankfully) among us. They behoove us to not just pause, but stop. His sumptuous offerings engender rumination and wonder and an opportunity to stretch ourselves in a way that can be true. In a way that is here and now with our own lives in it.
